To me, this is a newer version of the same class of ship, much like a K'Tinga is a newer and more detailed version of the original D7. After the war, the Centauri would have had to rebuild a lot of their Fleet and they would have had some new things to add as a result of advancements made during the war, and just added them to essentially the same space frame they had used before. Just like I could see newly built K'Tinga flagship leading a fleet of older D7s I could see one of these leading a fleet of older generation Centauri warships.

*Samuel, Centauri convention-cosplay, compulsory!* Your posh impersonation of the Centauri was spot-on, it's a fun decadent Imperial style that their culture uses and I could totally see you selling it! Since you've played Emperors before, hehe , and Centauris indicate their rank by the height of their hair-fan, by the time you got the hair piece done you would nearly 7 feet tall! I've been collecting things here and there for my own Centauri costume, since they are quite unique when it comes to some of the fine details, and hope to have my own costume someday because I always thought that their style was fun and over-the-top as far as Style, that's one shouldn't underestimate their ability to be manipulative and deceptive while they're telling jokes. And most of the costume is a very similar pattern to any 18th century European courtiers' top coat and I suspect that you have access to things of that nature considering your acting and producing credentials/connections. Plus your dad's work in historical reenactments as well as the ability to help with the costume, and maybe even join you, would be pretty fantastic. You can even incorporate your waistcoat into the design of the darker costume that Londo wore when his character took a more serious tone. The hair is the coup de gras, and a style that stands out among other costumes. But the Centauri are great, not simple black-and-white villains like so many tend to be, they are quite layered so they can be over the top and boisterous one moment and very sneaky and conniving the next, if you can imagine a Ferengi and a Romulan mixture, but in my mind that is more realistic than each race just having one primary trait. Babylon 5 was very good in that regard, fleshing out the various races to be more varied and realistic. It would be a great addition to your impressive list of characters from different franchises! Really appreciate this review of this beautiful design, I've always been impressed with what they were trying to do with the original Babylon 5 and just seems like the fruition of what they were trying to achieve originally. Stuart seemed a bit indifferent to this design, but that didn't damper my enthusiasm for it! Thanks for covering it and obtaining the assets and sharing them with us!

It's not uncommon for warships to change appearance and still be remain the same class of ship. Two examples of this are the Los Angeles class attack subs which started with its dive planes on its sail (conning tower) and and 4 torpedo tubes. Later boats in the class were built with the dive planes on the hull and in addition to its 4 existing topedo tubes a vertical launch system was added yet the USN still calls them LA class boats. The other example is the carrier USS Midway, from the time that she was commissioned to the time she was retired she was heavily refitted twice resulting in a radical change in her appearance but throughout it all she remained a Midway class carrier.

I'm not even sure if its a Vorchan, or at least it is a newer successor model, pretty sure its larger. In The Lost Tales it was in a vision Sheridan had there were these Centauri cruisers fighting EA Warlock class cruisers and seemed evenly matched which w as surprising. I'd say the Warlock outclassed the old Vorchan and Primus.
@adrastos8401
@adrastos8401 5 лет назад
It isn't a Vorchan it is listed as a Vorcheen class in the canon B5Wars game it is nearly twice as big 1km long as opposed to 600m and has drakh and shadow tech built in Edit: though I can't confirm it so it could be a Deimos class also, one of the ships in the background si clearly a bavarin class carrier (probably where the fighters come from as centauri warships generally don't carry fighters) Edit:2 looking at the silhouette it is definitely a Deimos class
@imonlyamanandiwilldiesomed4406
The centurai are 200+ years ahead of the EA. It wouldnt surprise me if a smaller but more advanced Centurai ship could punch above its weight.
@adrastos8401
@adrastos8401 5 лет назад
And also they sacrifice armor to do that, and we have no idea how many Deimos class ships there were. We see a warlock take a full barrage from 2 Deimos class vessels and come out unscathed, and a single Deimos class vessels gets oneshotted by the same warlock's Heavy Particle Beams. The Centauri could have started with a lot more ships.
@imonlyamanandiwilldiesomed4406
@@adrastos8401 Deimos class ships? I've searched the net and found no reference to such a class. Those are vorchans.

Babylon 5 doesn't get nearly enough credit for the creative effort that went into the aesthetics for each race and their ships.

Love Babylon5. BTW it wasn't supposed to be a movie but a new show which was supposed to be straight to DVD, however JMS canceled it after the first episode as he felt their wasn't enough budget to do them justice. JMS of course in his own way killed B5 as it could have kept going with a smaller budget maybe bigger later but his ego got in the way.

