In the "Good Old Days," they were called a "Road Draft Tubes" and we're usually found on the passenger side of motors. This allowed oil vapors to vent straight to the atmosphere and the oil droplets to coat the underneath of your car, preventing rust. This was replaced by the pcv to direct the vapors into the air intake system, same as the ccv. That being said, it is part of your smog control system and if your state has emissions testing with a visual inspection, they might catch the modification. Depending on the inspector, it could be a just fix it, to a ticket.

I appreciate the kind words. Totally agree with everything you said about the CCV. By routing the tube over the master cylinder I doubt you will have any issues with oil drops from your tubing. I have yet to get a single drop out of mine in the last year or so. One thing to be extra careful with when routing it farther back as you did is to make sure you do not have any low points or dips in the tubing. You want it to have a downward slope all the way back. This is important because if you have any low points, that is a place where water or oil vapors can condense/accumulate and actually cause some restriction by filling up some of the line. As far as smell goes, I definitely have a very distinctive smell that comes out of mine. Especially when the engine/oil is warm. No harm in it but can be a little annoying at times. Just smells like hot oil. My vapors ook exactly like yours did at the end of the video. I have not had a single issue with my CCV mod. It is WELL worth it to get rid of the oily intercooler system in my opinion. That being said, I will most likely be switching my CCV over to a catch can system as well for 2 reasons. 1) to get rid of the smell and vapors 2) provide a vacuum back into the crankcase. I don't think the vacuum is needed but it was brought to my attention by my subscribers that having a slight vacuum in the crankcase can actually help provide a little more power and efficiency in the engine by allowing the pistons to move easier. This is something you can find in racing applications. 7.3s are far from race trucks but who doesn't want the possibility of a little bit of free HP hahaha.
@blowingdiesel

Hopefully one day I’ll get the motivation to get my engine bay as clean as yours heck my whole truck! Haha. I tried my best to not have any low spots but I’ll look it over again just to make sure. And I’ll be switching things up pretty soon too I had my truck running at a parking spot earlier today in front of a store and when I was walking back to it I could see the vapors coming out and to be honest I didn’t like it very much, so because of that and your other reasons I’ll be running some sort of catch can and back into the intake too.

I agree with blowing diesel you had one of the cleanest 7.3 iv ever seen, still sad you sold it. Though my CCV mod still blows quite a bit of white smoke, my exhaust doesn't unless cold start up. You guys think it fine? Now the previous owner did it and ran it all the way to back bumper and upon inspection has a lot of low points through out the line wondering if it could just be the oily residue from the build up in low points what do yall think?

@@johnarnold5739 I appreciate that man. I do miss it as well. These trucks naturally blow a lot of vapor. I would recommend grabbing a ping pong ball and setting it on your oil fill to see how much pressure is actually coming out. Thats a better indicator of actual blow by
@makeitbreakit7556
@makeitbreakit7556 3 года назад
I am a certified diesel technician. The only reason that the CCV mod can cause issues is that your engines crankcase pressures will increase. Before the mod the crankcase is always under vacuum that is created by the inlet restriction of your air filter and the amount of suction your turbo is creating. This in turn allows your turbo to be able to easily return oil to the crankcase and helps to prevent seal leaks and seal blow outs. Such as rear main seals, front main seals, turbo seals, oil pan gasket, etc. The advantage is that #1 you get colder air into the engine by not ingesting warm CCV air. #2 the gunk build up from the CCV will no longer occur which improves airflow. (This honestly doesn’t matter as much as you think) Boosted engines easily over come restriction with more boost. After all boost is just restriction to flow. #3 silicone boots, valves, and piston rings are will not be adversely affected since there will be no oil build up. #4 lastly the intercooler will be more efficient because it doesn’t have and insulating layer of oil inside it. THE BEST WAY to route the CCV is into the down pipe. This will cause a scavenging affect on the CCV gases and the exhaust will help to burn these gases. Aka no oil in the driveway. But if your engine already has a ton of blow by it’s better to play it safe and keep the CCV so that you don’t have turbo seal leaks and other seal leaks. Best of luck this is why it’s controversial!

