B5 is by far one of the best sci-fi series out there. Set the standard for CGI and arc-based storylines and is inarguably what DS9 was based on. Def worth a watch, Captain!
@CRocketSlim

I'm a huge B5 nerd but even back in the day the CGI was so-so. Granted, I'm sure Star Trek etc. wouldn't have gotten into replacing all their photographic miniatures with digital had the B5 team not put in the groundwork for making that more feasible

Yeah, I remember the first seasons, the CGI was "meh"... which sort of made me overlook this show for a while. But they did got better in later seasons. And this is when I realized the mistake I made of overlooking this awesome series.

The CGI in Farscape's first season was also relatively poor for the times (1999), but then improved very much from Season 2 onwards.

Earth force didn't have artificial gravity and it was a big disadvantage. Earth ships had to be bulkier and less manoeuvrable, it was a big disadvantage that the Earth ships had. This was why Babylon 5 was a spinning station as they didn't have the tech for gravity generation. In the show this was expressed when they began to build the Whitestar fleet as the Gravity tech was gifted to them by the Minbari so they could make powerful but also small and manoeuvrable ships.

These guys put themselves forward as sci fi nerds and spaceship aficionados but they've never seen B5? FAIL! But of course they consider Star Trek a "real world feel" so that speaks volumes!
@dspserpico
@dspserpico 7 лет назад
How does Trek ships have more of a "real world feel?" I love Trek, but I've always felt that Starfleet ships were designed like a cross between an airliner and a cruise ship. Further, any design or structural flaw can be overcome be some kind of force field, like a structural integrity field or the forcefield that keeps in atmospehere. Making your design work by virtue of some kind of forcefield isn't very realistic. Babylon 5 warships are designed like armored submarines in space. If humanity is a spacefaring race in two hundred years the spaceships will look much more like Babylon 5's ships than Trek.

Babylon 5 was a great sci-fi series with very interesting story arcs and great character development. However. You really have to watch it from the beginning. It is not the type of show you can just jump into without feeling lost. I have always wondered where the command bridge was on this ship. It appeared to have gravity so I imagine it was spinning. Babylon 5 seems to be the red headed step child of the sci fi world. I have been told a big part of that was it did not have the benefit of a big studio to promote it.
@CRocketSlim
@CRocketSlim 7 лет назад
Given they weren't motivated by Gene Roddenberry's design aesthetics I'm sure the Command Center was deep within the rotating section... well, not too deep as to lose the artificial gravity effect

You guys have a funny sense of realism if you think Star Trek embodies realism as the standard others Sci Fi has to be measured against. That said, Star Treks appeal lies less in its commitment to realism and more to its courage to explore ideas. At least that's been the draw for me to Roddenberry's universe. I find that J.J. Abrams universe is really a departure from Gene's vision and focuses more on war and waging it.

Stewart says it looks like the Sulaco. It doesn't. It looks like the Leonov from 2010. My only issue with the ship is the rotating section has a big section then a smaller section on the far outside. I think they should be reversed so the larger section would have the greater gravity. Star trek is NOT a real world feel, just the opposite. The Omega destroyer is something we would build with our current tech except for the lasers and the engines which we don't have yet. The spinning section is the ONLY part that has gravity(via the spinning) and C&C is in the spinning section. Considering this is the show that paramount ripped off to make DS9 Stewart should know more about it. " I think it would be very bad at turning" Shakes head. These two know nothing about the reality of the physics. The ship can spin 360 on a dime. It's changing the vector that would take some time. These ships aren't fast off the mark, they build speed cumulatively. Fighters are in the "head" for landing and the launch bays are just behind it. There is another lauch section just behind the rotating section. There are no "doors" it's an open landing bay. Once landed they are moved by track through one of several smaller doors into airlocks for servicing. The BIG "door" in the front view isn't a door but crash shielding armour. Hyperspace is a "dimension" it is a physical place, the hyperspace engine opens a "window" to enter that dimension. The Cannons are PPG Phased Plasma Gun that fires a bolt of energized, super-heated helium sheathed in an electromagnetic field(large and smaller). There are smaller interceptor weapons that kill fighters and PPG shots called interceptors(slugs of metal basically). The interceptors are the smaller guns at the "head". babylon5.wikia.com/wiki/Omega_class_destroyer#cite_note-sevdrms-5

