It's called technically legal They have to use cameras But it doesn't say with what quality, so they use the cheapest they can find, even used ones that had been thrown out
@@JesseO-nh3us That is less true when you are legally required to keep thousands of hours of a couple trees blowing in the wind captured through a device that could barely power a battery let alone a decent compression algorithm.
Government: you have nothing to fear citizen if you follow the law. Theres nothing to hide Also government: please dont release those incriminating documents about all the bad stuff we did
@@renzorevilla1210 There is a novel called 1984 by George Orwell in which big brother is a recurring theme of the authoritarian government spying on the people.
Aldous Huxley's distopia brave new world is a much better representation of the authoritative direction western society is going in I believe opression of the masses through meaningless and endless indulgence. Also inspired a cool Dr who episode.
dont worry , with how much damage is being dealt to americas economy and military bcuz democrats want to lock everyone down , and with world war 3 much closer , there will be no cctv cameras , why? WORLD WAR 3 BETWEEN THE ALLIED POWERS AND CHYNA
There's no one I hate more than the nutjobs who think vaccines are a plot to put tracking chips in us. We gladly carry our tracking chips in our pockets already, and they double as mics/cameras for the NSA. "They" don't need tracking chips.
@@subtleusername5475 two different things. You have a tyrannical government chasing you, you can ditch that phone. You can't ditch a chip very easy. Bad argument.
@@ryhanzfx1641 The reason the comment is being regarded as a joke is not because the concepts in it have no connection, but because the wording is so broken that it doesn't make any coherent connection between them. For example, what are they trying to say Trump was turning into? O'Brien - the torturer character who most represents the system? Winston - the character most likely to be a self-insert? George Orwell - the author giving commentary on the system who is actually against it? Or just a general fan of the system in 1984? Or one of the builders of it in real life? By using words more carefully, we can keep some nuance about these concepts, and make sure things are only called 1984 when it makes sense to. If we get sloppy about it, we lose the ability to point out totalitarianism.
@@Deschutron holy shit, you turn such a simple sentence into literal essay. Nobody got time for that, may i remind you to go OUTSIDE sometimes, the thing about folks like you is you spent too much time on the web, so please go OUTSIDE sometimes, those nuance essay has no effect in real life
"Donald trump has become George Orwell, in 1984" - She does realise that George Orwell is the Author and not the protagonist right? Winston's name is on the first page of the book.

There is an odd conflict with your channel. On the one hand, you moved away from ordinary things like your original videos, but on the other hand the channel did take a shift that is more artistic as it covers things that are "ordinary" in the sense that those are things we live with on a day by day basis. In a sense, mass surveillance is indeed an ordinary thing (in the 21st century) but its not an intuitively ordinary thing. I personally was happy with the form the channels started as but it is still an interesting twist on that original concept so I guess I will see where this is all going.
I have a bit of fun wrestling with that conflict. I like to find the strange in the ordinary and I think that can take me on some flights of fancy. But there will be some extremely ordinary content going forward as well as the more political stuff. Was thinking about doing Pretzels, for example
@@OrdinaryThings one of the most informative channels on youtube mate. Keep it up. Would be cool if you included source notes in your videos so we can check some of these informations for ourselves and link it up in future references possibly. Thank you for your work, love it when people don't bullshit around and cut straight to it
Thanks for watching this very special episode of Ordinary Things. All shares, likes and comments are extremely appreciated. I'd also like to share my massive thanks to everyone who has already donated to my Patreon. That's awesome and really helps me make more of these videos: patreon.com/ordinarythings
This quote from Neil Postman is relevant, as at the end of your video you cover the main issues Huxley's Brave New World contended with: What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egotism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that our fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that our desire will ruin us.
I'm just going to say it. Even if everyone else already is. This is a gem of an episode. I've been a fan for ages, and your videos are some of the only that hold any rewatch value for me. And EVERY time I come back to this one it just gets me. There are some really amazing jokes in here. So well written, researched, produced, acted... everything. I feel bad condemning anyone to a lifetime of making video on this platform, and not to be overdramatic, but I don't know what I would do if you didn't make videos anymore.
When I worked at a company that made information displays, one of my collegues refused to use smartphones for this reason. He always carried an old Nokia, it had no internet access at all, no camera and no GPS. He knew it could still be tracked, but said he at least kept it to a minimum. But with GSM networks disappearing and electronic ID being more and more mandatory, this isn't a solution that will last.
