Godzilla Minus One is a love letter to men. And it also has a really big lizard.
Go to galaxylamps.co/robothead use the code “ROBOTHEAD” and get your Galaxy Projector 2.0!
Godzilla Minus One embarrasses Hollywood by making a fantastic film at a fraction of the usual bloated Hollywood price. And most of all, this film is a celebration of men and the sacrifices they make in times of conflict. Japan just made the best film of the year. By a very long way.

Honestly my favorite character was Sumiko, the neighbor who lashed out at Shikishima for coming back alive. She lost EVERYTHING and was clearly ready to give up and die. But she when she saw Shikishima take in a young woman and a baby for no other reason than that it was the right thing to do, she found a new purpose in helping them. She found a new family all of them when she could have been swallowed up by her loss, and that takes incredible strength. This film is like an answer to Grave of the Fireflies, where we see two orphans slowly starve to death because of the indifference of their neighbors who were caught up in their own suffering. The smallest acts of kindness or cruelty can ripple throughout the world and change lives for better or worse.

What I liked about her character too is that she had an arch of sorts. She hated the protagonist at first; blamed him for the destruction around her. She was just another part of the ruined landscape. But eventually she, like you said, forgave him and even became a friend; helping to rebuild the wrecked world around her.

Whats made it better is that even though this film celebrates man, it doesn’t downplay women as well. Noriko was well portrayed as a strong woman as well. She adopted Akiko though she had nothing, took up a job to support Koichi though she didnt need to and sacrifice herself to save Koichi. She was his pillar when he was going through ptsd. This is unlike those woke films where they dumb down or ignore the male characters development in order to make the female character stand out.

I respectfully disagree as to why the girl sought a job. She said she needed to be more "independent". That HE wouldn't find a wife this way. she was preparing to move out & support herself. This scene is moving on many levels. She is living with a man she loves, but he will not marry her. 1940s Japan, this is disgraceful for her. She moved in out of true desperation. But she is not desperate anymore. She showed shame when she told his friends that she "is nobody's wife". Her saying that HE would not find a wife this way, was an indirect way of saying, she'd never find a husband this way.

I took my 10yr old nephew to see this opening weekend, and we absolutely loved it! The theater was packed, and it was really nice to see the audience as engaged as we were. Plenty of chuckles and choking back tears from everyone throughout. My biggest regret is not being able to see it in IMAX (closest one is 3 hours away) and by the time I'll be close to one later this week, IMAX is going to be showing Wonka instead of this masterpiece. Absolute travesty, but I'm just happy my nephew and the audience we were with all enjoyed the hell out of this film. 10/10

What are your local theatres? Here in the southeastern US, Malco is one of our more dominant chains. They have a new type of theater called MXT. This has a much larger than normal screen (though smaller than IMAX), dolby atmos, and a 4k laser projector. It is kind of IMAX like. Ive seen it in one of those, and in a regular Atmos theater. The MXT was much more in line with IMAX sound wise. Godzillas roars were almost deafening, you could feel them inaide of you. Standard Atmos was far less impressive. AMC or whatever is local to you may have something similar. EDIT: AMC has Dolby Cinema, which is a premium experience tuned by Dolby. They have Atmos and Dolby Vision which is dual 4k laser projectors. May be a nice alternative to IMAX.

I had a question with this being a PG-13 movie how as your 10 year old nephew thought of Godzilla? he's the most frightening and most dangerous since the original and how was the sound in the theatre? I remember seeing Godzilla (2014) and that was quite loud especially when Godzilla roars

I saw it on the MXT(?) format, which looked like a regular movie screen to me, and it was great! I'd seen other reviews from folks who saw it in IMAX and they mentioned its not as good as a 'regular' screen since IMAX tends to favor brighter-looking and colorful movies. Anyway, AWESOME MOVIE! I hadn't been to a theater since 2015 due to all the repetitive franchise crap being put out by the USA studios. At least the Japanese movie makers still know how to make a good, engaging movie.

For me it was about redemption. All the men fought a war that their government told them they had to fight, only for the war and all the loss to mean absolutely nothing. And added to that, their government had abandoned them in their return and couldn't even muster a response to the arrival of the monster Godzilla. That is why it had to be a group of citizen volunteers. Finally it was their choice, their real actual choice, to protect their country and risk their lives for something that would matter and redeem them. Regardless of the outcome.

I saw Godzilla Minus One in IMAX and was blown away. Even as a lifelong Godzilla fan, I think Minus One is my favorite Godzilla movie. Everything about it was amazing, especially the acting. The movie never pushed too hard in one direction (action, drama, comedy, horror) and struck an excellent balance by making Godzilla's screen time more meaningful rather than longer. I never thought I'd be saying that a Godzilla movie covers difficult topics more deeply than anything I've seen in years, and in the case of Japanese soldiers of WW2, ever. If it's still in theaters, because of the limited release, I'm going to watch it again.