@blowingdiesel 3 года назад
Thanks for the info! What are your thoughts on catch cans?
@makeitbreakit7556
@makeitbreakit7556 3 года назад
@@blowingdiesel They are a good solution to the issue but they still allow hot air from the crankcase into the engine and it adds to the amount of maintenance depending on how much blow by the engine has. I personally don’t have a lot of experience with them so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt. But I do know that a good exhaust Venturi or crankcase ventilation pump (found in many high-end Motorsports applications) would be better for all out performance and easy of ownership. That’s what we run our sled pull tractors and trucks.
@blowingdiesel
@blowingdiesel 3 года назад

I'm running a modified super duty turbo qith manifolds, up pipes, etc with a .84 exhaust housing, Turbomaster wastegate (basically a spring to control the gate) and its awesome. Its got the upgraded KC s300 turbine wheel, 66mm billet compressor and ported housing and on a manual trans truck, its fantastic. I am very happy with the effort that went into installing it. The truck actually makes 5 to 6 psi cruising down the highway at 65mph now and the turbo lights so much quicker under all situations. It has significantly reduced my smoke output and really did transform the truck. The only concern on the OBS turbo is that you wouldn't have the wastegate to control boot pressure (and ultimately shaft speed), but as long as you monitor drive pressures and don't have injectors bigger than about 180s, you'll probably be fine.

I flipped the doghouse around , cut the tube in the intake off and welded the hole, routed the hose under the booster , back up towards the battery with a catch can inline, back into the intake tract near the filter. Having 356k on my truck I’m sure it has lots of cc pressure so I did not want to vent it to atmosphere, it stinks and people think your trucks on fire. Lol, The way the nipple in the intake faces from the factory ,the turbo pulling air thru at high load actually pressurizes the crank case vent pushing into the engine. Big no no. That’s how you push seals ect... mine works well in two ways, re cycles oil vapors back into the engine, and any “oil” will stop in the catch can. IMO that’s the best way to do it.
@blowingdiesel

I respectfuly disagree based on personal experience. I'm a professional diesel tech by trade, did this [63/73/1.0 housing] along with many other upgrades/mods and got less than 1k miles before I started experiencing bearing howl. Charlie treated me excellent tho, highly recommended I run the journal bearing setup (I agreed) so he rebuilt my turbo and put a refund check of $300.00 (difference in cost between turbos) in with my rebuilt turbo. with that and my truck was down less than 2 weeks. GREAT customer service!! By the way, turbo performs pretty darn good to boot, and I honestly couldn't tell a difference in response between the two. On a side note, ran a Garrett gt4094R on my LBZ for years, HUGE difference and zero issues. This is why I went ball bearing on my old 7.3, results just weren't favorable.

@shaneprice6084
@shaneprice6084 3 года назад
The problem with this is the turbo pulls a vacuum this is International design and with out it the pressure can push the seal at the pan dipstick. If your running down the hay your motor can lock up and that pressure isn't good on the lower crank case. Having that little bit of oil going into the motor won't hurt anything other than popping a bust hose popping off is better than a blown motor any day. I'm going to say I don't think it really affects the intercooler just take it off once a year snd clean it.

I’ve heard that argument time and time again and it’s just not true. Plain and simple. If your OBS 7.3 is not intercooled, there is absolutely no reason to do this mod, and in fact it may cause problems. The main reason to NOT do this mod, is that your engine has been used to a certain level of crankcase pressures, and doing this mod will INCREASE those pressures because it is no longer vented, which can potentially cause oil leaks in numerous places where there are seals/gaskets. So if you experience oil leaks you did not have before doing this mod, I would either 1) reverse this mod and return back to stock, or 2) replace all the relevant seals Personally I don't think it's worth it unless you are doing this on a freshly rebuilt engine, as it really doesn't cause problems as long as people are making sure there is adequate flow through the intercooler system.
