WOW. A huge congratulations. I too suffer from contamination OCD and I cannot afford ERP therapy. This task would have been as difficult for me as it was for Katie. I would have to do ERP just to stop from washing my clothing because I sat on a "public" couch.
@jagboy69
@jagboy69 Год назад
Oh yeah, I live with someone like you! Seriously, there is hope, but I gotta say, it can take a second person to help. I was able to distract my wife long enough not to change her clothes and she one day realized she had been in the same clothes for 2 days and SUCCESS! Just do not avoid ever sitting on a public couch or chair. If you are still dealing with this, go to your dentist and hang around in their waiting room. Switch seats and touch EVERYTHING you can! Then go visit a close friends house and sit in their furniture. Tell them what you are doing. I promise you will put on your best face for your friend. When you go home, do not change for one day! The anxiety will come down on it's own and you'll get used to that feeling and you will crave that peace you have found. You can do this! Now if you have a way to stay outta the sink, please let me know!

CBT is definitely something to look into. It sounds like you have some form of OCD. I have a severe phobia and people never take it seriously so I just want to tell you that no matter how much I don’t understand your fear, it is no less real for you. Your experiences are valid and should be treated not as a joke but as a serious fear that you have that needs treatment. God bless ❤️ hope you get through this (or have gotten through it since this comment is from a year ago)

I have also contamination OCD but not with Germs or afraid of bringing diseases home. My contamination OCD is that I have a big problem with dirt , grease , filth and I'm afraid that I accidently bring it home. So i'm cleaning always. I don't allow visitors in my house. Another example is cooking , it's for me a really hard task because i'm afraid of splashing cooking oil or anything that I could accidently spread trough my house and that it will go on my clothes , ground , kitchen.. and that i don't have control over were every bit fell. Another example i'm afraid stepping on oil or grease without seeing it and than spread it al over my house floor. The worst scenario is my bedsheets or bed. If my wife comes back from work she need to atleast wipe her hair with a damp towel with a little soap or wash her hair. Because i'm afraid that she accidently touched her hair with her hands while working or eating and than i'm afraid that it will spread in my bed , sheets , pillows... Smartphones are getting wiped with wet wipes before they can use it again after shower.. This is really killing me. I can't enjoy life anymore. Going drinking or eating somewere i'm really uncomfortable to sit down or lean against something because I could bring it on my car seat and the next time I sit on my car seat with my clean clothes I could bring it in my house. It's in sane. Is this also a type of OCD? So i'm not afraid to bring diseases or germs inside it's more like Physical contamination like , sand , mud , outside dust , grease , oils filth in general...

@LJ310_ Год назад
Yes this is OCD, you are experiencing Obsessive thoughts about oils and fiflths and you take Compulsive actions/rituals to prevent them. It is a never ending cycle. OCD can be for many things, some people have OCD for thinking they did not lock their home doors or leave the stove on when they leave their home, and will make up to 20 trips to be sure. Another example is OCD regarding turning left because the person think something bad is gonna happen. The mind creates those negative distorted fact and has the victim see it as a threat. The underlying issue is acceptance of the uncertainty, we never know the outcome, we imagine the worst case scenario, and we take actions thinking it will make us safe. I am also dealing with OCD, best of luck, I hope you can find help.

Duude i literally have the same issue as u. Im not scared of germs but rather minute particles and oily/ greasy stuff such as food and i worry that the oil will be transferred from one place to another in a never ending cycle until the whole world becomes contaminated (not with germs, but with those physical particles). Same for sticky things such as glue, sticky food items etc. Can u pls get into contact with me because we literally share the same issue meaning that i can relate 100% to your problems while other ppl with OCD usually have harm ocd or pure o, religions ocd etc. Its very hard to find someone to relate to. So that's why i want to get in contact with you. Reply to this comment and i will send u my email. Thanks

@@riyaansheikh7470 Does any of this surprise ANY OF US? For the last 2 years it's been wash your hands 24/7 and it has destroyed countless lives with THEIR LIES AND BS! My wife is dealing with this same crap right now and I get to pick up the pieces! Folks, it's time, take back your lives, do no believe the lies they sold us! The experts have been wrong at every turn. The vax didn't keep people from getting sick, social distancing and masks didn't work, staying at home wasn't the answer and destroying our economy only made things worse! ERP works, do not get mad at your significant others, the only way to beat this mess is stay close and hang onto each other tight! You must face the "fears" to fight them and you are stronger as a team. I don't care what form your OCD has taken... Hand washing, checking, rituals, compulsions, fear of harm to self or others, not a good person.... ALL OF IT IS TREATED THE SAME WAY! Being doped out on SSRI's aren't always the answer either, but you might have to find something chemically to bring down the anxiety allowing you to do the exposures. I'm not an herbal guy by any means, but anshwganda root has helped keep my wife down while we perform ERP exercises and deal with the day to day issues as they come up. It's a tough road, but we are making progress. Best tip I have now is what Nate says. Anxiety and fear are two different things, don't confuse them. Anxiety is I'm afraid to go outside because there MIGHT be a bear out there and Fear is looking at a bear and running away. One is imagined and the other is a very real experience. No one ever got hurt facing an anxiety no matter how real it feels. Best wishes, you can do this. I gotta go rescue someone from the sink. :-/

But, the more I try to do what she does, the more anxiety I have. It could go on for hours!!! Then, it just doesnt leave. It continues the next day!!

