Celine Dion - Tribute to Aretha Franklin (2019) #CelineDion Sings '' A Change Is Gona Come'' at the Aretha! A Grammy Celebration Special. Follow #Divas on / divasofficiial #ArethaFranklin #ArethaFranklinTribute
This proves why this woman is in The Vocal Trinity. She's didn't grow up in the black church but she tapped into some real soul singing here. Aretha would be proud.
51, lost her husband and brother two days apart, came back from a whole year of concerts every single day in Vegas, and still... she sings this like a champ!
This song is so personal for my people! She did it justice! I think she's speaking from her own struggles! OUTSTANDING Celine! You put your soul in it & we felt it!!
So often, it is our shared pain which unites us. Have you noticed that it's usually those ppl who haven't had to struggle that are the ones that lack empathy? There are exceptions to every rule, but: It's often the rich ...who are greedy, the healthy...who lack compassion for the sick, the privileged ...who don't want to hear the "excuses" of the oppressed. There's an old proverb: *There is wisdom in the house of sorrow* The "change that's gonna to come" is a change of our hearts and minds.
Celine will forever be one of the greatest vocalist in history. No one can ever replicate the power and magic of her voice. Main pop girls of today can never touch the power of Celine Dion. To sing a difficult song with passion, soul and power is a feat that legendary vocalists can only do!
Louis-Henri BAILLET Amen. Everytime I watch this and this is like my 15th time at least and I cry each time. Celine put so much emotion and empathy into this performance. The images on the screen added to the performance but her voice shined the most.
Note for note, riff for riff Celine nailed as Her Majesty would have. It’s obvious she studied the original recording not just for this performance, but from it being a favorite of hers! Bravo!
Never forget and you can verify, Ms. Aretha Franklin requested Celine Dion sing at her tribute. Unfortunately The Queen of Soul passed away before the broadcast. Ms. Aretha also covered some of Celine’s songs on live performances. They had respect for one another. Keep it real!
Those are the facts. These shows take up to a few years to put together. Figure it out. The time span between Aretha's passing and the tribute date. It would have been impossible.
I had to go and listen to Aretha’s version of this song to understand Celine’s. All I can say is WOW. She NAILED this. Her vocal talent is incredible. Aretha would’ve loved this ❤️ 👌🏻
@@CountryCowboy008 Really? Did U have to mention Mariah Carey? why? What is Ur hatred against her? Do not tell me U're one of the people who like to compare singers. I tell U something...? Each singer is unique and unrepeatable, thank God Mariah Carey still earns a lot of money with her majestic voice, Céline Dion with her impeccable voice also does it, Barbra Streisand the same, Patti LaBelle and Lisa Stansfield also and each of them is unique, different and all are highly acclaimed by the public and no matter who sings better or worse than the other, the comparisons are stupid. IMHO!🤷🏻♂️
You can really tell how amazing Celine and her voice bc she s the only 90’s Diva who paid tribute to her great fellow Divas like Whitney and Aretha . I dont think the other one who s part of the vocal trinity who kept on shading Celine can do a tribute to the late two divas .
Celine Dion is one singer who respects all artists especially "Aretha Franklin" and a great admirer of "Whitney Houston" when she sang at the Grammy's she was in the back looking at the TV monitor as an astonished child looking at Whitney which was amazing in her singing at that moment. Everyone there was also watching Celine watching Whitney was amazed that this singer loved Whitney for her style and incredible vocals.
remember how celine stepped forward during the divas live show in 1998 and competed as the only one against aretha, and aretha respected her and said "good girl of mine". it became full circle now as she is the only one of the 90s divas that still could pay an appropriate tribute to the queen of soul.
@@jojomonroe3754 Yes Mariah is alive and VERY well manifesting herself with the most recent records in 2019. But I said paying tribute to Aretha. And frankly, I don't believe Mariah could still belt out "a change is gonna come" in the fashion Celine did. It takes a lot of guts to sing that, just as stepping forward and competing with Aretha.
