@@IVY-jr7io That's quite true and it's very sad. I've seen people show disappointment for whatever they've heard is in their lineage and I would simply be happy to know more. They get a gift and undervalue it.

Interestingly, my spouse was always told that they had an "Indian" ancestor with obvious indications they meant that the woman in question was Native American. Well, we did a DNA test and it turns out she was Indian, Punjabi to be specific. They had the wrong meaning of the old term, but family refuses to accept the results and insist that she was Native American, even some family that met her long ago. I have strong suspicions of why they won't accept it and none of them are flattering.

My mom took a test to find out whether there was native American ancestry in her family. When the results arrived, they were negative for native American but positive for a small percentage of Samoan. I'm guessing there must be a sailor somewhere in the family tree in order for that to be there. Most of her family has European roots, so that one caught all of us by surprise.

@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 8 месяцев назад
This is a great observation, Claudine. Indeed, our DNA results can sometimes be at odds with family history that is passed down to us. It's important to bear in mind that even with a perfect knowledge of the history of your ancestors, DNA can still show some unexpected results. We each inherit 50% of our DNA from both our mother and father but exactly what 50% we inherit is random. This is known as genetic recombination and can cause unexpected DNA results for many members who do not inherit a region that they know their parent(s) has. Please see the article we've linked here which delves into inheritance and how it works: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Understanding-Inheritance?language=en_US. Remember that your DNA is only one element of a much larger picture, and your family history and relatives will play an important role in your genetic make-up, even if they are not specifically reflected in your ethnicity results. Check out the linked here for more information on the factors that can caused unexpected results: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Unexpected-Ethnicity-Results. We hope this article helps!

They don`t look Scandinavian at all. You see, american people... we are all just one big blend that has evolved from tribes emigrating all over, blending with other tribes creating new tribes. Etc etc.. There is not several "races". There are only difference in background, appearances, cultures and characters. ONE RACE. You really should do it, it's very easy now because you can find most records online. When I started mine, back in 1970, you had to spend a lot of time driving from town to town and visiting court houses and libraries and historical societies, and spending hours and hours scouring through old records, and maybe make several trips to each one to find the things we were looking for. And the DNA tests will give you lots of leads and clues. I will warn you, though, most of the people who match your DNA will not communicate with you, but just going thru their online trees and their other matches is a big help.

For those who don’t get why Gayle had that reaction: for people of color, in this case a black person who is descended from enslaved black people, that white percentage isn’t just fun trivia it holds a lot of historical trauma. It brings up a lot of complicated emotions. Her ancestor could’ve been raped while in bondage, is she supposed to celebrate that? If it’s more recent then that may not be the case but there’s more processing of that info that we go through than our white peers. It’s all fun for you when you find out your part whatever because you don’t have the weight of your ancestors being oppressed, enslaved and dehumanized. The context of how that dna got there is different for you. Have a bit more compassion and try to look at things from outside of your perspective rather than making judgmental assumptions.

That's exactly the issue. There's no 100% sure way of testing these things, and it won't ever be completely accurate. All DNA tests have different libraries to base their results on, and therefore the percentages will be different depending on which one you get.

@@thespankmyfrank Yeah, how long have we been collecting those libraries? They are very young data sets, I would have to imagine, as we only recently had the capabilities to reliably collect DNA. To my layman eyes, it seems all we can do is find people who are most similar, which isn't that affirming of the idea of race?
