@Dave Griffin My grandma explained it to me like this: when the elders came north and started families they would send their kids back south for the summer/holidays to visit their distant family, or work the farm. Over the years they started coming back up with a slight accent. And a nice ass tan, from my own experience 😄. We understand most southern accents, twangs and drolls because it's similar to our own in the midwest. tl;dr - the Midwestern accent is a spin-off from the southern accent 😂

@Bubbles Bubs that's gotta be really hard to follow. I got 2 people that I have known my entire life that are hard to understand til this day, a jamaican and a x coke head. I just try to catch every 3rd or 4th word and try to make sense of what they are saying. The both have the nerve to get mad at me tho. The Jamaican tried to get me to type a letter for him one day.
