@Dave Griffin My grandma explained it to me like this: when the elders came north and started families they would send their kids back south for the summer/holidays to visit their distant family, or work the farm. Over the years they started coming back up with a slight accent. And a nice ass tan, from my own experience 😄. We understand most southern accents, twangs and drolls because it's similar to our own in the midwest. tl;dr - the Midwestern accent is a spin-off from the southern accent 😂

I can relate. I moves to a small town in Tennessee near the Kentucky boarder, to work in a factory. The lady that trained me had a deep Kentucky accent. She told me the station we was working at was called the O-4. Didn't think to much about the name, until, about a week later when I happen to look up and the sign over our station read Old Floor. I laughed so hard because I was calling it the O-4 and asked her why she didn't tell me I was pronouncing it wrong. She said to me, " I reckon you say it like I do" We joked about that forever😂😂