Oliver Mariah can’t BELT. She could in her prime she can’t any longer. And actually Celine’s voice isn’t as fluid or as supported I. Her belts as in her prime. People age, voices change.
she uses the same key as aretha at 30 years old .lol. but above all she uses a strong tone, she sings very loud from start to finish .. crazy high tone ... at 52 years old ..... she could have sung softer with less force .. but her voice is 52 years old. lets sing that again .. that broken voice makes for an emotional style. the notes are not all clean but it is related to the volume of his voice. she lowers the volume a little, her voice will be clean and the notes clearer. this a style ....I love Celine when she sings loudly like here while remaining on her crazy chest. her highs are tense and broken at certain times .. but she stays in the highs ... this is impressive at 50 years old ... yes she uses her mask (nose) .. but it allows her to sing fast and powerful at 50 years old. .this adds a piercing dimension. but also an enormous speed ... that not many singer have at this age ....
It even unnecessary to pinpoint about she did well or not in her singing because at this point of her career, she is probably one of the biggest influential vocalists of contemporary music. She has nothing to prove anymore but she keeps on slaying and giving. As you said, she's beyond 50 and still enjoying her amazing gift with resonance, range, and agility that most of her peers lost before even reaching 40 years old. Just enjoy and be thankful that she's here with us, still making music.
@@danielmilheiro4673 She's a talent, no doubt about that. But she's really mean and has a very questionable attitude towards other singers. Whitney and Celine both have the class that Mariah doesn't have. Besides Whitney, only Celine gets this kind of respect from the audience- people standing up and giving them flowers everytime they step out of the stage.
@@danielmilheiro4673 "now waaaiiit a minute bitch this aint phadrea"....Mariah is on the same pedestal frien. The fact is there's so many great singers but the world will never talk about the singer with the greatest range and it not be Mariah, sorry if that first comment seemed shady .
@@sassygyrl She tried to do a live vocal copy of Aretha's studio recording of this song...so it's basically an attempted imitation. Only makes me want to listen to Aretha sing it. Celine sounds so strained it's painful. Instead of trying to reproduce Aretha's vocal performance, maybe she should have had her arrangers work the song around HER current vocal abilities.
If you had told me, beforehand, that Celine Dion was going to sing A Change Is Going To Come, I would have frowned and maybe even scoffed at the very idea. I would have been proven wrong after this performance. Every blue moon you capture that essence of that THING that draws the audience in and keeps them on the edge of their seats. Celine did that. She was amazing, and it was exactly the way Aretha did it. I believe Aretha and Sam Cooke would have been honored by this performance.
I expected to be disappointed by this, having such a affection for the Otis version - it can be a mournful or uplifting song, but I had chills from the first few bars. They'll only ever be one Aretha. And one Celine.
Celine showcased her soul in 2004 for a tribute to Luther Vandross with singing the song "Dance with my Father" with no ear piece to hear herself. She sang that song with love and soul.
OMG You don't see Céline like that very often. GIving it her all, all the way through. The audience looked pretty impressed too. And remember it's not her first language!!!!
I disagree I don’t feel as though she gave it her all. But she did sing it very well in my opinion now as for the ending she took us all to church it’s refreshing that she sung the song Celine is an amazing woman period and when she opens her mouth you freakin know she came to slay. She really controlled her voice here extremely because any other time she would’ve been up there I’m range and notes. But that’s alright she did great she made this version her very own
To Leaves yeah she’s born in a French speaking town. She speaks French at home and with her kids. You should check out her French materials too, they’re much better than that of English.
idk i just like her from a very young age until now shes still the best of the best...WHAT A LEGEND QUEEN OF POWER BALLADS....my respect to all divas left but Celine will alweiz be my favourite female singers in the world..iLysm Celine Dion!
Celine has done an amazing job in singing tributes to America's greatest Divas like Aretha and Whitney. Only Celine can give them justice by singing in Celine Dion way.
Whitney and Mariah sing with full of emotions but Celine sings with tons of soul! I can cry hearing Celine sing which I haven't felt with Whitney and Mariah. Though I am a big fan of the two. 😊
21 years ago, the Queen of Soul asked Celine to sing "HIGHER" at 1998 Divas Live. Celine was being extremely "DISRESPECTFUL" (quoted from someone saying that numerous times) to sing the same key to the Queen. 21 years later, the Queen personally invited Celine to pay tribute for her and Celine was finally singing a "HIGHER" note (G#5) at the end of the song with her own riffs and runs to show "RESPECT" to the Queen.
