I was at that game, I was in Scotland for a holiday with a mates family, they were Scottish and we lived in Oxford, I was use to watching Oxford Utd at the Manor Ground with maybe 15,000 max on a good day, never seen anything like it in my my life, even to this day, the blue disabled cars parked around the pitch, I also remember a Celtic fan running onto the pitch towards the Rangers fans and a cloud of bottles where launched at him, folk outside pissed out of their heads, absolutely great atmosphere, the spitting anger from the Rangers fans when Celtic scored at the end, I was 10 at the time....ironically I now live in Scotland, never really let on I wanted Celtic to win, I'd have been killed, I was in the Rangers end.
Blast from the past, amazing footage. Glasgow in another age, when it was still a huge industrial city. A very strong Celtic team. Murdoch, McNeil, Jinky, Kenny D, George Connolly, Bobby Lennox....Quality. They dont make players like that anymore. Magic. COYBIG
See the difference, these players had no antics, great respect, handshakes when tackles were mistimed. I'm a bluenose, but what a fine footballing club are Celtic.
@@paulritchie5868 I was 14 left the bromloan rd end at 0 0 got to the bottom off the stairs and celts scored headed for govan cross to get a bus to the drum heard a roar thot it was time up it wasnt it was them eqalising got on bus still thot we had won got in my da phoned wat happend at ibrox I said we won 0 1 he said it was 1 1 and people have died I said never saw any trouble I thot he meant crowd trouble he said thank god your ok he said put telly on it's all over the news at the time only about 12 had died
I also was at that game, we always stood in the enclosure next to the tunnel. There were regulars who stood there every couple of wks. If any was over the top with their language or ftp etc they were shouted down. A good mixture of guys and gals; regarding the game it was a great game, except for the score of course. But in Jimmy Johnstone, Scotland had a player who would have graced any club or country on the planet. He was genuinely from my experience, and we (my wife and I) followed the Gers home and away, was the only player who struck fear in our hearts every time he had the ball.... A true giant of the game. A very sad time for me was a few years after he retired from football, he passed us driving a builders van, in fact the back door flew open and he stopped to close it, we shouted kind words to this amazing footballer.
Great points and agree with you here , 2 good sides who played ball , very few long punts up the pitch from the goalkeepers , quick throw outs to the fullbacks and try build from the back and both could hold their own against Euro opponents .
Not long after the Celts won the European Cup in '67. It's 2022 and after Rangers got to the Europa final, so hoping for a return to those days for both Clubs. We're more than capable. Rangers fan.
I was first in Ibrox ( Celtic Supporter ) at 15 years old 1975 I couldn’t believe the sheer size of the ground a vast concrete bowl. But some atmosphere
i was at that match. celtic beat rangers 3 times at ibrox in a month and that was the 3rd one. the other two were 3-0 and 2-0 when dalglish scored with a penalty in his first match against rangers.
cup games I presume, this is before my time, though not by that much wur awe gitting on, where does it go? just watched Celtic beat them again 2nd Sept 2018 so going through old videos, also watching them win in some o them , its the biggest derby in the world to me, sorry am now rambling away from the point, am a little bit pished hail hail , n the best o luck to all.
A headed goal by Jimmy Johnstone in 89 minutes. Not for the first time in a 1971 Old Firm clash. And how much more sporting these matches were back then.
Yes! The famous Arthur Montford sports jacket! I haven't seen it in years. But isn't it great to have this bit of footage from an old firm game? It's 50 years old.
Rangers and celtic used to have crazy supporters the early 70s was mental due to the troubles in Ulster.I can't get my head round that no segregation is in place. In the centenary stand at section C it's just a gap of a few feet no coppers or stewards .
I was a teenager when this match was played . Looking back , it shows how football is so much faster and technically better now . I'm a Celtic fan but I saw nothing wrong with Colin Stein's disallowed goal . Big George Connelly was Celtic's Franz Beckenbauer . What a sad thing for the game of football when George decided to quit due to depression and the pressure placed upon him .