^^^ This. So much this. They trying to apply ST physics, which visually follows an in-atmosphere model where you see ships rolling and banking to change their direction (vector) like an F-15 which of course doesnt happen in space. B5 follows real Newtonian physics.
@trr94001
@trr94001 7 лет назад
One thing to remember about the design aesthetic of Earth ships in B5 is that Earth has inferior technology compared to other species yet manages to be a major power by applying a brute force approach to it's ships. The Omega is huge because it's built around a gigantic fusion reactor needed to power what is essentially a huge ion drive rocket.
@waltermc3906

The Omega Class Destroyer was designed for one thing... SPACE DOMINANCE. the projection of power Heavily Armed and Armored. the Idea of this ship was based of off the idea of a modern day carrier group, but all in one ship. Loaded with such a variety of weapons and capability that in order to get close enough to harm it, you would have to enter a field of overlapping death so intense that you probably will not close enough before you are just vapor in space the who idea is if one of these shows up, shit is going to MESSY.
@Galvars

The longitudinal things under the "cylinders" on the prow are heavy plasma mortars. They never been used in show but they had been placed there by modelers just in case. Starfury contingent count two full squadrons with 36 machines. And design of Omega was inspired by "Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov" from 2010: Odyssey Two.
@CRocketSlim

they HAVE been used on screen, but on a Nova class, the gunship sister model of the Omega, in the movie In the Beginning, clearly firing dead on into the camera (from Minbari POV). As these ships share the cowl section its reasonable to assume the newer Omega would have those as well.

Gravity on these ships only exist in the spinning part. The rest is only weapons and engineering and the front part is weapons and starfury hangar. The bridge is in the centrifugal part.

The B5 universe has a very wide range of types of ships. Earth force is a very ugly form compared to many of the alien races that have many that so outclass Star Trek in look and performance. Earth force were very young race compared to the others. Several races even have organic ships. You might be able to tell I am a B5 fan. In fact, the earth force fighter ships impressed NASA enough to make plausible plans for future designs.

As far as I remember, the front bay was more for shuttle craft. The Star Fury launch system and hangar, as in Babylon 5 itself, was part of the rotating part. Therefore the deployment of the Furies was aided by the outwards going centrifugal force. Nice episode, and makes me wanna re-watch Babylon 5...ah Bruce Boxleitner

@briandeiwert5911
@briandeiwert5911 7 лет назад
When Foundation Imaging was doing the FX they designed Starfury launches to come out of Cobra Bays in the rotating section. You can see the hatches in the show. When Netter Digital took over the FX they took the design, but didn't realize what everything was for so they never rendered a Starfury launch out of the rotational section. A shame as that would have been so awesome to watch on screen. For a little bit of trivia the long straight section between the engine section and the rotating section is where the missiles were kept. You can see 72 red hatch covers on the show. Sadly was never an Omega class destroyer launching missiles. Again that would have been an awesome shot to see. A shame we never saw the full potential of an Omega on the show. The front cannons by the launch bay were the 'small' weapons per Paul Bryant.
@badbeardbill9956
@badbeardbill9956 6 лет назад
That's not how centrifuges work... They have a velocity vector perpendicular to the centripetal force vector. Dropping a Starfury out of the rotating section would fling it outwards, yes, but it would mainly go in the direction of the velocity vector that it had while within the rotating section.

@enterprise-h312 7 лет назад
+DrewLSsix The warp nacelles on the Defiant were called the smallest, most powerful warp engines to date. That is why I brought them up. I know that the shuttles have smaller nacelles still. +CRocketSlim There is Coaxial Warp Drive, Quantum-Slipstream, the Borg use a Transwarp Network, Species 8472 use quantum singularities, the Federation is experimenting with soliton waves, the Nacene use displacement waves and the Iconians who tried to use gateways were hunted into extinction. While I would like to see more forms of FTL, like Quantum-Slipstream or Subspace Vortex (Xindi), I have to take a step back and acknowledge that most franchises have just one type of FTL propulsion.