I came to this video after watching a video of Mme Dion at her husband’s funeral in Montreal. It made me reflect on her childhood, youngest of 12 in working class Québec family. She married her manager, the love of her life, raised three sons with him, and then she lost him. And then she does this. “Change” can mean hope to those who are suffering. I am wowed by the power she gives that message, honoring Aretha Franklin. She is a giant talent, but she is a human, and in this performance she brings both together. Bravo, Mme Dion!
i've just discovered this performance and i'm shocked by all this perfection. cèline is able to mix all of her perfect vocal skills with real raw emotions and you can really feel that she was feeling every single word she was singing and that she puts all of her heart into the song. she showed everyone she's still able to reach some real high notes and i think there were no more perfects singers to make a tribute to Aretha but Cèline . she's a pure hearted woman, always grounded and humble, polite and kind to everyone and i love her so much. i just wish that she'll be fine soon because i don't want her to feel any pain and i hope that she'll be able to perform again because i suppose it is one of the things that makes her feel more alive and full of joy in heart.(obviously, apart from her family )
I have watched this performance I guess at least 100 times and I never bothered to take the time to include my comments or replies regarding this heart wrenching performance! This is in my opinion, one of the best performances ( if not THE BEST) vocal performances EVER to be broadcasted by any living or nonliving recording artist!!!!!!! I don't know if Celine will ever see my reply
Wreckless abandon. Celine sings knowing she can tell any story no matter where it takes her. No heights are too high, no verse is too long, no heart felt expression is to deep. Aretha and Celine are kindred spirts linked together through pure vocal perfection mixed with endless joy and ability to sing. They have always been my top two vocalists of all times.
Wow! I’ve never heard Celine sing this way!! Something different came out of her. This was powerful!! The song brought out an emotion I’ve never seen in her! My daddy is African American and I have witnessed him experience discrimination time after time growing up!! 😢 Change is gonna come! RIP Aretha and thank you Celine for that powerful rendition. 🙏praying for your healing!! 💙💙
Céline is a French Canadian , a Québécoise .. we were discriminated pleinful by english canadians .. nothing to compare with black people but we could feel it a little bit ..
many people don't know her catalogue (just the top hits). She has many better songs that show off her range. I really love this performance. When she sings "I believe I can carry on," you can hear both the power of the lyric and her own personal struggles coming through. Her voice wavers like she's trying not to cry but she pushes through. Legend.
I don't know where Celine got so much soul from. Whitney grew up in church and had depression. Mariah was neglected and bullied. Celine was BORN with soul. Periodt
Celine was born with LOVE. It's true. Her family, her manager (also husband), her circle (david, warren, carole, tommy motola), and herself are prove us that Celine live with much love. 🤘😍
@@ch_aldan Celine Dion was number 14 a super large and modest family but it seems there was love and care but life was tough in Charlemagne, Quebec. School was not a kind place. She may joke about it today because she was determined to become a professional singer from a very young age, but she was bullied at school. She had crooked teeth until her adulthood, she was very skinny with very dark eyebrows. Other kids called her "vampire" or "canine Celine". Yet, she was as sweet as a pie but as a true fighter she wanted to become an international singer from the age of five. She not only developed exceptional vocal agility and range, she has natural discipline and adaptability to different musical genres in both French and English, and exceptional resolve to conquer. She could have been born to sing gospel and soul whatever the colour of her skin. She has developed an incredible ability for ad libs and improvisation and by god she can sing. Try to keep it up every day of the week at the top over a 40 year of a singing career, it seems impossible is not Celine. Anyway, what a better tribute to soul music can you give? The way the audience react they know she nailed it.
Celine embodies music. Her voice is an instrument. No matter what genre she can adapt her voice to match it. She doesn't care about her facial expressions or how she may look doing things, she does what she wants to do to convey the music whatever style it may be. She's not self conscious about her image like Mariah would be; she can do vocal effects mimicking instruments and that requires weird facial expressions sometimes.