Haha! That security cam footage at tHe end was hilarious! So glad it exists, and that Ordinary Things fully supports thEir use in a non threatening way whatsoever! AbsoluteLy love you're work, and the work of all those peoPle who are out to keep everyone safe and secure in their own homes!
How to get free surveillance for home protection: Hang a terrorist flag outside your house, your country's security services will be monitoring your house 24/7.
“…it’s pretty hard to argue your innocence for a crime, when a camera saw you do it. Unless your wearing an American police badge.” That’s hilarious, but also uncomfortably real.
That Clockwork Orange reference at the end was perfect. I've watched a few of your videos and you've very quickly become one of my favorite channels I've subscribed to. You are freaking hilarious, dude!!!
@@metanumia Pretty much every other news network has repeated outright lies, like Trump's tax cuts mainly benefiting the rich (in reality 75% of Americans benefited), or omitted thinks like the peace deals Trump cut in several MENA countries or the fact that he's the first president since Jimmy Carter to avoid starting or expanding a conflict. Fox is still a bad network, as all the legacy media outlets are, but to say they're somehow more propagandist than the others is just a result of you believing a bunch of propaganda already.
I really like the way you make videos, professionally done but you still throw in some edgy humor as well. The topics covered are well researched and explained even better. Keep it up, hope you channel grows to a 1m sooner than you think it will.
This channel is pure genius. The videos are timeless in terms of topic, criticism and even humor (this is extremely hard to achieve). I'm mad it took me so long to know this guy. Not the algorithm video, but thanks, RU-vid algorithm. Better late than never.
I think this is the best video yet! I enjoy the dark turn things have been taking. The audio did get a bit uncomfortably loud at the end when you had your montage. Thanks! 😻
I was watching a documentary on the decline of rock and heavy metal. You had people like Lars Ulrich saying shit like “the kids just aren’t as rebellious anymore.” Well there’s a reason for that, CCTV is everywhere and if someone does anything rebellious today within 2 seconds everyone’s got a phone out and is recording them. Therefore anything naughty you do you get caught for.
I love this video. This is by far the best written episode for me. It's hilarious too. I appreciate the effort you put into your work and I especially appreciate how much they make me think, even if I look like this after doing it: 14:30
This channel is both amazing food for thought and an amazing source of endless anxiety that will hunt me for the next 13 hours before the algorithm shows me something funny to make me forget this
Another great video, second favorite to the USSR Collapsing on Soviet TV, which also introduced me to the wonderful work of Harry Egipt, thanks, keep up the awesome work!
I was listening to this while walking back from doing some shopping with a bag in each hand so I really appreciated the gag at the end especially without having a free hand to adjust my volume.
You should have a look at the removal of security cameras in Berlin. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, and the not so nice experience they had with the secret police, they had a policy of not tracking their citizens. So it might be possible to cut back on mass surveillance if you have a bad enough past of it
how was this channel not famous until very recently. This stuff is top notch, couldn't make it much better for what your doing with it. Im going to be watching you along side Internet Historian and Internet Comment Etiquette.
Hey king. I wouldn't have found you without your Internet Historian appearances, but I'm really glad I did. Your content is completely self worthy, and I deeply enjoy it.
Thanks dude! Aw, I'm really glad. I'm hoping to bring more and more film references/parodies in as I go along, so I feel the Film Qualia spirit lives on
Btw.: 1984 was published, not written in 1949. It was withheld during the war, and the original title was 1948. But it was a hot potato and thus was published after the war and with this new, more distant title. You see, Orwell thought of his vision as to be unfolding in his present. Also check out Anthony Burgess "1985", a critical essay and alternative novel more aptly depicting 1980' ahead.
@aadhi gei some generic lib ragging on Russia and China as some boogeyman is literally nothing new nor special. Also, it’s always rich hearing a Brit complain about another country being a surveillance state.
@@JohnSmith-nh2te You do realize he talked extensively about British surveillance, right? He covered lots of different countries and situations and complained about all of them.
@@SpiceIntolerance I’m a communist; this video is part of what I’d called McCarthyism 2.0. I just think it’s funny for a “sophisticated” western man to be complaining about surveillance in the East. It’s classic Red Scare behavior hidden behind a “fair analysis”.
