Tavy@ i remember watching this at home in 1984. What a night. But as usual the continental teams always have an ace up there sleeve. A bet when the came to parkhead that night they brought there own empty bottles to throw on to there own players to play act. But i couldnt believe it when we had to play them again at old trafford. And i was sure celtic would just edge it 1-0 or 2-1. I was suprised when they beat us 1-0. Becouse they didnt look that good. But if celtic couldnt beat them at old trafford then they wouldnt have got any further really if they did beat them. There was some great teams at that time from europe. Too good for celtic and rangers and aberdeen and dundee utd.
Celtic made a lot of dirty fouls. Petar Brucic was just stamped down, kick on the head 12:11, by Peter Grant. Normally red card! Celtic Supporters out of every control, throwing lighters and small bottels of whiskey on to the pitch. Yes Kienast gave a punch, after 70 minutes of looking away from the referee. Red card. Peter Grant's foul was the only dirty foul committed by Celtic that night. The Rapid Vienna goalie should also have been sent off along with Kienast. The Rapid player was not hit by any missile. He saw a bottle being thrown onto the pitch which went nowhere near him and then feigned injury as if he was hit. In other words he cheated. Rapid Vienna deserved nothing.

They had 4 players sent off, and one refused to go off till he rememberd he was in glasgow lol 10 minutes it took to get him off. Watching this as a neutral, it is Celtic who trigger all the trouble in this game. It starts with Peter Grant stamping on a Rapid player. Then Tommy Burns elbows another before getting smacked. In reality, Celtic were the better footballing team but you can not blame the Austrians for reacting like this.
I was in the Jungle that night, and, missiles were thrown, however, the Rapid player was not struck by anything, they cheated, plain and simple. Our behaviour at Old Trafford was a night I’d rather forget, the atmosphere was toxic.

I was at the game and I can assure you, rapid players were doing a lot of, off ball fouls on Celtic players well before the Peter Grant incident. Rapid players were a disgrace that night! They simply couldn't handle the Celtic attacking play and resorted to play acting and cheating! Bottles shouldn't have been thrown but as you can clearly see in this video, NO Rapid players were hit! Seen an underhanded opportunity to CHEAT, and toke it.

Bottle and coin throwing is a common thing at Parkhead, started in the 1950's still goes on to this day. The trend peaked in 1967 and again in 1970 all teams were intimidated by it but it took until 1984 (this game) before UEFA took action. The punishment was more to do with everything that had went on before for decades without charge. The Rapid Vienna player who feigned the injury was honoured by UEFA for his bravery.
I went to this game, it was a travesty that such a brilliant Celtic performance eventually counted for nothing. Rapid were well beat and resorted to cheating but UEFA was much worse -the decision to order a replay was rank corruption
Rapid vienna were a good team. They beat celtic 3-1 at home in the first leg, i never saw the match on tv but celtic were the better side by far in the second leg and should have won 5-0 at least. But i was gutted and shocked when it went to a replay at old trafford and rapid won 1-0 and i heard they were the better team that night. But i still dont believe it should have went to a replay. If you just focus on the game at parkhead and the way the rapid players were punshing players and being dirty all round for most of the game. So how does a minute of throwing a bottle from who? No one really knew who threw it, and just becouse it was at the celtic end and what if who ever threw it didnt support celtic? Whats that got to do with the game? Surely the sfa must have seen and they did see that there was much more filth on the park from the rapid players than there was at the jungle So why did they give a replay? The sfa were known to be totaly biased against celtic in those days. And i think the sfa's religion was the root of it, wich makes them worse than any team. Celtic and rangers players have always got on and have a drink with each other, especialy in the 1960s 70s 80s 90s then i started to lose interest in the scottish game as it was just rubbish.
I watched them at pittodrie in 89 in the UEFA cup and they were a very dirty side that would lower themselves in anyway to get a result. They scored a peach of a goal early on and then were lucky to just get the one player sent off after that to hold the lead but lost 2-1 on the night then won 1-0 in Vienna and got through on that away goal. I have never hated a team so much in Europe than this team after watching that lot.

Celtic had some dirty tackles but two rapid players would b charged with assault had it happened in this era where you can't scratch yer balls without the whole world knowing. Rapid did not cheat they took advantage of some stupid thugs throwing bottles and coins, when the game was already won. Celtic were cheated by their own fans. I was at this game in the jungle and at the old trafford replay - total travesty we were ordered to that replay. Recall El Tel agreed with that view. Still had a blast in Manchester I have to admit! Hail Hail! ☘️☘️☘️
Rapid Vienna had all the rights on her side. Glasgow fans threw bottles and matches at our austrian players. this would be impossible in 2017. We met them again in Manchester and we won!

If you meet Dundee united losing at home to gothenberg in 1987 that was not a one off tie at home. It was over two legs as was the format of the uefa cup at that stage.

I'm curious if Celtic fans were equally disappointed in 2014 when they lost a CL qualifier with Legia 1-6 on aggregate but appealed to UEFA and got through, only because Legia fielded an ineligible player for the last 3 minutes of the 2nd leg. Suddenly all the 'fair play tradition' of Celtic turned out to be just idle talk. So forgive me Celtic fans, but you shouldn't feel entitled to call Rapid (or anyone) cheats, scumbags etc., not anymore.
Legia were unlucky of course but the difference is that UEFA would have awarded Celtic the 2nd leg by 3-0 in 2014 regardless of what Celtic did, as it was a clear breach of rules which UEFA was aware of and that is the punishment. In 1984, Rapid told lies and made their appeal to UEFA on the basis of lies. None of their players were struck by bottles or anything else that night. Rapid lied and cheated in 1984. Celtic in 2014 weren’t responsible for Legia playing ineligible players

I remember this, totally and utterly 'Done up like a dinner', tge Austrian's were a disgrace and the so-called authorities who investigated this sort of play-acting should have seen all the dodgy goings on and just given Celtic a fine. Worse things have happened to British sides abroad. Just another excuse for UEFA to ban British teams whilst ignoring other incidents outside Britain.
