CEBU BLUE Scam? / Do you own Epipremnum pinnatum OR Epipremnum pinnatum Cebu Blue?

Plant Lovers! I had to make this impromptu video about the Cebu Blue vs. the "normal" Epipremnum Pinnatum! Yesterday evening I discovered, that almost all sellers of those plants label their plants WRONG! And you, like me probably, did not buy a Cebu... like it was written. Do they do this on purpose to make a quick buck on this new plant craze? Is this another Pink Congo Story? Or do they also not know?
-- in a nutshell: Cebu Blue leaves a very pale and slightly more textured when they are juvenile, they don't have this dark green color.

For those looking to buy a Cebu blue and unsure of how to differentiate from the regular E. Pinnatum. The cebu blue has a silvery blue sheen to it that almost looks like the leaves were dusted with a baby blue shimmer powder. But It can’t be rubbed off. Much like the philodendron hastatum “silver sword”. Like variegation, the brighter the light the more prominent the silvery blue will show. The regular E. pinnatum in juvenile form especially have a relatively flat and smooth leaf surface much like a surface of a typical green E. aureum (Pothos) while the Cebu Blue has a more rippled like appearance almost like the M. Karstenianum but not as prominent. If you’re looking at a listing and the leaves do not have a silvery blue sheen to them and lack the rippled appearance it’s likely a mislabeled E. Pinnatum.

Great video looking forward to watching some of your videos! It just seems like there's not enough time in the day to watch all the videos about plants to expand my knowledge... I've been growing plants since I was a kid and helping and my mom's flower beds and neighbors Gardens. I'm now in my seventh decade I love how I learn something new everyday. My great-grandfather immigrated to America when he was just a kid. He died when he was in his 90s in the 1970s. I love your accent and I admire your ability to learn a second language especially English which supposedly is one of the hardest languages to learn. I had a student help me for a senior project when I first started teaching. He was from Japan and I guess his father was pretty wealthy because he was at a private school where only wealthy parents send their kids. He was helping in my classroom for his senior project and he told me that in Japan they have 52 letters or characters in their alphabet but each of those 52 make the same sound. Unlike English where we have long vowel short vowels, silent letters, diphthongs soft G hard G. C sounding like k or s and then you get to why which sometimes sounds like a consonant and sometimes sounds like a vowel I! So I love your accent and yes when you pronounce an S it sort of sounds like Z but I can't pronounce any words in German! All four of my children took four years of German and high school and one son even added two years of Latin to the four years of German. I struggled with French and Latin in high school but I think it was because I didn't do my job memorizing vocabulary and in French class we had people speaking French on audio tapes and the teacher would read the story and the textbook and a textbook was always closed on our end. I'm a visual learner and I needed to see the word while she was pronouncing it so I'm glad I didn't have to learn how to speak French fluently! So I admire all of you and your that can speak English so very very well! And I don't mind the vacuum sweeper there I filmed my videos for RU-vid and sometimes the dust mop has been in the background teehee

I know this is an older video now. I just wanted to tell you my Epipremnum Pinnatum I bought a few weeks ago as a large stem cutting/cuttings is already starting to fenestrate too. Right now it is just wee holes down the mid rib. At first I was afraid it was a bug dining but now the wee dots are starting to open up and are too evenly spaced and same on many leaves. So exciting. Now my stem cuttings these new leaves started from are really large. About as big around as my thumb. the new growth coming from them is 6 to 10 inches long so very immature leaves. Even so I now have holes and one even smaller split. I just discovered this last night. Such fun plants. I was so pleased with the first one I bought a second from the same seller. They came semi potted more to protect the roots during shipping than a pot to live in. So glad I saw your video. But Girl is has cost me some change. Hahahahaha Well spent for the joy it is giving me.

I wish I had seen this very informative video before uploading my unboxing of a plant trade that yielded me a "cebu blue" epipremnum. I noted that the leaves didn't have the characteristic blue sheen, thinking it had to do with them being cuttings that had been in the mail for a few days in intense heat. I'm thinking I might have the other one, but I hope not! Thanks for the in depth video! New subbie, here!

