Celebrate San Diego was a 1986/1987 series about cities and neighborhoods of San Diego County.
Anchor/reporter Connie Healy and a team of photographers roamed the county and delivered in-depth profiles of several towns and communities in the area. They were history lessons focusing on changes and progress. Many long-term residents she spoke with reflected on what it was like to grow up in their town and what they thought of all the changes they had seen.
One really gets a sense of what the character and personality of the community was like in each profile--and how diverse the county really is. Communities in this special are Coronado, Ocean Beach, Solana Beach, Pacific Beach, Point Loma, and Rancho Santa Fe. All originally aired in 1987.

Ah the good old days. I grew up in the 80s. Going to the movies, mall, and arcade. Catching fireflies above the stadium in Serra Mesa. Listening to B100 and Q106 and making mix tapes recording off the radio. Going to La Jolla Shores and boogie boarding. If I would've known the 70s, 80s, and early 90s would be the best decades ever, and that the world would eventually turn into what it is now, I would've enjoyed those times so much more and gone out and done even more. I wish I could go back, even for a day or a week and just walk around and experience it again.

I totally resonate with your comment bro, I moved here in 2001 when I was 11 and the changes I’ve seen since then bum me out. Although to be fair, folks who lived here in the 40s 50s and 60s would probably say the same thing about your time there.

Yep, I grew up in the 70s 80s in Serra Mesa, went John Paul Jones , Taft, Kearney High. I used to ride my bike to the bay from there fish. Don't remember fire flies though.

@@silentmajority8365There was plenty of diversity at this time. There just wasn't social media. Thats what messed it up.

I dropped out of SDSU 12 shy of my BA Art, and enlisted in the USMC That year. SD was Americas Finest City. I have lived here 50 of my 61 years. Ch. 8 wasnt fake news. Today SD is morphing into SF. My wife and I are leaving next month. I miss what SD was.

I agree with you, news used to be real, not fake. This was my San Diego and that is how I remember it. I still love it although no one speaks English and it seems most folks at the beach are 25 to 50 pounds overweight. Everything is overpriced, unaffordable, and run-down. Everywhere is full of homeless folks. It's sad. The people have changed, and the Deep State has pilaged San Diego. But still, it's where my heart is.

Semper Fi, I did my infantry training out in C.Pendleton in late 75. It was Americas finest city but did it ever change fast. I live outside Tampa,we don't have the mts & its humid but for the cost of living its pretty nice.

San Marcos is a great town. I remember in the early 70’s living in Vista and my cousins lived in San Marcos and it seemed like such a hick town. I’d give anything g to go back.

Yet I was one of the few taxi drivers that drive there and pick people up and take them to the airport. A lot of great memories driving to and through RSF AND Encinitas and Solana Beach

I grew up in Serra Mesa in the 70s and 80s. This place had a small town vibe and truly was paradise. As time goes on and San Diego declines it becomes much harder to watch vids like these. I miss the Red City and the Red State of California. Its just gone downhill since it turned Blue.

I have very good memories of San Diego in the 80s and am a sucker for nostalgia, but having watched many videos in this series of archival stories, what's striking are the communities that don't seem to be covered, like San Diego's African-American and Latino communities. If I've missed that coverage, please set me straight.
@johnbeckwith1361
@johnbeckwith1361 4 дня назад
We didn't have those communities unless you want to visit a poor crime ridden area and I don't consider those "communities". You are referring to a time when blacks would not work retail. Didnt go to college. Gang activity was strong. People getting killed for their shoes for instance. I worked at a home depot back then. We had 3 black people working there and had a black store manager for awhile. Not much to cover. If you want to learn about "community" in San Diego that is the last thing to do.
