A large search and rescue mission is underway in the North Atlantic for a submersible carrying five passengers to the site of the Titanic shipwreck, after it went missing Sunday. CBS' David Pogue profiled the company that owns and operates the sub for "CBS Sunday Mornings" in 2022. He joins "CBS Mornings" to discuss his experience on the sub.

Exactly this, I have watched about 10 different ones and while majority do say it could have imploded this was the only man to be honest and say look rescue is practically impossible even if theyre alive which is what was on my mind to begin with.

I am a researcher involved in making sonar / communications instruments for these types of vehicles. I vividly remember my lab looking at the Titan and thinking it was a disaster waiting to happen...they didn't adhere to the established safety standards seen on other such submersibles such as WHOI's alvin

It sounds like that even if they are alive there’s no plan in place to actually retrieve them since there aren’t many subs that are prepared to go that deep for a rescue. That’s absolutely crazy. Why would someone have something like this with no resources for a possible rescue?

You aren't getting rescued from 13k feet under the water. It isn't happening. No military sub can even get close to that deep. What are you going to use? The vehicles that go that deep have little tiny maneuvering propellers.

He explained all this very well: basically, they're searching for the sub on the surface only because if the occupants are still alive on the ocean floor near the Titanic, they will certainly die there, in which case future dives to the Titanic will be seeing a second, smaller wreck cotaining five skeletons at the site.

@@khalidelgazzar Yeah, although it's crazy to hear David Pogue basically spell out the Titan's fate long before it was made official. All that hope was completely fake in the first place. I imagine it must have been a difficult decision for the Coast Guard to even move out when they already knew perfectly well (via the US Navy) that the submersible had imploded. I would have wanted to see that press conference, with some rear admiral basically going all Michael Falk on the assembled audience (referring to the Onion News "obviously dead hikers" video) :D

Well after hearing that I think the kindest thing would be it imploded for all of them, being stuck at that depth unable to be rescued and eventually running out of air isn't a good way to go. Thoughts with the families

Actually being alive at the bottom would be a blessing. This would give them enough time to pray to God, confess their sins and repent. So they square things up with him before they get to meet him. If they die before purifying their souls then it's not so good a thing. We all will face our mortality. The desire should not be on how we die. But more on how we leave to be received by him.

If I get in an elevator too quickly I have a panic attack. I can’t even begin to imagine the heart stopping claustrophobia I would feel when they closed the hatch and started bolting it closed. I would rather jump out of a plane with no parachute than spend even 5 seconds at the bottom of the sea floor in a dark cold coffin with 4 other people waiting to asphyxiate. Let’s hope for all their sake that it imploded at depth and they all died in a nanosecond

They wouldn't have felt it because it was instantaneous. The human body could not survive those depths. Their bodies woulda been crushed from the pressure. In the same way that if you were in space without protective equipment, the lack of pressure would do the oppossite and instantly pop your blood vessels. That makes recovering the bodies out of the question. Their bodies woulda been mangled at that depth.

As someone who worked in insurance for years, I can confidently tell you that no insurer would EVER touch this with a 39.5 foot pole. Not even a specialty insurer like Lloyd's. You couldn't even price the risk.

The wealthy individuals who can afford to spend $250k on a journey have willingly put themselves in that position, fully aware of the risks involved. It's comparable to paragliding where, if you happen to fall, you understand that as a human being, you're meant to be on the ground and not in the air like a bird.

This is a very sad and scary situation. The crew of the Titan and their families are in my thoughts. It's worrying that the submarine hasn't come back up yet, even though it has many ways to do so. The idea that the submarine might be stuck at the bottom of the sea or that it might have broken apart is really scary. They only have four days of air, and two days have already passed. Finding and saving the crew will be hard. The submarine is very deep and not many machines can go that far down. Also, the submarine can't be opened from the inside which makes things harder. We hope for the best, but this shows how risky deep-sea exploration can be. It reminds us how powerful the ocean is and how brave the people are who explore it. Prayers🙏

Why anyone would climb inside -- let alone be bolted into -- this claustrophobic-inducing box is beyond me. What happens if you develop leg cramps, have a medical event, get nauseaus, have a panic attack, etc.? There is nothing anyone can do to help you until several hours later at the earliest. The BBC's documentary, all 43 minutes of going submersible with this actual one. They had problems with the controller and instead of forwards/backwards it was going round in circles. This looks like a disaster that was waiting to happen.

Maybe the end caps press inwards..but laminated carbon fibre is not designed for compression, only tension.

People really act like this is standard procedure and common practice driving 12,000 ft into the ocean. Why didn’t they just send another team down to grab the vessel? Because there is only ONE vessel in existence and even if there were two this thing weighs 10 tons and cannot be brought back up

Because it is 😂😂 they have made this trip regularly to the titanic for the last 40 years. They have made thousands of similar journeys not to titanic but at other places. Every time they have all come back up safe and sound. This is a one of freak incident There isn’t only one. The UK has five subs which are more than capable. The problem is they are not on sight. And america being america of course we are holding everything up instead of allowing the people who are skilled in this stuff to take charge

You would think that they would have a cable hooked to the ship to the submersible, just in case something like this happens? I’m thinking it cracked under the tremendous pressure, and it exploded and crushed.

that's actually very unlikely, we really have pressure vessels down at this point, and, as sketchy as the Titan is, it's a good pressure vessel. There's a chance that some part of it flooded, though even then, that would likely just damage the electronics. If they weren't able to float to the surface, then the most likely scenarios is actually just them stuck at the bottom of the ocean, or drifting thousands of feet underwater, waiting to die.

@@hunterra217 at that depth if a gasket in the hatch failed, even just a tiny hole, the interior would fill up with water so fast that releasing all of the ballast would not allow it to float back up to the surface. as the water enters it compresses the air inside the sub to the point where the high pressure crushes the crew to death before they can drown.

An expert who made the journey in the same submersible claimed it takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach the bottom. So something must have happened before they reached the bottom? If it was the power that went out, they would have immediately used their manual method of reaching the surface? If they have they must be bobbing in the waves and they have no way of opening the hatch? And that’s the best scenario!

@@joemasse4568 I'd agree except previous riders and some staff have confirmed that losing contact at those depths is basically normal for this craft, that's why it took many hours before anything was reported. Really anything could have happened, you're right that that's the best case scenario, though that would be a horrible way to go, slowly suffocating to death like that.

How did the support vessel lose it on sonar as it was going down? Any hydrophone should have picked up the implosion. That’s what support vessels are for- support. Instead, it was like- “We’ll see you when you get back… Hopefully.” Anything could have happened. It just baffles me- It’s like diving headfirst into a muddy lake. It’s entirely speculative at this point because there are so many things that could have gone wrong. It seems that many in the deep water community knew that something like this was eventually going to happen but there wasn’t much that they could do about it. That is to say, they did not think that tourism on non-certifiable submersibles was a good idea but they couldn’t do anything to stop it.