Maybe you're ruminating a lot when you're doing the exposure. Rumination is one of the things that keeps the anxiety at a high level, instead of allowing anxiety to decrease slowly and naturally after it reaches it's peak. If you're thinking about worse case scenarios in your head, the anxiety response gets "retriggered" so to speak. There's a therapist that speaks a lot about this. In case what I said resonates with you, I reccommend checking him out. His name is Michael J. Greenberg. I hope you feel better soon :)
@TheRiboka
@TheRiboka Год назад
Maybe the task is too overwhelming. You usually have a hierarchy of exposure tasks with graded levels of difficulty. This is just a demo, not how the therapy is conducted in practice. You'd start from a very easy task, do it until it causes no anxiety then move to the next.

T W: mentions of specific intrusive thoughts involving dy*ng Bro I felt so much anxiety thinking about what my own therapy would probably look like and bruh, we got to around ten at the same time. I haven't finished the video yet, but I had to stop it lol. I haven't been diagnosed, but I'm pretty sure I have like, doubter ocd, like, I am terrified of one, not being a good person, and two, not being liked by someone (because that means I was unpleasant in their perception and they don't want me there which means I'm bad and should die (yes I know how irrational that is, I also struggle with asking people to hang out or drive me places because almost every time I get constant images of them/us cr*shing and them/us dy*ng and it being because I asked them to drive me somewhere that specific time in my life, which is very irrational, so *shrugs*)) so like, I just imagine like, a family therapy session where my family and friends have to like, tell me about the things I've done wrong or like, why I suck and am a bad person sometimes, and I just don't get to say ANYTHING. EVER. I don't get to defend myself about it, I don't get to explain why I did it or profusely apologize and seek reassurance about it. (Edit: I watched the second part and I like this outcome)

@nagipoch
@nagipoch 3 года назад
It will readjust your obsession thought and decrease the sympathetic nerve system, through the extinction part of conditioning theory. In the beginning, since she touched the bin, the automatic, intrusive, obsession thought came up. But when the time goes by her body, her nerve system, her thought was reframed and learning a new idea, less intrusive, less dangerous.

But it'll not work for someone with health anxiety, can't expose themselves to actual diseases and get comfortable, I don't understand how a person with fear of a certain diseases when logic also supports it - like I take finasteride for Alopecia and I read that it can cause PFS which is incurable - so my ocd kicked in and so did anxiety, how can I use ERP in this case? As I won't be exposing myself to the actual PFS and get comfortable with it. The more I read about it the more paranoid and anxious I get thinking I've already taken the dose, I can't undo it and logically it can happen. So its not a fear of something that is logically impossible; which makes it more real and threat.

How is this different than flooding?? Or is this basically the same thing? Thank you!
@qualiacbt
@qualiacbt Год назад
Great question! In my mind flooding is something that happens unexpectedly, the person feels surprised and overwhelmed by the experience and the flooding experience is usually a negative experience. I often associate the word "flooding" with trauma - when a trauma reminder causes a person to be flooded with overwhelming emotions. The key difference is that exposure is planned and the client feels IN CONTROL (very important.). The steps of the exposure are mapped out, organized and sequential and the client comes to them willingly. In exposure the emotions can become very intense, however the client is taught to stick with them and to learn from them even when they are intense. Ideally, exposure if taught to the client in a therapeutic setting and also experienced first in therapy. from there the client is encouraged to practice on their own. I hope this helps! Thom

@@qualiacbt Thom, thank you very much for putting that in plain english. Since reading your response months ago, we have been able to put this in action in our own home. The throttling of the persons anxiety and watching them respond as habituation takes place is really remarkable! No doubt in my mind ERP works very well. Now getting a person *willing* to stay in the exposure on their own until the anxiety comes down naturally is the trick. I'm ready to shut the water off at my house to keep my wife out of the sink. Too harsh??? lol Poor woman has been quietly checking for years so I knew there was tendencies, but thanks to 24/7 wash your hands for the last 2 years really spiraled her into a living hell for both of us. 😞 Keep up the great work, no one should be scared to throw the trash.

How long should a typical ERP session be? And how many days/weeks/ months does it take to recover if your consistent everyday?
@Wra8h
@Wra8h 3 года назад
I recommend following Kimberley Quinlen on Instagram. Helpful info.
@qualiacbt
@qualiacbt 3 года назад
Hi Daniel, Typical sessions for ERP are 90 minutes. Usually the recommendation is to practice the exposure repeatedly for a week as many times as possible, and ongoing, until fear is considerably decreased. Then maintain exposures when possible to prevent relapse. Depending on the fear, you may have 5-10 steps gradually facing elements of the fear until you’ve overcome your worst fear. If this is done typically in several weeks you would be fully recovered. For some things like phobias, you could repeatedly do ERP for each step in one day then just complete exposures to maintain results.
@danielwall1277
