A common mistake that is made by people who sing this song is the interpretation that the lyrics are sad. They're not! It is much more effective when the singer portrays the character as a sassy woman who doesn't feel like committing to anyone. If you know what the poem in this song means, think about it that way. :)
I used to sing this in an Italian restaurant- I would tell my customers it is about a slut having her fun with a poor boy. People like scandal. It was my most requested tune.
Italian teenage girls were often taught this song by mothers, partlyfor the sheer joy of singing but also because the words contain a kind of advice or message for young teens as they approach womanhood, courting, love etc and men paying attention to them. The message, basically, is that you don't have to love a young man simply because he fancies you. Justbecause you happen to like one particular beautiful male flower doesn't mean you have to dismiss all the rest of the masculine flowers... It's actually a female flirtatious song, with a bit of a cruel sting in it, warning young suitors to beware because the girl singing this song, in the first person, is desired by many and so she is under no obligation to love you in return, just because you have feelings for her. Actually, it is subtly derogatory because she is singing her song to a young shepherd who is in love with herand basicay saying that, if he thinks sheshould love him back, simply because he loves her, then he must be a very gullible fool, an absolute sucker for pain and emotional misery and she feels sorry for him. Italian society has no need for finism because, even when this old song was composed, it was a very matriarchal society, where women call the shots inlove, but the guys can always try their luck and, maybe, someone might accept them as their lover. But, I suspect thelady inthis song was hoping to do better than a humble shepherd, for a suitor.... Maybe she was a gold digger? But most likely, just young and flitatious and wanting to sample love's smorgasbord of suitors.
@@rainashay It would be great for a flirty pretty female who could put on all the flirty airs and graces.... Preferably blonde and sexy, showing a bit of cleavage, with long skirt, heaps of frills and lace and waving a fan... The kind a woman holds in her hand, not her fanny, though...
Today RU-vid banned in Turkey by authoterian prime minister but no matter what they do they cant prevent us from listening these great musics and share the same values with the world. This is the first song after I changed my VPN and access to youtube.... Greetings from Istanbul with hope of freedome for all of us
I do indeed hope you get your freedom friend. Maybe one day it won't be like this. Oppressive and destructive. Maybe one day freedom will be everywhere.
I sang this for a performance in high school. I am 54 years old now and it's funny how I still remain the lyrics. Beautiful song. I wish I could go back for just a moment. This really takes me back. ❤
my classmate and i share a vocal coach; i’m a soprano and she’s a mezzo. she’s going to sing this for her abrsm g8 exam, and i heard her sing this today and fell in love with the song; it’s so beautiful.
I'm learning this with my vocal coach as an introduction to classical. I definitely don't sound as beautiful as Cecilia Bartoli but I'm getting there!!
kinddove That's good! Classical is very fun to do, I've been learning classical for a few years and I quite enjoy it. Have fun and best of luck to you with this song
@@singhsinga4592 she's not even slightly ingolata? As a genuine question, at what point was she throaty? Perhaps I missed it because I'm so in love with her voice...
TheGkizz in my opinion, they are interpreting her voice type as a vocal technique. She is a deeper mezzo, probably even could be an alto. To an untrained ear that sounds throaty, she just has thicker vocal folds.
I started singing classes (clasical) and my teacher told me this will be my first aria :D this is a very bautiful song, and Cecilia Bartoli is an amazing soprano!
My mother has a cd with this track on it and I remember setting the table while she was preparing dinner if we had guests over. I’d feel like a little ballerina setting the table and I feel I’ll always have beautiful memories listening to this song
WOW! I had this song in my head today and had to look it up. So glad I did. It was one of my assigned pieces whne I was a vocal student '(85-'89) Internet access is so much better than having to sit in the music dept library and listen to a vinyl album. Good times :-)
These amazements are precious and fleeting. Cecilia has been the best new soprano ever since the '90's. She has been the voice of a gorgeous farfalla, He skill set has brought tears and wellings to heaven in the very fibers of millions of we mortals. We can express our gratitude; we can never express our profound appreciation that she has come forth to share this amazing voice.
Have to sing this for my audition for the Southern Region Music Festival. I'm hoping I'll get a high enough score to qualify for all state too. It's really a beautiful song.
Brava , e una voce bellisima con un tosto celestiale. Per Cecilia Bartoli e una voce di qualita storica, grazie tanti Cecilia per il tuo canto per tutti noi, BRAVAA!!!!
without doubt my absolute favorite of Cecilia Bartoli. The CD where this track is listed on is also my number 1, 2, and 3 of Bartoli. The other CD's are great, really great, but this one jumps out (for me, personally) so high.... It can get me to tears nearly everytime I listen to it.
This was my audition song for Districit Choir a couple years ago. Such a pretty song!! I might be the weirdest 18 year old ever cuz I'm from Missouri and I'm in love with opera and ballet :)
I love this song and am learning it as I am a mezzo sop but can hit the high G rarely used in music, which could be used in a beautiful cadenza in this song. Love cecilia
A music teacher of mine many moons ago told me that a great singer doesn't make things happen, they let them happen. A great singer will always make it look easy!
Cecilia Bartoli and Georg Fischer partnership resulted in this elegant rendition. I'm sure that this released lots of endorphins in our brains. Thanks for posting this gem.
I wish she wouldn't close her eyes when she sings. Gorgeous artist. A simple pure song made complex and then simple again. Not easy to do, especially for someone who sings much more complicated songs most of the time.
I did this my junior year of HS in 1994, for solo and ensemble contest (received a superior rating) and then the next year for college auditions. I remember it being challenging but I finally got it wit a lot of practicing.
I love singing this song. Cecilia was my inspiration, as soon as I heard it I had to sing it! I love singing opera and this i believe might be my favorite :)
It is definitely one of my favorites! It was the first Italian Art Song I ever learned in 1990. I went on to get a Bachelors and Masters in Voice. I was HOOKED! Best decision ever!
Emanuel Mallory Because it's beautiful. Beauty can overwhelm the senses and cause one to cry. It's just a thing that happens, and that's the true beauty of art my friend.
@@annasophia2826 no she isn't.. and they're not morbid. She's saying she's very touched by him saying he loves her, and that's very nice, but he mustn't assume that he's the only one for her and she's still going to go out with other men too.
0:31 The opening notes: C - D♭- B♭- B♭- C - A♭ are the same of Coldplay, Joe Satriani, Cat Stevens, Alizée, Verdes etc. Each of them has its own variation. They all give the same feeling: when you can tell if the first chord of the phrase is a major or a minor.
Sang this for a competition about 5 years ago... was a fun piece to learn, but a bit hard to go from super low to super high. Great that the girl (who the piece is "narrated by", NOT THE PERFORMER), was a flirty/player girl. That made it even more fun! :D

But if you think that I must in return love only you, Little shepherd, you are subject To deceiving yourself easily. The beautiful purple rose Will Silvia choose today; With the excuse of its thorns, Tomorrow, then, will she despise it. But the advice of the men I will not follow - Just because the lily pleases me, I do not have to despise the other flowers.