So many lovable characters and arcs that will make you feel every single emotion. My absolute favorite part of this movie is that it actually respects the audience and doesn't spell everything out for them like most moden Hollywood movies. As a long time Godzilla fan, I can certainly say that the franchise has always been about celebrating people and focusing on relationships of the characters in the movies. Minus One really is simply carrying on that tradition with some of the most well written characters in the series. But, Godzilla is also a franchise that has had its fair share of crazy, wacky, and silly moments filled with monster action, Godzilla flying, talking, dancing etc. So, the Monsterverse films turning into big budget versions of the old Showa movies isn’t inherently a negative thing at all, in my view. Godzilla is one of the only franchises that can be both a serious, grounded, and thought provoking introspection, and also a crazy monster action-filled romp. That’s why it’s stood the test of time now for 69 years; Godzilla is incredibly malleable. I’m glad that we have both an absolute tour de force of filmmaking excellence with Minus One, and Shin Godzilla back in 2016, and also super fun movies that see Godzilla fighting other monsters, saving the planet, and running alongside Kong. It’s just a wonderful time to be a Godzilla fan.

If this film was made specifically for Kaiju fans, we could have just as easily gotten another Godzilla vs. Kong, a big monster romp that offers nothing but dumb fun to pass two hours of your time. Instead, this movie went above and beyond to make the audience connect with its narrative by touching on themes that are universally human. It takes a big swing by committing to making a true genre film out of a Godzilla story in the same way that Christopher Nolan took a swing with Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy and elevated the character's appeal beyond just being for comic book fans.

Something good Men can understand. Brotherhood, fear, selflessness, duty, strength in the face of certain death, bonds to family and friends. The women in this movie were amazing too! Equally selfless, dutiful, self sacrificial. Glorious story telling and story arcs galore. All great messaging our young men and women need to see more of. Cheers.

A lot of times it seems like people think gender representation is a zero-sum game. If you show strong women it means you can only do it when contrasted against weak men and vice versa. This movie - in addition to just being plain awesome for many of the points you mentioned - showed that you can really have your cake and eat it too. Even though the emotional thrust of the story happens to center around brave, self-sacrificing, cooperative and protective men finding solidarity in one another, in their duty and their families, it didn't need to do so by making the female characters push-over nuisances or plot fodder. Noriko is heroic, motivated and nurturing in her own right and the older woman who is Shikishima's neighbor also shows incredible resilience and maternal strength in her own right. The movie was about the low-key virtues of the Japanese people rising up to face a major threat and it really goes to show how those virtues can be reflected from the soldiers to the sailors to the widows and everyone in between.

I love that Godzilla is not inclined to be evil or good. It just is. Much like torrential rains or storms aren't evil, but they'll end you just the same. Finally, we see it for what it is. A force of nature, humbling the hubris of our species.

He is evil here though. This argument about not being good or evil could be made for the first movie in 1954, but here he looks like his intelligence grows quickly and he just hates humans. In the sequel he will probably be smarter too. I think they will eventually make him smarter than humans.

My best friend and I saw this movie on Saturday and it was fantastic, the characters are interesting, that struggle and against all odds they triumph. Plus I love that they treat Godzilla as this unstoppable force, a force of nature and not like how Hollywood treats Godzilla. It remains true to the original 1954 movie so it earns an extra point for staying faithful to the original. I think this movie is going to grow a large audience over time.

What I appreciate about Minus One is it brings back old ideas from past Godzilla films and makes them fresh and new again, even to the point of actually SHOWING US what in the past was only ever implied or explained through dialogue (seeing Godzilla getting caught in the middle of the H-bomb tests and getting horribly burned and mutated especially comes to mind).

The only problem that I had with this film was that I couldn't find it in an IMAX or Dolby theatre in my area. Other than that, I loved it. It was a good story. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe do fantastic jobs. I felt for both, and hoped that they'd succeed as a makeshift family struggling through post-war life in Japan. And of course the big G was awesome. The monster looked amazing. You really felt it was godlike in its monstrous destructive capability. Great monster and very good characters all wrapped up in a good story. This is a must see for sure. This is potentially the best Godzilla that I've ever seen.

Yeah, it was very under the radar, I think. Probably due to being a foreign film with no dubbing, so theatres and such didn't make a big effort to put it out there. They also probably didn't have much of a budget for advertising. I only knew about it because I happened upon a youtube trailer after I had already been looking at kaiju movie clips.

Seeing this movie really put the complete and utter collapse of Hollywood into perspective. Its nothing less than ART made by talented people that genuinely care. No overbloated budgets. No mindnumbing CGI clusterf**ks consuming everything on the screen. No cynicism. No agenda pushing. No modern day partisan politics. And most of all respect for the audience. There's a depth to Godzilla Minus 1 that i havent seen in a hollywood movie in years.

Godzilla is a pop culture icon as well as a cinema legend that has entertained the masses for nearly 70 years and he returned to show Hollywood how it is done and the Big-G cleared the way for the Boy and the Heron to come in to take the lead in the rankings(G:M1 and TBATH are two Japanese films and they are taking the entertainment business by storm and I can say that Japan has finished out 2023 as top dog in the entertainment sector) and the human characters actually had meaning then just being cannon fodder. PS: I was still on Godzilla's side the whole time even tho I cared about the human characters.

I never thought I'd see the day that a GODZILLA movie could actually be a contender for best movie of the year, but hey, I guess that's what damn near 70 years of experience, wins and flops, and writers, actors and artists wirh drive and ambition will so to a franchise. For once, I DREADED every time Godzilla was on screen, because I was worried about "Who's going to die? Will they all make it??" I actually wanted Godzilla to be stopped, instead of wanting him to destroy everything. I won't spoil anything, but there were some INSANELY well done emotional moments that actually made me and my friend tear up while watching, and we never get emotional. Never thought a Godzilla movie would do that to me. If you haven't seen this film on the big screen, go see it. It's worth the ticket prices for a change.
