Welcome to a new chapter in our long-running series on this 2010 Cayenne. After buying a newer model for family duties, Todd debated selling this Cayenne until our audience recommended an off-road build. Wanting to start slowly, and with his mind on both cost and Jeep Wrangler memories, the result is this First Gen Cayenne with Jeep Rubicon ground clearance. Join us for Chapter 1 of the RubiCayenne story!

I love performance SUV's but we need to bring back a modern-day Pontiac Fiero - It could be manufactured under the GMC brand nameplate. The name Fiero (Italian for proud or fierce) is a great name, the badging - eloquent and exciting. Rear mid engine, rear wheel drive, low slung. maybe it's electric, maybe it's hybrid. It needs to be positioned somewhere between a Miata/GR86/BRZ and a Corvette. More power than a Miata, but at a price that is obtainable. The Solstice and Sky were close, but the Fiero's Italian styling was beautiful, especially the last year GT. Sports cars are so outrageously expensive now, most buyers can only afford them in the used market. We need to get out of this sea of of boring silver SUV's! -

congratulations on coming over to the dark side 😂 I have a 2015 Cayenne Diesel which has the Eurowise 2” lift, 32” BFG KO2’s, a spare tire carrier with the 5th BFG tire, full underbody skids from Eurowise as well as their rock rails. I’ve also added the winch plate as it ties to the frame and its used as recovery points (no winch or lights installed). I tell you this not to brag but as a warning because no mater what is added to the vehicle’s capabilities it still is seen as a less capable AWD and not a true 4x4 with lockers. The National Park Service is now enforcing and issuing fines on AWD vehicles using “their 4x4 only” trails. As a result of that policy the overlanding I was a member of kicked me out since the Cayenne is AWD. While I had no problems overlanding on the same trails as Jeep JK’s and Gladiators, the 4x4 purest don’t see it that way, even in clubs which travel mostly forest service type roads. As with any offroad vehicle knowing your vehicle’s limits and driving experience plays a big part in keeping out of offroad trouble. Unfortunately with new car manufacturers offering “soft offroader” causes the NFS not to deal with stupid motorists getting into trouble offroad and now issuing fines on some of their roads.
@tjf311
@tjf311 24 дня назад
Isn't the AWD vs. 4x4 exclusion based more on the impact of breaking an axle than on the vehicle's capability otherwise? In an AWD if you break any of the four drive axles you are stuck, whereas in a 4x4 you still will have 2 or 3 driven wheels to get you out.
@davidwalker72
@davidwalker72 24 дня назад
@@tjf311exactly, also the cayenne has a center locker (rear as well IIRC) so it's actually MORE capable off-road than a typical 4x4 pickup. I believe the NPS "AWD" exclusion policy doesn't apply to vehicles with a center differential and /or rear locker. Also, I believe if the vehicle has a low range transfer case it is OK.
@tjf311
@tjf311 24 дня назад
@@davidwalker72 Interesting, I'll have to look into that more. Thank you! Edit: from the NPS webpage: True 4x4 vehicles have a 'transfer case' in the drivetrain that puts full engine power to the front wheels. All Wheel Drive, common on vehicles like crossover SUVs, relies on a 'differential' to send variable power to each wheel. AWD is good on level roadbeds in low traction conditions like snow. It is not designed to fully power the front tires in off-pavement rugged situations. For example, if the road goes up a steep hill and there is a lot of loose rock in the road, fully powered front wheels are needed to rotate strongly and pull the vehicle up the slope. AWD cannot do that very well and may fail.
@davidwalker72
@davidwalker72 24 дня назад
@@tjf311 when they say "fully power" they can only mean 50:50 split. Therefore, AWD vehicles with a locking center differential should be fine.

If the Cayenne is constantly driving all four wheels and has a low-range, it is considered a "full-time four-wheel drive" system, not all-wheel drive. Other than that, awesome ride.

@tragicbanana2632

I believe that includes the vehicle as well since he stated the parts and labor were a about $6k, and the car is worth $7-8k
@EverydayDriver
@EverydayDriver 24 дня назад
It seems you’ve misunderstood the explanation. $13-14k is including the original value of the Cayenne in its current condition. As stated in the video, the Cayenne is worth $7-8k before doing anything. Then the cost of all parts and labor for the lift was about $6k, parts were only half of that. Sorry for any confusion. I think people need to lean more into the discomfort something like a TJ wrangler offers. I think the discomfort might even add to the experience. I bought my wife one, and drive it to work about once or twice every two weeks. Wranglers, with the small wheel base and versatile solid axles will 9 times out 10 perform better off road than a Cayenne, but I understand this build here. Minor not paved vehicle usage.

The VW with Porsche badging is kind of a joke , without the badges most people would think it was a Kia oe something . Paying for a name , no one would look at a 911 and think it was a Nissan Z , so that's not just paying for a name .
@elguyver

While it was a joint effort, Porsche was the one responsible for developing the joint platform for both Cayenne and Touareg. VW used their own engines (although they shared the VR6) and contributed with its knowledge mass production.

@1993Warbirds
@1993Warbirds 24 дня назад
Todd has always prefaced this by saying that it's not the build you're probably thinking. Heck there's usually air quotes around "build" in his case. This is the easy stuff that gets the car over that initial hump. And if that's good for Todd, then so be it. There's no need to tear the thing apart and do crazy stuff.

Perhaps it's just me, but I never understood when people say that Jeeps are hard to drive or have bad road manners. My '14 JKU 6m is plenty comfortable and easy to drive on road, and I do quite a bit of road trips on the freeway.
@phattyhales
@phattyhales 23 дня назад
@ajtholt I grew up around Jeeps. My parents have had lifted Jeeps most of my life. My dad has rebuilt two 4.0s. We would go on road trips in them. Two kids and as many as three dogs piled into a CJ7 or XJ on the trails or in the interstate. The XJs have all been comfortable. We went from Tucson to Toronto and back to Tucson in one. In a vacuum they are perfectly fine. But compared to just about anything else like them they do have poor road manors.
