I never understood why this bit and others always got introduced as "new segments", when anyone watching was very likely to know they're long running bits. It's not like you need it to be new for the premise to work.
Because it's funnier and feeds into the phony "backstory" for the bit. And it doesn't leave anyone feeling like they're not in on the joke, since it's a "brand new segment!" When you'd see these recurring sketches every few weeks or months or even years, the repetition wouldn't bother you like if you're binging them on RU-vid. Also, the illusion did work to an extent. Very few people saw every episode, nor were you expected to, so the first time you saw a specific bit felt like the first time that bit was done. You wouldn't think to question if they had done it 2 months prior in an episode you missed.
