Celestron will release the Celestron Origin Intelligent Home Observatory (smart telescope) to the market in 2014 for a mere $3999. After having reviewed other telescopes, I'm eager to share my thoughts with you. Will this be a hot product and will people pay $3999 for this premium smart telescope? Let me know what you think!

Another great preview, thank you! The fast RASA optics on this are appealing. But for 4,000, I’ll hold out until they put it on an equatorial mount. Also, the 178 was my first camera, used for planetary, and even then I found it quite noisy. So, I’ll stick with my Seestar and real Redcat 71/AM5 and SCT 9.25” rigs for now. Still, I’m glad to see this development, as it shows the “smart telescope” competition heating up!

There was a good point about the elderly. I'm nearly 73 and can't lift much. Also I'm not likely to travel to dark sky sites. My recently acquired vespera 2 works well for me (except their tripod sucks. Using the s50 tripod for the vespera).

I too would buy the OTA and attach it to my Skywatcher EQ mount. I unfortunately bought the StarAid system just before it`s inventor sold out to Celestron!

As a current Evolution mount owner my main concearn with the Origin would be have Celestron improved the Wifi ability of the Evolution mount?? The wifi on my Evo mount is terrible, it locks up on the mount so you then loose connection and cant reconnect until you power cycle the mount. so, if Wifi is the only way of connecting to the Origin then this would be one of my major concears, Celestron dont have a very good track record of Stable wifi, its not just me whos had issues.

I am living in The Hague and have a rooftop like yours. Every 3 months I do go to Chile and want to carry my smart telescope with me. I do not have a budget constraint. I am in between dwarf and seestar but kind of want to go a bit higher end but I do not see vespera or uni stellar actually worths it as the outcome of the images are not so different than seestar for instance. Do you think should I wait the Celestron or should I go with dwarf or seestar?

I'm entering the Astrophotograhy game REAL late in the game, and am interested in getting final results ASAP for a personal project, and learning all the post processing as I go. It seems to me that the Origin will give a about the same size image of the object (FOV) as the S50, but will be higher resolution and will finish quicker - is that a fair statement? I'm handy with data and image processing in non-astronomical context, so would assume the FIT files would be a great playground to learn the "nerd" stuff, but from an instant gratification standpoint for a limited window of learning, this seems to be a pretty good solution (price being another discussion). Thoughts?

Thanks for sharing your feedback. I had the same reaction to the photos on the Celestron website. I wasn't impressed given its cost.

No! The focal length is too short. You'd better het an sct with at minimum 8" and 2000mm FL. Cheers.

Thanks for your info. I’ve been trying to get into astrophotography and these type of smart scopes might help me without making things too complicated therefore making it fun and possibly inexpensive. Not necessarily this $4000 model. I might consider one of the $500 models for the fun of it but I’m not too sold on the small FOV. I have an 8” scope, xt8. I’ve tried to use an older dslr I have but have discovered the focuser won’t go in far enough. I received my svbony 305c camera and have discovered just how fast the moon travels across my FOV since I don’t have a tracking system. I haven’t tried the 305 on a planet yet but considering the hard time I had finding the moon, I think I might have a hard time finding something a lot smaller. I have been excited by a couple Nebulas I’ve seen, so I have enjoyed my telescope. As a newbie, I’ve talked to another astrophotographer newbie who has spent over $6000 on his equipment in the last year. I don’t think my wife would like me spending $4000 on this model and a 5 year old sensor I don’t think I’d like to spend my money on it.

Tx for sharing. As you already own a xt8 and 305c I kindly advise you to consider a motorized equatorial tracking mount. It'll help considerably to track objects in the sky. For 4000 they need to add cooling or an actual eq mount, also has a old sensor I’m pretty sure. This is bull

I wonder if it will accept a Nexstar wedge With a zenith position point it at Polaris and you are done.

Wedge and autoguiding are on the future implementation list of the Celestron Origin.

I have a celestron 150 goto sct, obviously its not really good for deep space but excellent for planets. To compliment my enjoyment of the night sky i recently brought the Dwarf 11 Deluxe for £512 and I'm super happy with it. Some of my eye pieces cost nearly as much and i think the Dwarf 11 captures images very well. No it won't compete with a £12.000 astro set up but it does a great job for some who does not want to spend £0000s. I would like to see a full review of this expensive smart telescope when people like your self can try it out , seems expensive at the moment compared to other smart scopes that produce reasonable images for a lot less money. really like your channel .