Info: In B5 only some races have developed artificial gravity by themselves, being those the Vorlons, the Minbari and the Centauri. The Omega-class destroyer is designed in order to create gravity by rotating sections (the same technology used in the own station. Also, Babylon 5 is more like... well... an Intergalactic version of the United Nations. After a bloody war between the Earth and Minbar due to a diplomatic misunderstanding, both nations agree that there is need for an station in which those kind of misunderstanding can be easily solved in a diplomatical way, working as the Society of Nations in the 1920s: five great powers (Vorlons, Minbari Federation, Narn Regime, Centauri Empire and Earth Alliance) as well as some small races which act as one in the "League of Independent Worlds"
@CRocketSlim

Spoilers: DS9 is a rip off of Babylon 5. The creator of B5 went to Paramount before landing the gig with Warner Brothers. So, when I hear you say Star Trek is the 'superior brand' then why are they ripping off stories from other people? It's a well known story if you do more research into your subjects.

Shows like that are a multi-part novel. Novels generally don't make sense if you decide to start reading with Part 2, Chapter 12. Especially if you read Part 3, Chapter 1 next! It's referring to all sorts of characters, locations & history you don't know, because all that was established in Part 1. Babylon 5 was one of the first American TV shows to treat the series as a novel: with each episode being a chapter & each season being a part.

The Omega was also fitted with 'nuclear' mines and 72 missile bays although we never saw how effective they were as they would have been too expensive for the show's CG budget! I'm not sure if there are any official numbers but some suggest that the Omega carried around 30 fighters, so despite Earth being quite behind in technology the Omega was a brute force attempt at a powerful vessel, and it worked.

those turret cannons scattered all across the hull are the 40mm Pulse Cannons. theyre basically the AA guns. the 3 silo looking things under the launch door on the front are the capacitors for the 2 large lasers under them. B5 also took a much more realistic approach to space than most other scifi series, star trek included. humanity was not united. humans could create energy weapons but not any that were effective in space combat. they could create missiles but they were less effective against newer materials, kinda like everything vs neutronium in star trek. shields did exist in B5 but the power requirement was astronomical and highly impractical. which is why the minbari opted for the jamming technology, because if ya cant hit the ship that ship doesnt need shields. B5 used hyperspace to move faster than light. they had other technology to move, kinda like warp drive, but even as it is in star trek, it wasnt fast enough to get to the points of interest. in B5 the galaxy isnt as populated as it is in trek. the omega isnt fast nor does it maneuver that well. its a large ship so it will require large engines just to get that mass moving.

The Starfuries are launched from the spinning section, that way the spinning section imparts velocity on the fighter to throw it clear of the carrier. The forward bay was for recovering fighters. The producers got lazy in some of the later seasons when they started just launching fighters from the forward bay. On the subject of turning, in theory they could use the spin section as a momentum wheel. Apply brakes on the spin section and the rotational force will cause torque that will cause the ship to rotate.

Omega class Destroyer was fast once it got moving. (inertia). The rotating section created a gyroscopic action on the ship making turns problematic. The fighters were launched from the front of the ship and could be retrieved aft and rear when in battle. There were forward and aft omega lasers that fired only in one direction. Earth Alliance ships were armored. There were multiple smaller cannons for point to point defense and short range attacks. There are anti-missile, gun fire batteries under the launch bay.

Take out the rotating section and put some bigger looking guns on it and you get the Nova class Dreadnought ;) There were also some heavily alien enhanced Omega destroyers in one episode that were even deadlier! The cannons pivot in all directions, makes for an impressive fireworks display! Also, the red doors along the sides of the hull are supposed to be torpedo/missile doors but were never really shown in the show, just like the fighters launching from the rotating section. I have to add, after seeing some Facebook comments on this video I was thinking this was going to be difficult to watch but I don't know what they were talking about regarding the Captains reaction to this ship. I think it was a great discussion between both of you.

