Mabey when Celestia said "I saw the signs of Nightmare Moon's return" she meant that she saw the mane 6 on how they're the representations on the elements and how they could reform Nightmare moon so she willingly freed her sister.
The thing is Lauren Fause wrote that first episode, so those words were written in context of Lauran’s idea that Celestial set her free. So yeah she did set them free
Nobody ever asks why when nightmare moon was defeated in season 1, princess Luna came back as a younger looking version with non flowing mane. However in the season 4, when twilight drank the potion from zecora, we saw the backstory of she turned to nightmare moon, she already had flowing mane. Was this an animation error or something deeper?
No Luna was normal. After she became nightmare moon celestia banishes her in the moon causing luna's death as her memory her evil prints on the moon after 1000 years she was free from the curse and was reborn back as her old version having low power she couldn't control the moon after she became nice all her nice powers go into her and she got back her flowing mane and she became normal.
Technically, the sun is a star, so it woukf make sense if Celestia could control them, buut.. stars are also rekated to the *night*, and who's the Princess of The Night? Luna, maybe some of her "night magic" helped aid in her escape?
About how Luna was released, I thought like, when Luna was banished in the moon, it was similar to a spell. And, there is a history of spells having a time limit, like in “A Royal Problem”. In this episode, Starlight mentions how the spell lasts for 24 hours. So, when the elements of harmony were cast upon Nightmare Moon, there might have been a similar type of time limit. So, at that specific time, the spell would have worn off and released Nightmare Moon from her imprisonment.
I like the idea that it is Harmony (I'm naming her as her own sentient entity, not just "the tree" as we are shown in seasons 8 and 9 where the tree has grown beyond just a tree). One FIM fiction I've been procrastinating on involves Celestia's visions, and how divination is an imprecise ability and later how Luna is more precise as a clairvoyant. Though more firmly rooted in reality than say Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter, Celestia still has to account for free will and life not being scripted, and thus cannot be precise in her visions. This is why I like your idea that Harmony is the one who allowed Nightmare Moon to be freed, and why Celestia could no longer bear the elements. I also think that is why Harmony choose the form of Twilight as an avatar, as she best embodied what Harmony was trying to achieve. I think twilight controls the stars,as she didnt know that her cutie mark does not just Resembles the element of magic but also represent the night sky’s stars. That means She’s the star alicorn AKA maibe luna’s stepdaughter.

Ok so this is probably will be wrong but the tweet said "who controls rhe sun and the moon and the stars". Celestia only controls the sun and Luna only controls the moon but do you know who controls the sun and the moon? STARSWIRL. So, maybe once he saw that Luna had been bannished, he wrote a spell to free her in a thousand years. Maybe he also changed the profacy since he did dabble in time travle so maybe he went back to when the profacy was wrote and changed it to fit what would happen. Idk i just thought of this :) Edit: so it is a thing that twilight can do spells by reading them out and didnt she say that "on the longest day of the thousand year the stars will aid in her escape" and just after she said that the stars freed nightmare moon? Maybe twilight used her magic to accidentally free her?
I don't think Starswirl cast the spell, he sacrificed himself to stop the pony of shadows before luna turned into a nightmare moon. I don't think he did it in time travel. Twilight say time travel a spell that would surpass even for him, and Time travel was one of those spells he couldn't complete. Until starlight use to the map of the friendship castle
i check on the internet who controls the stars and it said "shifting star controls the star" so who is she and why did she help nightmare moon in her escape?
I love Tree of Harmony ,especially its charactisation in seasons 8 and 9. It is the spider from elder flower's story in my theory. And the reason why i cant accept G5 as same universe continuation of G4. Tree would literally save all before Twilight even thinks of some idiotic crystals
After princess celestia banished nightmare moon she took over responsibility of sun and moon and in a song she said I will do the stars tonight so she can move the stars
So on my thinking it wasn't celestial or the tree of harmony it was an accident because there's like over 1000 stars in the sky so some stars may have went to nightmare moon And freed her•
Reading all of these comments lead me to that i think that luna "controlled" the stars when she was becoming nightmare moon,what i mean is that luna does control the stars but its not really necessary so she only did to become nightmare moon,but since nightmare moon is trapped in the moon if the mane six defeat nightmare moon she would turn into luna so,if luna really learned her lesson nightmare moon wouldn't have ever get out again.
I think it was Celestia. Think about it, if the stars become too dull to see in the day why would Celestia need to move them? And the sun is a star just much more further away. Though in mlp I bet it's closer just very small

I don’t think it would be Celestia because in the other timeline when the sonic rainbom didn’t happen then none of the main 6 will have gotten their cutie marks, which wouldn’t allow them to get the elements of harmony if Celestia was the one to release, nightmare, moon why would she release villain when she knows there’s no one to protect Equestria because she didn’t do anything to help with nightmare moon

Look at twilight's cutie Mark it's a star! That wouldn't been very likely that twilight did it but in one of your videos you tell us that Starswirl the bearded made celestia and luna alicorns and his name is STAR swirl so it does make sense that he wanted luna back so I think that it might be him
You're forgetting another pony named with star, Starlight Glimmer, she was powerful enough to steal marks from ponies which showed their special talent, and travel through time (even if she wasn't the one who wrote the spell to do it)
