Back in the Adirondacks! This weekend I find myself at the Cedar River Flow for two nights of canoe camping
The Cedar River Flow is a nice little remote lake. Swimming, good food, loons, hammocks and good company. The weekend did not disappoint.

In 1979, after I graduated from high school and my brother having just graduated from college, backpacked from Blue Mountain Lake to Cedar River Flow and back. That was a lot of hiking, but memorable.

I canoed Cedar rivers back in the 70's . Like every experience in the Adirondacks it's total serenity. I love canoeing. The mist relaxing experience you could wish for .

Great video. I used to go to the Cedar River Flow and the Moose River Plains a couple of times a year back in the late 1980's and 1990's with 3 other friends from work. We were all police officers and enjoyed getting away to peace and quiet. If I remember correctly, that channel that you canoed up until you reached the beaver dam is the same channel that we took but the beaver dam was really small and we were able to pull our canoes over it. We continued up the channel and came to a lean-to that NYS DEC has on the right side of the channel which is just off a hiking trail that is off the Moose River Road. It did take us a few tries to find the beginning of the channel. Your video brought back good memories as two of my friends have pass away and I'm planning on going back up there in the next few weeks.
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods Год назад
I have heard you can continue past the beaver dam to continue on to the lean to. We didn't have much interest at that point, it was getting quite hot. If I find myself back there I may give it a go. Thank you for sharing your past adventures. Sorry to hear about your friends passing. However I am glad to hear the video helped bring you back for a bit. Enjoy your time out there. It is getting to be the perfect time of year for it.

Well said. The channels seem to meander around and at times seems to dead end. But if your observant you can notice the areas with current that lets you know you on your way to the cedar river.

I always found it helpful to look at the way the plants were moving underwater. I reached several dead ends. Someone hung an old frying pan up in the tree to help guide people in the right direction. Fun trip

I'm gonna be heading up to the Adirondacks this spring . Up to Olmsteadville, NY going to test drive a few Hornbeck boats, gotta feeling I'm gonna buy one, probably the 'New Trick 15' . then campout at my brother's place in Chestertown on the Schroon River. Thanks for sharing , I really enjoy both of your vidoes, and I learn a lot!

I worked as a park ranger for DEC back in the early to late 90s and was put up in the cabin at the gatehouse at the Dam area. My duties were to work under the supervision of the Forest Ranger assigned to that area. I was the eyes in the woods they'd say. Checking the log in boxes, paroling the interior sites, 140 last I knew. Issuing camping permits, monitoring road and trail conditions and greeting campers. Had you ventured further through the channels you would eventually come on to the Cedar River itself. Anywhere from 10 to 30 feet wide it goes a very long way with informal campsites all through. And it's loaded with trout that hide under the banks.
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods Год назад
Thank you for the information! When you say the Cedar River goes a very long way..... any approximate mileage guesses? And would I be able to paddle a lightweight kevlar canoe up it without destroying it? I would very much be interested in going back and checking it out. Thanks again for the information
@briggs112277
@briggs112277 Год назад
Nice view but not the main beaver dam. You were close though. There are a few miles of good river to explore after the dam as well as a nice lean to up there
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods Год назад
We weren't quite sure, but we were sure we didn't want to continue on. Thank you for confirming that wasn't the big dam. Now I know for certain. We did know that the river above the dam led to a lean to. Didn't feel particularly driven to get there. It was fun paddling to get to where we did though.

If you take your canoe, turn it upside down and put one end in the crotch of a couple trees and put the tarp over the canoe that makes a nice shelter in bad weather.
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods Год назад
I have seen people do that. I would never do that with the canoe I am using. Perhaps I am a bit paranoid, but I would be scared to death that in a windy situation the swaying trees would damage my canoe.

Enjoyed your adventure. It's been on my list of places to visit so you definitely pushed me in that direction. Hopefully I can get an overnight in up there before the end of autumn. A couple of questions...1. Do you know who the maker is of the fire box Craig has? 2. It looks like there's enough air space that it didn't scorch the table. Is that correct? One last thing, I've not completed the entire NPT but have done many sections. If I can do anything to help you out, just let me know. Until next time...be well.
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods Год назад
It is quite nice out there. I hope you get a chance to get out there. The fire box is made by firebox. You are correct, there was no scorching of the table.