Ohhh Myyy Goodness!!! I did not know Celine had this in her. I felt it! The audience felt it. I saw the tears and the smiles and the rhythm of movement in the rapture of connecting with the soul in the song! It was AMAZING!
I am a black woman , however Celine is one of my favorite singers. And she is doing a great job with this song., sing Celine! We all have struggles rather we black, white Asian whatever we all have been faced with struggles.
I tell you, other than Aretha Franklin herself, no one in my opinion sings this song better. Celine did probably the best tribute out of anyone. This song sung her way just slayed me. I'm done y'all. I need some communal support right now because these are troubling times. But in Christ, through Christ and because of the Lord, I believe we are going to make it through!!!
Not gonna lie besides Aretha Franklin Otis Redding sung the hell out of this song. Celine and Jennifer Hudson did justice to this soulful song and sounded great.
Maybe her life's best performance. I liked the way how she imitated the details of the original record. It's a very respectful and great work from her.
Celine is one of the most respected divas in Asian and other parts of the world. She can still sing so well at this age. I wish Whitney was alive and maintained her voice because she’s my favorite.
A Legend honouring a Legend.... Celine Dion is a great VOCALIST, No doubt... At her age, she's still able to deliver this powerfully, in which most of her peers can't anymore even the younger singers can't.... I Stan a Queen.... Whitney, Celine Mariah, Aretha Franklin & Barbra Streisand are the greatest vocalists I have ever seen n heard in music industry. Period. Thanks ma for bestowing us with this performance ❤️❤️
Haters will hate ! Celine is a true legendary vocalist regardless of what you talentless people think 😝 and admit it or not she slayed this song and tore the whole house down !
@@spanishlessons4075 it was the media trying to pit them against each other . they competed in the Eurovision before and Celine won . Lara said in an interview that she felt sabotage by celine's management . Not Celine herself. Do you know how the music induatry works ? You need to do some MORE research.
@@spanishlessons4075 really ? Show me the link . I dont think Lara will say something bad to Celine and vice versa . People nowadays makes issues in the very smallest of things . Dont. They didnt say anything bad to each other ever.
Wow! I am floored and in tears. I have been a fan of Celine since her first American musical debut. And have most of her albums and already knew that she would not fail any song she sings. She and Mariah are known as the best remake artist of all time always able to make a cover sound just as great as the original artist version. This is a truly amazing performance.
Such a brave diva..You could tell her voice was starting to falter in the last third of the performance..But she prevailed..She pushed herself, and though it was unhealthy of her to do, she did it..
@@missbumblebee8633 lol go take a listen to aretha's version of this song. If celine is loud, what then do you make of aretha's? Stop being a hater, honey.
@@missbumblebee8633 t I listened to the version of aretha! so aretha has more low notes! on the other hand here celine sings with a 80% chest voice, while aretha sings with 65/70% of chest! Celine sings more on ers chest ans mask voice with volume !! for that we hear the rapsy voice! but this is superb! I would say that here celine invents a new version of this song! more roknroll ... this is superb !! Celine could use without problem her mixed voice to look more like the voice of aretha! they have very similar voices anyway !! put aretha is more sou
You are spot-on, you can see she has listened to Arethas version of this a thousand times, every lick and belt is almost identical. Those super-fast runs and belts are very similar to the Queen in her prime, plus her tone and pitch. Celine is one of the only people who can sing anything like the Queen, all of the others, Hudsons etc.., sound nothing like Aretha. Celine should be playing Aretha in the upcoming movie, not Hudson. They should black Celine up and let her clean up.
she is fantastic ,people forget Celine is a canadian french singer first language ,,and can transmet this song to us and feel it that how a true singer act diva to a diva. great performance again!
LAWD HAVE MERCY!! Ms Celine took us to CHURCH!! All those thumbs down people are asses. They know DAMN well Celine SANG THIS. At some points her voice even sounded a little like ReRe's. You can tell this lady grew up listening to Aretha and other great soul artists. YESSSS!!