Robert Barrett the reason behind that it was shot out of order, there is two pilots and you if follow the uniforms changes it tells a better story, but yeah it wasn't good, but if it had a chance to get season two, might have been far better, I love the ship, I hope there a movie that storyline is tie-up and the character's development is finished, someone need to give JMS enough money and time to bring the Crusade story line and what happens after the lost tells movie

It's probably because advancing in an area of technology can then allow you to start streamlining and making items more aesthetically pleasing. When you are fighting to get something to work at all how it looks is the furthest thing from your mind. Look at solar panels, since they were first developed they've been large ugly, mostly glass and metal, panels but recently companies have started working toward making them aesthetically pleasing to widen their appeal.

Great episode.The secondary fighter launch system is in the rotary section. The outer portions are called cobra bays. They launch the fighters with centrifugal force , the fighter is essentially thrown from the bay. The two flat/thin structures below the three circular domes are mega-mine launchers . The mines are supposed to be major ship wreckers. Along the sides of the ship the red x squares are missile launchers the ship has 72 along it's hull. The ship uses armor and an active interceptor system , a point defense system that intercepts inbound fire that is the primary defense for the open bay. The side turrets have beam projectors for cutting attacks and and pulse canons for impact attacks. The mid ship canons can elevate their gun barrels. The fighter capacity is 40.

Forgot only the rotating section has gravity the rest is zero g. I believe it was mentioned that the crew uses a velcro style system to"walk" along the non- gravity sections. And just this for fun. "Yes, I can confirm that I ‘lifted’ the centre section off the Leonov in 2010 for the centrifuge. That's why the profile is exactly the same. I was feeling mischievous, so I added this little nod to the design. I thought someone was going to spot it immediately but no, it was years before anybody called me on it (it would have been an easy fix to change the profile)." - Paul Bryant, Source: B5Scrolls (2008)

This ship was mostly a warship, combining a battleship and an aircraft carrier. The hyperspace gengerater is only used to go FTL and to reenter realspace so the ship must contious thrust to counter the effects of the gravitational gradiant. The starfuries are launched using what is called the Pezz dispencer being brought up from the lower decks. The armament is designed for other capital ships, planetary bombardment and space stations.

Finally a look at the Omega class in B5???? YAY!!!! The B5 wiki says that if one of these came to your world, you could be in a lot of trouble. They were among the most powerful of the young races. The budget of B5 didn't allow the creators to show as much of the firepower of this ship as they wanted to. I guess it had a ton of missile silos that we never got to see. Also, in the B5 universe there were no energy shields. Earthforce ships relied on high speed gun interception to shoot down fighters, or enemy ordnance before the enemy could hit them. These ships were powerful, and could do considerable damage to Minbari ships even. They didn't come into Earthforce service until after the Earth/Minbari war. I believe in season 4 Earth upgraded the scanners on the Omega destroyers, so that they could now defeat the stealth tech that the Minbari use.

Living Compartments and Command and Control(bridge) are all in the rotational "gravity generator". That is why in the show they were walking on the bridge. Since it rotates though it is hard to target C&C effectively. The bow of the ship is primarily carrier facilities.

Ah one of my favourite ever Starships. The Earth Alliance Omega class destroyer, that went online after the Earth-Minbari war. Although you do see some of them in the TV movie 'In The Beginning' - which technically is wrong as the Earth Alliance did not develop artificial gravity until after the Earth-Minbari war. The first vessel that came online was the Nova class (which does not have artificial gravity) when it went online towards the end of the war.

B5 had touched on the fact that the spinning section is off duty crew quarters. Off duty the crew goes to the outer part of the spin section to keep away the detrimental effects of zero gravity. Any time the crew is out of the spin they are typically shown strapped down to a seat. Or walking along with there hands on the ceiling. There are plenty earth ships that have no spinning section and the crew can't stay out on patrol for more than a few months before going to a base to recuperate. Only at the end of the series did the Mimbari give them true artificial gravity.