Thanks Wido. The only thing good is its a rasa. Everything else, bad. Smart scopes are in my opinion something a beginner, not wanting to invest much will get to try and maybe progress in the hobby to more refined equipment. Don't know what they were thinking.

I appreciate that Perry, but I think you forget about elderly who can't carry a heavy rig, physically disabled, people with an interest for the night sky without the time to learn astrophotography, and even more experienced astrophotographers like me who have max. 1 to 3 hour clear skies in wintertime and still want a quick gaze at the night sky. That being said, the price of the origin is quite high, probably due to the investments made to automate this telescope. I have worked on developing several APPs myself and it can be quite costly.

Eyeballing smart telescope for a while now....waiting for the Vaonis Vespera Pro I think....I live quite close...let's do a " non-astronerd tries astrophotography for the 1st time" when you get the Vespera II

Might be a good thing that the results are not that gr8. So the average joe don't get too high expectations. Any astrophotographer will probably outdo these result very easy with the same equipment. Guess time will tell but i'm confident there's much more to be had with this.

Too slow for my purposes (EAA). I managed a very decent Horsehead with an 80mm refractor at F3 in 300 seconds with a Mallincam DS10c. I like the concept of an all-in-one package but with my larger setup (Edge 9.25 on an AZ EQ6) I can capture acceptable images in a fraction of the time and at a slightly higher price point. My old school setup is much better for outreach.

Is the Mallincam DS10c a reducer? Or a camera? I have a MallinCam 0.5 Reducer (MallinCam MFR-10, 2" Large Format Focal Reducer) and a ZWO 585mc camera.......they work very well with my newtonian. I'll try it with a refractor too as you said it works well

@@ziggyfrnds It’s a 10 megapixel camera. And it’s highly sensitive when set to 2x2 binning. I also have a similar reducer to yours - Mallincam Universe .5 reducer. The mallincams were initially intended to grab images in a very short time, which they still do, but many are using them for straight up astrophotography now.

When considering buying a telescope, is an F2 telescope twice as fast as an F4? Or is it actually four times faster as it would be in camera optical terminology? Thanks so much

On any optical system, the f-number is defined as the aperture (technically: entrance pupil) diameter divided by the focal length. This definition does not change if you are talking camera lens or telescope or any other optical system. So an f/2 system is two stops faster than f/4. That means if you get a f/2 scope, you can get the same exposure in 1/4 the time needed with a f/4 scope, with all other factors (focal length, sensor, etc.) being equal.

Exactly! Or even the relatively cheaper 585 because those are awesome. In fact I wish there was some way to swap out the ZWO seestar's 462 with the 585

@@ziggyfrnds yep the 585 looks like a good chip I just really like the square form factor on the 533 and it’s ideal for an alt as scope. Agree on the seestar entirely- very happy with its base performance but would just like a little more… 🤭

The NexStar 6SE costs €1500, Camera with adapter roughly €500. Either the quality must be superb, or that is a really, really expensive app. A €2000 increase in price over a 6SE seems like a rip-off, even for non astro-nerds.

Just… If you are only « interested in the night sky » and not an « astro-nerd », you won’t pay 3999 DOLLARS just to take some pictures and say : mmm pretty butiful. I think the price is just too high. For 3999$, there should be AT LEAST a cooled camera !! For this price you can have a full REAL astro gear with that would give awesome results.

All the criticism over the price is easily debunked, because many of those arguments leave something out: automation. Automation in the astrophotography market is key. All of us seasoned amateur astrophotographers know this. If we go out and purchase an astrophotography accessory it will be associated with some type of automation. Basically, we're about to see a deluge of RASA images captured by greenhorns. They will have paid for that convenience of turnkey automation in astrophotography, because without this automation they wouldn't never delve into astronomy or astrophotography. I welcome them, but am not looking forward to the social media astro overload. Millions and millions of similar images of M45 and M42. Brace yourselves. 🤣

Good point. But i do like to add that all who complain also have automated their rigs with asiair, nina, sgpro, autoguiding, autofocus etc....or even build whole observatories... Pics can be downloaded and processed all the same so we will see variations in output.
