My buddy Bryn Bode of Dette Flies fame, once asked me, "How do I tie a rusty spinner, but not tie the cutoff butt ends into the body?" I gave him a couple suggestions, all he promptly scoffed at. Apparently Bryn is very particular about his rusty spinners. So I put a pin in that question and thought on it. Took me a while, but it finally clicked.
You can find Bryn Bode at Dette Flies or on the cover of the new Mike Valla book, "Favorite Flies for the Catskills...." You can purchase that book here:
detteflies.com...
I'm in it too :).

Hi Nick, I do most of my fishing in the Willowemoc and a little tiny bit in Mongaup Creek near Roscoe and I was wondering what your go to terrestrial flies are

I personally don’t fish terrestrial flies. But if I did, I’d definitely be fishing something small. Not a huge hopper or anything. Basically something that lands softly. Like an ant pattern. A good ant pattern could fool a fish into thinking it’s also a mayfly. So you got a shot both ways. Maybe I’ll tie one up for a video. Thanks

Plenty of other materials that are better (imho) for wings on this pattern then cdc. Snowshoe rabbit, HiViz, many synthetics, hackle trimmed top and bottom. These can all be tied without bulk, are more durable then cdc, are less expensive and the flies don’t require special treatment every so often. Other then my opinion about wing material, excellent video.

It’s funny cause I think cdc is the absolute best wing material there is. Soft presentation, floats great. Looks great on the water. In my opinion it’s unbeatable for fishing flies. 🤷‍♂️

I was a skeptic of CDC as well, until I tried it, for some reason it dries up immediately on casting and floats for hours on even fast water. I am sold on the material. At the same time, all that obsession with the perfect angled tail and the head to become realistic, it is just fisherman psychology. trout dont care at all, a dead wet fly in the water looks nothing like a live one.
