My thoughts and prayers are with anyone who is affected directly by this fire. Down here in the midwestern Lower 48, we are feeling the side affects of the smoke. It was quite hazy this morning and there was a thick smell of smoke in the air. Definitely a scary situation, everybody up there stay safe!
+Mark Henley It would help the people who are effected by the fire, but actually putting the fire out takes resources that need to be already in place.
I remember this, I was only seven but I lived very close to fort McMurtry (50 minutes away) and I remember all the smoke, I had asthma so it was really bad and I remember having so many fundraisers
Thanks so much Brother. Thanks so much for your recognition. And, no, these people don't some how 'deserve' this. But, I know you know that. It is a real bloody disaster.
Yes it will take years for people to get back to any kind of normal. My aunt went to church one sunday few years ago, workmen where doing work on her house and a fire broke out, my aunt lost her home, and even to this day things where never the same. How are things in Fort McMurray now?
We Californians are all thinking of you and praying for you. I have shared the Redcross.ca link on my facebook and ask my friends and family to donate.
I wish the best to those all in this situation. I hope everyone gets out of the fire fast and safely. Were starting a donation at school in ottawa to help all those in needs. Best of luck ❤were all with you Fort mcmuray. from newfoundland and Labrador all the way to vancouver bc.
I was there, I remember my mom said drop everything and get in the car! It was a 25 hour drive to Edmonton because of traffic, my dad was working near the fire area, he was in town while me my mom and siblings left, we stayed at a friends house for 2 days, then my dad finally came. We rented a car and then drove to Calgary which took 3 hours from Edmonton, we stayed at this university home because nobody was studying there during the summer. our room was right next to my friend from fortmcmurray! We have been friends for over 5 years and we were very happy to be together! So when we were there, we just kinda hanged out there for 2 months, and then when we went back to fortmac, all there was was water and fire damage, the town wasn’t packed because there were over 20K who never came back. We moved to a new house lived there for 2 years, then we moved out of fortmcmurray and moved to Toronto, we drove for about 46 hours. And so did my best friend from that university! How convenient. So my parents never wannna talk about fortmcmurray ever again because it sucked. I lived there for 7 years, there were a lot of fun memeories there. But we moved on. I can’t believe this happened over 2.5 years ago... I hope you guys understand! This tough! The fire was the toughest thing I have experienced!
I was only 10 at the time and I'm so thankful for my parents. they even tried to make a game out of it so that me and my 3 siblings didn't panic. It made the whole 2 months out my home a lot smoother and happier. I'm sure my parents were worried sick since we hadn't had any news on our house. wether it was still standing
I would have lit every square foot of the forest in the background on fire. Its easier to fight the fire on the other side of the highway with a new fire than a fully engulfed one. I would have removed all shrubbery and every tree from my home along with wooden fences. Another thing is asphalt shingles, I would ban them in such areas and ill bet the majority of the homes that didn't burn had steel rooves
:-( I knew this was coming after hearing how dry the snow peeks were last year. Weather has shifted on this planet, we are seeing these effects now all over the world and it really began after the Japanese Fukushima reactor event. California, Oregon, Washington , Alaska and Canada are all in major drought. I've noticed the difference, our forest here in Oregon have many dead fur trees the rainy season is a joke and the biggest problem is morning frost. We never see morning frost anymore in the winter months it's a rare occasion.
I bawled with the interview of Brian Bowdridge :'( I'm so very sorry for the people of Ft Mac that are dealing with this :( I can't even begin to imagine what you're all feeling inside. I pray that the weather starts cooperating and that you guys get to go back and start rebuilding. :(
+Andrea Johnson Thank you Andrea from CA. I am not in Fort Mac but I am south in the city of Edmonton. I know many people who work at the oil plants in the Fort so it is very alarming. Their city has been in rough times for quite a while now because of devastating low oil prices and the lack of enough pipelines to get the product to market. The veto of Keystone was a blow.
+Lois O.W. Why dont Canada pipe whatever the keystone would have? To my knowledge, canadiens can build pipeline. Why put your attitude on us. Work on a solution to your own issues and we will do the same
+Lois O.W. we have had years of extraordinary draught then hit with horrendous fast firestorms last fall in several nearby communities at the same time was just like what I'm seeing now in Alberta. The fires were faster and hotter than what we had seen before. I pray no lives are lost. Things are replaceable, but people's lives can't, they are precious.
+KiyiyaHowlingWolf and what makes you say this do you think this is suspicious or jnot? there are documents showing that that property is full of Uranium. have you kept up on the Bundy ranch do you know what that is all about. if jnot educate yourself on it. you just might learn something.whether fracking or Uranium there is a negative Agenda here.you know some people just cant handle the Truth.
