Welcome to another walking stick build! This carved walking stick is made out of lightweight cedar and is adorned with several meaningful items that the client has requested. A mixture of carvings, woodburning, epoxy and natural stone on the top. Near the end I show how to make a decorative snake knot for the lanyard, stick around for that part!
Hope you enjoy the build and leave a comment below. I try and answer any and all questions or comments left by you.

Awesome sticks brother. Im not bashing your lanyards, but I think your sticks demand leather as nice as they are. I'm just not a paracord kinda guy when it comes to really nice sticks. Just a compliment. Keep up the good work.
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich 9 месяцев назад
Thank you very much! I've done a few with leather and I agree, it takes it up another notch... however I can get my hands on paracord much easier than leather so I tend to go that route... but you are right, a nice leather wrap makes a great grip and feels better as well. Thanks for watching!
@arctain1
@arctain1 5 месяцев назад
Hey - just as a friendly tip… if you attach some leather to each side of your bench vise, it will put a stop to that slippage, and will keep your vise from marring your wood. 😁

@@JasonHedrich - You're welcome... I just glued mine on, knowing that it will get abused in a vise... that way, I can easily replace later if needed

I tried your epoxy resin idea on a walking stick I made. I used the Dremel to bore out lines along the sides of the stick and filled it with dyed epoxy with citrine pieces in it. I used a UV epoxy resin, as I was filling it in I hit it with the black light which made it easier for pouring around it. Thanks for your inspiration!

@@Mystic_Christopher sure thing. I list them as subtitles in the videos. But I use spojeshave and drawknife to take the bark off

I like it but, I would have used fine glitter on the epoxy that you used in the crack. I have used glitter on other sticks I have made, mostly just to see how they look afterwards, IK usually vary the colors. I have actually made one where the colors looked like fire, lol that was a fluke but I liked it. I gave the stick to a friend.
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich Месяц назад
That could work… but that’s the Color the client wanted so I stuck to it. I still like how it turned out. I did one stick with red epoxy, that really stood out against the wood grain…

Greetings, stumbled on this video and love the hiking stick. One question I have is, could you go into greater detail on the epoxy product you use? I have a couple of cedar sticks with cracks in them and am at a loss on what product to use to fill them in. Thanks on advance.
@JasonHedrich

Thanks for watching! It's standard 2 part epoxy. JB Weld is a good product that's easy to find. Hope that helps

If you did not use epoxy on the check, would it continue to split or does the epoxy stabilize the check?
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich Год назад
At this point, the stick was completely dry and the check would not have expanded more… but the epoxy strengthened the stick and sealed the check. The stick is as good as solid when cured

Jason , and ideas on making my own wood tent stakes ? What wood should I use ? Thanks 😊
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich 7 месяцев назад
Interesting project, I would imagine any hardwood would work… ash, oak, hickory. Pay attention to the direction of the grain to align the direction to resist the applied forces depending on the shape you design. Hope that helps! Let me know how they turn out

Thanks for the instructional! How long was this walking stick? How long do you need to wait for the wood to dry before you start working it or apply finish?
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich 6 месяцев назад
It was about 54" tall. I usually wait 4 to 6 months for the sticks to dry. They give a distinctive sound when they are dry when you knock them against concrete. That lets me know when it's ready to work on

I am new to stick making and what epoxy do you recommend using the filling cracks on the wood?
@JasonHedrich
@JasonHedrich 11 месяцев назад
For smaller checks and cracks, I’ve used 5 minute epoxy. It works well, it’s thicker so less drips and you can Color it. For larger checks, I’ve used slow cure 2 part epoxy. Honestly either works well, just depends on availability and cost

Look out at 4:11...what if the blade breaks? Or the shaft rolls? You don't want this to happen to you, buddy. I suggest putting something extra between the wood and your leg, just in case. Safety first.