If you just seen it recently, then you saw updated effects for the first episode. The actual first episode had even clunkier effects, that were updated for when it was first released for individual purchase on video tape. Luckily I had recorded the original version of the first show so I own both the original non special edition Babylon 5 premiere, and the updated Premiere with all "new" effects and music. So I would say it's due for another update using models such as this! That would make me very happy!

Original design looks sleeker, less clunky, more advanced. Like a Zumwalt class destroyer versus a WW1 destroyer.

Antimatter fuel tanks? Really, Samuel? B5 doesn't use M/AM for power. Fusion for sublight and Quantium 40 for hyperdrive.

No Mimbari warships and fighters use Antimatter fuel cells.

And one might excuse a channel whose primary focus is on Star Trek to relate many ships to that type of propulsion since that is what we talk about most of the time. And it is conjecture after all, if somebody knows what it is that's what this comment section is for. I have never heard of that fuel source even though I was an avid fan of the series, so I've learned something from you today! Thank you!

The Centaury did not use fusion, they used antimatter-matter reactors. Fusion was used by the Earth Alliance and other similarly young races. The Centaury were ahead in terms of technology to everyone but the old ones (Vorlons and Shadows) and the Minbari.

I do not dislike the update, and there is a good possible explanation, at the end of the series the Centurari suffered planatary bombardment, lost a lot of their fleet and were forced to pay damages for their role in a war. This would have put severe strain on their resorces, they needed new ships but could not afford to build them with the tech they used to use so they used lower tech parts in constructing it, the armor is lower grade (because they ether cannot afford or lost the factories producing the high tech armor) so has to be much thicker and heavier hence more engines, they used less advanced but greater numbers of cannons giving it more firepower

@90lancaster 5 лет назад
The older ones need to look a wee bit clunky so as to get across the point that the Centauri are stagnant - this would be a later period where hopefully they'd got past some of their troubles with the Shadows and got closer to the Interstellar Alliance - but the upgrade could have been commissioned at any point from during the shadow war to afterwards - likely after they got bombed to hell by the drasi and friends. They'd need to upgrade as everyone else was too.

i miss the colors of the old version. That was one of the things i loved about B5- how much color they used as opposed to the grey of most other sci-fi shows

They should really make a few more B5 one offs or movies (seem to keep being cancelled). There isn't very much canon footage of Warlock class destroyers which only really showed brief appearances in the series. Would be great to see them modelled with modern techniques, detailing, lighting.
@NightOwlModeler

I like the old ship structure configuration better. Maybe some of the texturing of the new one, but should have kept the brighter colors of the original palette. The ribs in the wings breaks up the profiles too much, unless it's articulated at that point, but then why are the wings angled back? Eww. I'd prefer to think this is a refitted class, not a reconned ship, as the old version looked 'sleeker' and more advanced. Centauri were falling off from power as the Shadows left, so their designs should have followed the same course after the Shadow War. NOM

I've always liked this ship until I realized it wasnt ST I saw it on a video about "why do space ships have wings" I thought it was like romulan ship or a hybrid ship like a joint design with Klingons since the shared designs
@90lancaster
@90lancaster 5 лет назад
The easy answer is they act as a mounting boom for the thrusters to move the ship on it's access as well as radiators to get rid of excess heat. The Horizontal wings are more or less just there to hold the main guns and the breaking thrusters. But iconographically speaking they reference the Centauri hair style.

Well she would need some shuttle access points (as they don't have matter transmission tech) so they should by right be on there somewhere.

Firstly 1997 to 2007 is ten years, not twenty. Just saying. As for the ship, I like the increased detailing but I don't like how they broke up the sweep of the rear ventral curve. I prefer the original design, albeit accounting for the huge drop off in quality.
@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 5 лет назад
Well, I think you can split the difference there since the series came out earlier than 1997 so the actual time would have been in the roughly 15 year range. I did catch that, but I also realized he was just making the point that what a difference have been made since the end of the series 2 the Lost Tales, just in the general sensitive been a long time without worrying about the specific number of years that have been. Just basically "this was a long time after this design was first shown", and just threw out a number to indicate that it has been some significant stretch of time, since he's our mission briefings that just appreciate the models and conjecture about them rather than doing a lot of research beforehand. A first-look is going to naturally have a few misconceptions that weekend correct here in the comment section. :-)