If you go to 2:45 in the video the newslady explains that the government has set up a camp for ten thousand people in the north and did you not pay attention to the interviews of the refugees? Go to 7:40 the woman interviewed is explaining how well the people at the refugee center/services are treating her and her family who lost their home.
"...it's not as frustrating or scary to learn that you're trapped." I've felt that frustration ever since your NDP government accidentally won the last election, Notley.
+Crystal Lee Ignorant?! This government has been an abject disaster for Alberta, and they've only been in office for a year! You're the one that needs to get informed.
I don't understand how they can attribute a vehicle accident on Hwy 881 100+ km away to the fire. Sure they were evacuating but with the frequency of accidents on 63 and 881 it really isn't suprising that an accident happened. Its still tragic nonetheless.
When I was in Fort Mc Murray I was at the school Good Shepherd and we needed to get out but the buses were late and we needed to go in teachers cars and my sister was the last one and we were picked up at Father Turcotte and we went home and trees were on fire me and my sister were crying and my moms friend came over saying THE HILL IS ON FIRE and she was helping us getting our clothes in the suitcase but we were to late we needed to go up the river and we went on a hill and met some people on the hill and people that were in there car in the forest we could not know what there saying but I think what they said I'm pragnet but then some on the hill went in there boat and went on the other side and we needed to stay at cabins then there was a storm. A lighting built was in the other side that we were going we had to go thro the fire it was windy so a helicopter couldn't land so the put a note and tide it to a water bottle and it said fire 50 miles away so we went up the river and stayed at a camp site we met another guy there he worked there with his family and he let us sleep In a cabin
I was in grade 1 when this happened and I was in fort mc murry I remember the principal told me my parents were here to pick me up I had no idea what was going on when I walked outside the sky was orange and my mom was running me to my car and my brother I thought this was the end for me but I am okay and my house is good
sorry I didn't see this sooner , no on map a friend had posted in a chat room for us an it wouldn't copy and paste . This where I think it came from wildfire.alberta.ca/wildfire-status/wildfire-status-map.aspx but couldn't get to a place that allowed it to move in kind of real time .
+Lucy's Mom  ya I heard it on the media today bout 5 countries very far away offered to help....Canada declined, u.s. is too busy with they're own disasters right now, but did offer
+Lucy's Mom The Russian rescuers have a vast experience in the eradication of these fires, as well as specially developed techniques and equipment ! It is very important in these conditions(huge disaster take place!!!). And such help is always needed
There have been many major wildfires in Alberta and bordering BC through the centuries. Nothing new. It's an arid semi-desert region. What many experienced firefighters have tried to do over the years is convince towns like Fort McMurray to fireproof. Few, like FM, have taken heed. A wildfire ignites, wind spreads it, and blows into towns like FM that have made no fire protection efforts, Town is completely defenceless to the inferno, terrifying ordeal to evacuate, and all of it preventable. Forest firefighting crews cannot extinguish these fires. They're too big; humans too few, small and slow. The importance is on preventive efforts before the fact. Creating fireproof town perimeters before an inferno ignites. These towns ignore the advice and sooner or later nature comes knocking. Nearly every city in North America, before the advent of fire resistant building materials, caught fire and burned down in whole or part. Whole cities built of wood, one structure caught fire, moved to the next house or building, soon the whole place, or most of, was in flames. The structures were replaced with stone, brick or concrete, all potential fire fuel removed. Towns like FM, largely a kindling box, reside in a gigantic natural kindling box. They were advised about this very situation and did nothing. The cost and time to fireproof is way cheaper than demo and rebuild. Take away a forest fire's fuel and you starve the fire. It's that simple. Maybe other towns will learn from FM and take the time to avoid the same dilemma. I have strong doubts they won't.
When you going thru and you don't know what to do.. When life gets too heavy don't back down.. Hold your head up high Be a good cheer All you need to know your deliverance is near...Count it all joy Jesus Loves You so do I Your Friend indeed ((Faith)) Pray.. Link.. Love
I am 7 hours away from Fort mcmurray and I saw the smoke passing, and the craziest thing is my Aunty and uncle just moved from fort mcmurruy before the fire happened.
+Robb Peterson To Neil, God may be part in his life. And there is a saying. There is God within all of us. So put 2 and 2 together. If you still don't understand you are hopeless.
I thought it was cause by a cigerate (idk how to spell) the thing where people use to smoke and there were still some still in there and they threw it in the forest
I remember that my dad he was fighting the fire here as a firefighter and I just remember driving out of town thinking about my dad,my friends and my house and the downtown almost burned as well I probably wouldn't be living here anymore if it weren't for everyone who help me and everyone around me.but I just prayed for the people who lost their home
If anyone herd or was their but their was a fire in slave lake in 2011 we had evacuated but slave lake is not as big as fort mac we lost aka quarter of our town