Thers no film off the 2nd game 0 3 even tommy callaghan scored the huns the huns were all over the place that day great memory s 3 in a row at ibrox dalglish a born hun lived across the road from ibrox and he banged one in in every game I cudnt do that against celtic that s why I dont like scot mcdonald for blowing us the league
lol he said how did the shortest man on the pitch Johnstone score with his head for the winning goal?? I'll tell you cause he was a world class player and the huns were pish :-)
My uncle was barman in Evans pub in Bonhill. Fell out with the new wife one night. She thought I went upstairs watching the telly. Had 3 quid in my pocket. But I sneaked oot doon to Evans. Went home pissed and still had my 3 quid. My uncle took care of me. Rip uncle Hugh.
some team then, a few quality streat bhoys ,if we kept them all except gk williams for 5 yr wede have bn in another euro final, that was when money started to engulf english and other high profile leagues, and players were thinking about a big payday and playing for the gersy started its decline, ther were few exceptions tho like jinky mcstay larrson and few more, hail hail
My parents told me about Evan Williams, absolute nightmare goalie!defenders were nervous around him a total liability, thankfully we had a fantastic team to cancel out his numerous mistakes.and the rangers we're a decent team back then.
It isn’t up for debate. Without the cheating years,, asterisk years, EBTs, whatever title you want to put on it, Jimmy Johnston then Henrik. The greatest players ever in Scotland.HH
No matter how good these sides were in their era, most modern teams would absolutely demolish them. But there's something so brilliant watching these old highlights with the simplicity and flow of the game. Felt more entertaining, two teams with massive respect for each other on the pitch going end to end. Scottish football nowadays with every man behind the ball vs celtic or rangers is just fucking boring. Gave my season ticket up at Parkhead because of it and worked with a mad bluenose who did the same. No entertainment whatsoever in watching a one way street.
Whenever I watch old Celtic games from the early 70’s the guy Tommy Callaghan seems to be involved, and from what I can see he plays well. Nobody has ever told me about him though, was he a good player that people have just forgotten about due to the other legends he was playing with?
Celtic signed him from dunfermline around '69 where he had won the Scottish cup in 68...think his brother was also at the pars at same time. He was indeed a fine player and the Celtic fans referred to him as TC.
I've read somewhere the Lisbon Lions were given one final game together at the the very end of the '70- '71 season in a harmless league match. I think it was against Clyde?
We played Clyde at Shawfield. Simpson got injured and Tommy Gemmel went in goals. Knee deep in snow, midweek afternoon KO due to floodlights not working, Celts won 1-0. My dad came into my class room at Abotsford place and took me there with my broad smile. Not sure of the full team though.
@@peteincretepm Vaguely remember that...hoops fans walking down Calder st past my school to polmadie....I think the Clyde game in '71 was the last appearance by the Lions...Ronnie Simpson lined up as they saluted the fans but I think John Fallon actually played in goals...heady days indeed.
Clear goal from Stein that would have put Rangers 3-2 ahead . Yeah even in those days Rangers were getting all the decisions aye right . Good video .Rare find
Celtic fan. A Totally different era, players had respect for each other, no cheating or diving or rolling about like they got pole axed, only just realised watching this that the Celtic fans got half the centenary stand too, so close to each other and no trouble, couldnt see the Rangers fans getting half the jungle haha.
Match Report was a wee spin off from the Scotsport team and was usually an atrocious production....unwatchable at times especially when Alex Cameron was the 'commentator' or Bob Crampsey🤣🤣🤣
Great days , great players on both sides. But I still do not like the sectarianism on both sides. Never forget as 10 year old going to watch my friends play for the local boys brigade in EK. They where one short , and my best friend , a protestant , said he said he can play. So the, they let me play in those old ash parks, we won 5-1 , I scored 4 , the guy who was running, it said after it, can you play for us every week, I said sure, then he asked, what school do you go to, Our lady of Lourdes said I, sorry son we cannae use you. Didnt think twice about it, told my dad and my mate what happened, he went nuts , my dad, just shook his head, dont worry about it son. They will get over it. My best friends from my young years are all protestants. They treated me with great respect, I seen the bad on both sides. I always hoped it would end in my lifetime. But no its still there.