That's a bummer that there is so much mislabeling happening with this plant. To me, cebu blue is so easy to recognize because of the coloring. In my area the regular form of epipremnum pinnatum is so much harder to find. I'd be thrilled to have yours, it's beautiful!

wesome video, I appreciate the useful information, I have heard that if you have a Cebu Blue that as it matures it's leaves will split, I'm not disappointed that it isn't the case I love my Cebu Blu, it's big and full and has those gorgeous blue shimmery leaves. It's just so funny when it comes to identifying our plants what goes on in the plant world. Thanks again, and lucky for you that you have a normal Epipremnum, and that it's got those awesoem split leaves, I'm sad that I can't find one like this, I think it's considered rare here in the US, maybe someday they will be more readily available.

From the Costa Farms grower and there is a video out on it under Baltic Blue. I have the cebublue.. Like you I am thrilled to have the young plant with fenestrations. This is all so fun and fasinating and a win win for us plant lovers because both plants are gorgeous. OH the one thing I noticed so far on the Baltic Blue verses the EP I have are there are no mid line holes in the leaves yet. Maybe too young or maybe they just split and do not fet the little holes mid line.

now you know! it takes more than couple of months - more likely years, that the leaves change so significantly. also - as soon as you get the first split leaf, you will know for sure! in Cebu Blue - it takes between 15-20 yrs to occur (at least that is what I read).

The Thailand variation has the fenestrations at an early age- like the ones originally from Cebu Island... the one that has been cloned/cultured in the USA and distributed is different and will not show those fenestrations for many many years. I have spoken to many nurseries and experts as well as looked online, but I also have one with frustrating leaves but purchased it from a very trusted seller that does their research. One nursery actually had both in stock and they really are the same, just one is starting to show fenestrations (and more expensive as it was imported and not a clone). What you have does not look like it though- it does not look like the silver-blue I have here beside me... I have heard of people selling pothos and claiminng it to be epipneprum for a profit- beware places like Etsy and people who just want to make a quick profit (saw a pink congo on there for $200 recently lol)

I’m curious as to the value of you Pinnatum as opposed to the real Cebu Blue. It’s to bad you live in Berlin, otherwise I would send you tons of cutting from my real Cebu Blue. I’m constantly cutting it to keep it more sphere like as it is in a hanging basket. It grows so fast 💨. I’m sure the postage cost would not really make it worth it in the end, but if you want to pay the postage....I would be happy to send you cuttings ☺️. Thanks for this interesting video, I never knew there was such a controversy over the exact plant species name. I knew from the start that the plant should have that blue-ish tinge. I think I have educated myself on certain plants that I intend to buy, so I’m not disappointed that the seller marked it wrong. I’ve seen that done so many times here in the states it’s crazy. Sometimes it’s the actual store employees who put the tags on the plants and they don’t know or care that they have just labeled 5 different plants with the same tag, I think it comes down to the price on the tags, so they figure, 🤷🏻‍♀️ who cares....WE CARE! I want a proper label on the plant I buy. I hope in the end the seller does send you the correct plant, or at least gives you a refund or credit. Let us know what happens. Thank you. Happy Planting 💜🌺🌸

I'm here because I got bored of quarantine and just impulsively bought 2 cebu blue juveniles. lol. These plants are endemic here in Cebu, Philippines so they're a wayyy cheaper option than my dream plant baby, monstera deliciosa. Thanks for all the info in the video. I'm excited to grow these babies.

So funny how plant prices differ globally. Monstera deliciosa is so common in america you can buy a 4in baby for $5 at trader joes, lol. But here cebu blue's are being sold for like $20 for 3 leaves 😳

I am not crossing that the plantb looks different in earlier stage but from my experience i am telling that it depends on nutrition you are giving to your epipernum ( so called dragon tail plant ) and it is not very hard to grow it and is very cheap too , . Thank you for the information though

winding leaf But both plants are wonderful huh? I might be wrong, but I thought age wasn't as much a factor as the fact that it was allowed to climb. They split when it stops hanging or crawling and starts scrambling up, up,up. Maybe that is why yours started to split once you gave it support.🙂 Thanx for your videos.

@@susanpratt4061 HI Susan, mine is the normal Epi - that splits right at the start (and climbing helps). The Cebu Blue only spilts when it reaches maturity - and is allowed to climb.

