Hello, I'm a structural engineer with a passion for woodworking and building new things. Hopefully sharing a few tips along the way. For sponsorships and business inquiries, feel free to shoot me an email
I need to get some those carving bits and knives. I'm not doing too bad using what I have but it would help a lot to have some better tools. Nice walking stick and video.
I think I like your Celtic/basket weave pattern best but the first one better with the darker color. Either way both are very nice. I'm working on some walking sticks and want to try doing a basket weave but trying to free hand the lines for it don't work well. The trick you did with paper and making marks where the lines needed to be I think will work out for me too. There's always a solution to make things easier and quicker but sometimes the solutions are so obvious they're not easily seen. Great idea, good video.
I made a lot of thick shavings with the hand plane from 2 different wood types, cut each petal, then glued them onto a carved stick and shaped the thorns for realism. The box was made without fasteners, just glued joints.
Thanks, it takes about 30 hours to complete. Price varies depending on what is to be carved and out of what type of wood. Please write to me at jhedrich73@gmail.com and we can discuss price
@@JasonHedrich I, too dabble in making canes and shillelaghs and traditional dance regalia (warclubs, staffs). And after all the various canes, clubs, shillelaghs, etc. that I've seen online, I have to say that this and the Canadian Shillelagh are easily the most beautiful work I've seen. You have a great eye as well as a huge creative streak. P.S. I'm a fellow Canadian, eh
@@sheldondillon thank you! I truly appreciate the kind words. I’m glad you like my carvings and are enjoying the videos. And being from Canada helps too😀
Friendly observation !!! Your chisels , your whittling & woodcarving knife & your Forstner drill bit , seem to need a lot of pressure for them to work in wood for you !!!
I tried to make one like this because it one of my favourites. I don't have a drill press but I drilled it by hand and it turned out pretty good. I really enjoy your work. As a retired old guy of 75 I needed a hobby and making sticks has filled the bill well. Carry on and keep up the good work. Mike
@@mikelavictoire5665 100% agree its harder to do with a hand drill. But even with the drill press, because the diameter varies on a natural stick, it will be difficult to keep everything lined up. But thats the beauty of a natural stick, a little be off is still ok!
Thank you very much. I started with just a carving knife, one chisel and a hand saw. The spokeshave really helps to shape the stick, and those you can get used or from a big box stores. Hope that helps
I like it but, I would have used fine glitter on the epoxy that you used in the crack. I have used glitter on other sticks I have made, mostly just to see how they look afterwards, IK usually vary the colors. I have actually made one where the colors looked like fire, lol that was a fluke but I liked it. I gave the stick to a friend.
That could work… but that’s the Color the client wanted so I stuck to it. I still like how it turned out. I did one stick with red epoxy, that really stood out against the wood grain…
You are a freakin bad ass! Dude your hands are a gift to this abrasive world! I share your passion and am awed by your knowledge! May i ask how you came to this work and were you passed down the tools? Teachings? Did u go to school? What does something like this cost? Where are you from? And how old are you? Youre skills look like one who has had lots of practice! I love it, thank you!
Thank you very much! I’ll try and answer as best I can… I’m a structural engineer by training and that’s my day job, I try and do carving as a hobby on my free time. I took a short carving course about 20 years ago and have been teaching myself as I go. Some tools were passed down through family but mostly bought them as I needed them (and could afford them). I learn from each project and still have a lot to learn but it’s a great journey and the woodworking community is great at sharing knowledge. Thanks for watching and your kind words!
Omg I have been blessed truly tonight by your videos!! I just watched the citrine crystal one and I'm just tickled pink excited ! I have never seen such beautiful, inspiring work like this level! I will be thoroughly watching, learning and sharing with my other similarly yolked friends and am thankful from the bottom of my heart! You're gift is one in a million and I hope you know it! Can't wait, rock on, and God bless!
Thank you very much! Yes, I've kept most of the sticks I've made because I like them, but they are made to be used, so I do sell a few or give them away. Thanks for your kind words and for watching
Hello Jason. Love the video and staff. I am just getting started with wood working and I am very interested in using hand tools rather than electrical. What would you suggest as the essential tools i would need to get started? Thank you for any info! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks for writing… start simple, straight chisels, one carving knife and a saw. Find out what you like doing and add tools as you need. I started that way and very slowly added tools. Most were second hand tools and used finds…
