I tried these fish multiple times, and I couldn't get them to work for me. I tried Dan's CPDS, and they were great, and I had absolutely no problems. If you are nervous, definitely try Dan's Fish.

I just found your channel and as I new Aquarist and general biology nerd I love the style of these videos and the amount of research and background provided rather than the typical “yeah throw these guys in pH 7-8 @ 76 degrees in a 10 gallon.” Plus you actually get footage of the fish rather than just your face! Good vid, I love these little guys. I have about 20+ adults and some 15+ fry, that I know about, might be more. When kept in larger groups (20+,50+ is amazing), they eat food direcly from your hand. They are without any doubt my favourite nano fish.

I ordered a bunch of CPDs from what appeared to be a US breeder, but were, in fact, shipped from Asia and were extremly emaciated and pretty close to a pale white when I received them. Thankfully, by some miracle, 11 out of the 12 I bought recovered nicely and now they seem to be quite happy in my planted tank (and they spend much of their time where I can see them). I wish I found out about you sooner, but if I ever need to order some more CPDs, I will order them from you!

Shy? Lol. My celestial pearls that arrived yesterday are super curious, right at the front of the tank, and quite bold. They've been schooling with the ember tetras, some of the chili rasboras, and are unafraid of the two female bettas. The danios are only just over half and inch, too. When I fed everybody this morning, the danios were active feeders and I know for sure they all ate.

Exactly ! If you feed less and more often every fish will become your BFF. I have a bunch of female guppys who come to rub against my fingers like cats do, I kindly call them "my bunch of hoes". If I wanted or needed to I could catch most of them by hand. Now my platys have gotten into it too. I can see that the other kinds of fish are coming closer and closer to me. I know I shouldn't put my hands in the aquarium but it is so cute I can't restrain myself 🤦

just started collecting eggs yesterday! I have a cold tank of 18 with 3 female clown killifish and 1 male clown killi that I have tried so hard to breed but only had 1 successful fry (that later died in a surface skimmer I forgot to turn off and left on for too long rip) - I do have 3 mystery fry that I'm raising up from that cold tank so they're either pygmy corys, CPDs, or clown killis. I'm really hoping they're clowns.

My shrimp breeder sent me home with a school of these guys and I love them! I have 12 and I'd love to get more in the future :) What would you recommend as dither fish to help the CPDs feel safe? They're with plants and blue velvets right now.
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 месяцев назад
Anything small, peaceful, and bold, but not too food aggressive would work well. Pygmy Hatchetfish, Pencilfish, Pygmy Corys, Kubotai Rasboras, Chili Rasboras, or more CPDs should do the trick.
@mr.octopus6972

I had 5 of these (now 4 because one is dead of unknown reasons) they live in a comunity tank with guppy, platy, danio emerald, cory and black neon. Shy is not the word I would choose to explain their behavior, cautious would be a better choice of words. At first they where hiding a lot but since they learned (probably from watching the other fish) that the big air breathing giant is dropping food all the time. They became very sociable toward humans and don't fear me no more. If they look uneased maybe you should change the water parameters, they need an acidic environment to start thinking about having babies. A good way to do this is by adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and it is also good for their health. Stunning fish to watch from close and seeing them courting and mating is a show😮😮
@DansFish

Just got them. I love how they look like tiny trout. Do you know of any other fish that has solid colored scales and nice colors like this one? White Cloud Mountain Minnows is on my list, but i would love more suggestions. Mine are not shy at all, but they are very vigilant as you have mentioned in the video. I housed them with one of my bettas, and they get right up to each other. I think their confidence comes from that i got a slightly denser population that what is typically recommended online and because i have a lot of plants and hardscape to break up the sight lines. They have available cover pretty much anywhere they can go, and often bicker among each other about the best spots. When they have confidence, they also become very inquisitive and will come right up to the glass to inspect me when i am watching the tank. I can also tend to the tank without worrying about them getting stressed. If anyone who wants to get CPDs are reading this, my tips is this: Drip acclimation for minimum 1 hour. Lots of plants, they will not thrive without them. Floating plant especially, they do not like seeing the light source but do not mind bright light in itself as long as they do not see where its coming from.
@DansFish
@DansFish 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing your experience with these fish. I think White Clouds could work as long as you don't get too many of them...White Clouds are fast eaters and tend to hog the food. I'd also look at Neon Green Kubotai Rasboras and other small, peaceful rasboras as they tend to be less food aggressive.
@TheRealEvilSink
@TheRealEvilSink 8 месяцев назад
@@DansFish Thank you for taking time to answer me. I will definitely be mindful of that with white clouds if i end up getting them. i thankfully have space to move fish around if needed :) Do Rasboras nip at fins of other fish? I have a super docile betta that would not defend itself even if it needed to. He is a bit depressed after i had to take his corydoras tankmates out. I raised the fry from eggs in his tank and he never did anything but inspect them once in a while. I am in need of something to keep him company as i cant spend enough time with him to fulfill his social wants/needs, i have other bettas that also needs stimuli.

To give you an idea how hardy they are I live in the mountains of western Montana at 4200'. I turned 25 of these guys loose in a 300 gallon stock tank out in my garden in May with nothing but an aerator and pond plants. Pulled them out last weekend for the winter and found 21 of them fat and happy and guessing I lost most the other 4 to a fat and happy dragonfly nymph I also found. They are now in an unheated 65 gal aquarium in my livingroom with paradise fish for the winter.
@joppek77
@joppek77 9 месяцев назад
That's very interesting! Do you think they make good tank mates to Paradise fish? Paradise fish can be a bit aggressive, or so I've heard...
@sheridanshumway6820
@sheridanshumway6820 9 месяцев назад
@joppek77 so far no problem. CPDs are small, fast and never stop moving. The opercularis don't pay them much attention.
@sheridanshumway6820
@sheridanshumway6820 9 месяцев назад
@@joppek77 3 things that I think make it work: large tank, large group of CPDs so they are out in the open and not being cornered and the opercularis are a group of 2.3 so if they are being grumpy they tend to argue with each other.
@joppek77
@joppek77 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the info! Yea I figure a fast schooling fish could work as tank mates to M opercularis. The obvious choice would be White Clouds but CPDs would be very attractive! Thinking to keep them in a 50 gal with lots of plants.

@sheridanshumway6820 9 месяцев назад

I’m curious if they would be suitable for a UNS 60s? Footprint is bigger, but it’s only 7 inches of height. 23 x 14 x 7 10 gallon shallow. My first shallow and struggling on what fish to get. Also thought about Scarlet Badis. Thoughts Dan?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 месяцев назад
For most fish, height is much less important than floor space...they swim side-to-side much more often than up-and-down. I think that tank footprint would be great for CPDs and Scarlet Badis. Tough choice...they are bot such beautiful fish! The advantage to CPDs is they will eat prepared foods much more readily than Scarlet Badis, which prefer frozen and live foods.
@Nateorade_
@Nateorade_ 5 месяцев назад
@@DansFishI’m actually going to go a different route than the Badis. I have a Fluval 307 on this tank so significantly over filtered haha. Do you think 6 CPD, 6 Chili Rasboras and 6 Pygmy cats would be appropriate?