Thanks for this Video! They already sell the same plant you bought as a cebu blue and I wanted to buy it. But now I won't, because if it is not a real rare one I think it's a little bit expensive. I think your plant is looking wonderful! And now I think I will buy a normal epipremnum, but not at that site.

@@13bunnylove13 Yes I am sure. :) I got the Regular Epipremnum Pinnatum or the green form which was sold to me as Cebu blue last May. After 4 months of searching, I now have 2 kinds of Cebu blue. The 1st one is native here in the Philippines with bluish silver leaves, while the other one is from thailand labeled as Cebu blue and its leaves color are Greenish blue. I’m still confused why the one from thailand is labeled as Cebu blue.I just hope I could share photos here in youtube. I’ll try to make a video soon.

Im from Philippines and just got my cebu blue 2weeks ago. Juvi leaves have splits already. I have 2 leaves only but both leaves have splits.. The one they called cebu blue with small leaves and have no split leaves are called "local cebu blue" here in PH. Maybe thats the one my seller explained to me. You are right if the seller does not know the difference between the local cebu blue and the authentic cebu blue. Happy planting.

Oh my giddy aunt... this cleared more than one foggy patch for me, good to know about the cebu blue v no blue at all lol But for me, an interesting piece of info I read in exotic rainforest dot com is that what I bought as Epipremnum Brazil or Pothos Brazil, is actually not at all Epi/Pothos it is a Philodendron: Philodendron Hederaceum Brazil (I'm going to assume that Brazil still stands) and a "z" not an "s" Now, like you, I'm glad I have Mr brazil in my life, it doesn't bother me that I have mis sold a plant, I much prefer to have it rather than not have it... but it does bug me that so many times we see the same plants with different names, I like indoor climbers and it is very frustrating when I think I found a new variety, and its in fact a fictitious name to make sales. And yes "rare plant" puts me right off that seller, I instantly leave and find it elsewhere - often cheaper too :-) Thank you very much indeed for posting your findings for us all to see. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

thank you for this informative video. Unfortunately, I'm from the Philippines, and I cannot find any sellers of the exact "Cebu Blue" pothos, some would show me the variety that has the split leaves already. I also was confused why it had split at a very young age, thank goodness I came across your video. I have few questions: 1. so does the real Cebu Blue, split also as they mature and climb? 2. do you happen to know any seller that ship here in the Philippines? (I know, I know its strange to have one imported where it originated) I really badly want to have one :-(

In the U.S. the Cebu blue is easy to find and the "normal" epipremnum pinnatum is hard to find. Mostly because people who don't know lable golden pothos as epipremnum pinnatum instead of epipremnum aureum.

Zumindest so mein Eindruck.

I'm only at almost the four minute Mark and since you began this video I've been doubting this is Cebu blue. The leaves are too big and it's too dark green... If that makes any sense I know it's 2 years later and I just found your channel by looking at another person's subscription list. I'm going to subscribe to your Channel... I also have a RU-vid channel Hearts II only have a few hundred Maybe 400 subscribers. I have hundreds of houseplants and over 70 orchids. I'm new to orchids I've only been collecting them for the past 3 years. Anyhow I can't wait to see the rest of your video and see what conclusion you come to about your plant. It's a beautiful plant but it doesn't look a lot like my Cebu blue except for the shape of the leaf but not the size or the color. I've been propagating mine I just take a long stem cutting and then Cut Above and Below the node so I have this little half inch inch long stem left on the leaf. I then put them and recycled glass or plastic iced tea or water bottles. It doesn't matter if the leaf goes down into the water and they root very very quickly. I've taken dozens of cuttings off of my plant but I was lucky to find at a big-box store Walmart for $15 a year ago. I only had one plant in the plant department and it just happened to be a Cebu blue. I'm going back to your video and I'm also subscribing

It’s exciting that yours has fenestrations already but I really think that might not be a Cebu Blue. I have a Cebu Blue that is one of my most favorite plants and mine has grown so large since I bought it that I have to carry it with two hands because it is large, heavy and lush. Leone is really quite silvery blue and looks very different in color from yours. Yours is pretty though. I am not trying to bash here. The Cebu Blue is quite elusive, I realize, and I’ve always felt it shouldn’t be because log it’s beauty. Still, your plant has a great, healthy color. I’m excited for its growth.