My mother and father got married in a registered office went to the pictures after and went home to there own houses because one was catholic and one was prodestant some honeymoon eh
Think the Stein no-goal was 50-50. His foot was pretty high with studs maybe showing, but I (Celtic fan who remembers game) wouldn't have complained had it been given. I have never bought the theory espoused by some of my fellow Celts that Rangers enjoy all the bad or doubtful decisions in Old Firm games. I have sure seen plenty of that, but I have also seen Celtic benefit from bad or doubtful decisions.
Nah rangers have always been lousy losers 65 66 cup final they attacked celtic players 19 69 they were getting battered 3 0 at at ht and they were battering one another hibs later they just cant take it manchester Barcalona newcastle manchester again Birmingham lousy losers blue and white shite
I thought it should have stood, though it seems keepers were over protected even back then. I seriously doubt Jimmy Johnstone was offside for the goal he had disallowed either. he looked onside, and that was well after the ball had been kicked.
@ Michael Lubin - The players back then were real men, not like the big jessies of today. That's why they had to have the square posts - otherwise the players would just be smashing their bonces off them repeatedly for no good reason, just to show them who was boss.
@@rabbieburns2501 LOL😂😂😂 how much more would the hoops have won wae a quality keeper over this period? Evan Williams/Dennis Connaghan/Ally Hunter/Roy Baines/PeterLatchford......still sure we woulda won in Seville if it hadn't been for auld careless hauns Rab Douglas.
Evan Williams is the Celtic keeper. One of the worst goalies I have seen in a Celtic shirt. Celtic used to beat Rangers quite regularly during this period.
Yes, but he was generally a bomb scare . I cannot remember him saving one penalty. Even big Jock criticized Williams publicly . That Euro -final I remember quite clearly . Celtic totally under-estimated a very goodFeyenoord team and were too cocky. Wee Bertie was non existent that night - Connelly should have played . Their number 10 , Van Hanagem ran the show .
Made that same point on this thread before I had read ur comment...yeah right beside each other and apparently this was the same at all ibrox games in that enclosure...nae trouble???
There was practically a wire as segregation. It seemed both sets of fans knew their place and celebrated the goals without trying to goad the opposition. Changed days indeed. Better time to be a football fan.
Just shows that unlike you Fenians we don't have as much hatred. Still, perplexed as to why the Stein goal never stood? Didn't see Alfie Conn being red carded there - did it have an influence on the match? Who was marking wee Jimmy Johnstone, I wonder if someone asked him after the match "what the fekk where you doing?" LOL
I'll do that IF you can get the Plastics to return to what THEY SAY is their homeland... here - otherwise I'm staying put. Scotland has been destroyed with the amount of Irish folk (and others) that have arrived - Scots are leaving all the time so you're basically taking over a nation... stealing a country, when you have one of your own... like a cuckoo sitting on some others nest... soon they'll be no 'Real Scots' left and you can see that by looking at the comments in Census data every ten year. Seems to me if all lands (Scotland, England, Wales, France, Montenegro and Serbia etc etc) were inhabited by only people who see themselves as native to that land, and those who saw themselves native to other lands (Plastics etc) returned 'home' then that'd be the ideal solution. That has a big drawback for Ireland as it'd be full to the brim of Plastics from lots of nations (didn't one of your countrymen say the same? De Valera?, and in Scotland's case undesirables you'd NOT be happy to see return!!! Scotland would be a great place as most places would be. Ireland is a beautiful place because you've got rid of all those foul mouthed anti-social types... By the way Henry your 'Go Back To Scotland / Britain' is uttered is complete hypocrisy as I'd hazard a guess those in Britain who say 'Go Back To Ireland' would be met by cries of XENOPHOBES!!! You a xenophobe Henry? :o)