The original plan for the main hanger bay was for recalling fighters only. The Starfuries were supposed to be launched from the spinning section, using centrifugal force, and when recalled were taken back in and moved through the ship back into their launch bays.

Really enjoying these videos on what are effectively,sadly,dead franchises. I know this is just an overview but some things for you guys to look at. Earth ships didn't get artificial gravity generators working until the warlock class and arguably the omega class. The only confirmed,without question,ships that have shields are the third space aliens,some say the vorlons have them based on one 2 second clip in the first vorlon/shadows battle depicted in the show. Some of earth ships have "E-webs",basically like explosive reactive armor only it's energy balls/plasma/particles to intercept enemy plasma or missiles. B5 ships can be so big because they use the same amount of energy to create a hyper space portal whether they are 500m or 1000m,there is a "minimum"amount of energy required to open them so if you are stuck with the same amount of energy you may as well make the biggest ships possible. Star trek on the other hand has to generate CONSTANT power to go faster then light which means the size and MASS of the ship is very important because the heavier it is the more energy to MOVE it.
@krisguntner4805
@krisguntner4805 7 лет назад
They have said similar things in the original battle star series but also never showed it anywhere. The only CONFIRMED time shields were shown in B5 was in the third space movie and ONLY being used by the third space aliens. Interestingly on his old site a few years back,7-10?,j michael starczynski himself said the andromeda,from the series,was much more powerful,weapon wise,then the minbari sharlin class,giving us a rough idea of that universes tech level,and based on that and that andromeda universe tech is overall less advanced then star treks we can then get an idea of one universe going against another tech wise.

Omega/Nover class (the platform) the bridge is in the centre of the rotational section which provides them with artificial gravity. The pulse cannons are on the top and bottom of the ship and are mounted on turrets to allow better coverage, i believe there are some secondary cobra bays in the afft sections, in a combat mission they would work in small a fleets and work together but these are the big boy ships

With regards to the forward hanger, that was not really the way fighters were launched. While sometimes ships (ie. shuttles, special fighter escorts) were launched from there, it is really the receiving bay for returning fighters. Fighters were usually quick launched from the bays located in the mid section, between the engines and the rotating section. if you recall any of the fighter launching scenes from the show, the pilots got inside and then the star-furies where swiveled 90 degrees down (basically outward and away from center of the ship) and then launched. Very reminiscent of the quick launch bays from Battlestar Galactica, just without the catapults.

Humanities finest ship before alien(Minbari/Vorlon) technology were aquired/took over and changed A LOT(artificial grav. jamming systems, shields). Bab 5 was MUCH MORE realistic before that change... I like the show. Btw. It is said if Earth alliance had OMEGA DESTROYERS in the Minbari war, things would have been VASTLY different.

the Omega Class Destroyer uses the rotating section to produce gravity, and we only see the Bridge of these vessels in the show. later near the end of the show the Mimbari share artificial gravity tech with the Earth Alliance, so the later Victory and Warlock Class vessels have these systems incorporated into them. the Omega class is derived from an earlier similar vessel without the rotating center mass the Nova Class Dreadnought. Also the ship is powered by multiple fusion reactors.

fighters are launched from the tips of the spinning section. It uses centrifugal force to be able to launch its entire compliment of fighters very quickly. The frontal docking bay is for retrieval and shuttle craft. Theoretically I suppose with enough finesse the rotating bit could be stopped and the fighters individually propel themselves back into their launch tubes if the retrieval bay was damaged or otherwise inoperable.

on another note: timecode 15:00 on: I got me the resin model kit of this beast years ago, and I was utterly confused by the prominent forward "cheek" cannons, as they are actually of the same arrangement and not mirrored (you know, to have symmetry with both port and starboard big barrels on top and the beam lasers below, and not crisscrossed as they actually are supposed to be). I actually contacted the shop for a replacement left cannon much to their amusement.

Omega destroyers could turn on the spot fairly quickly, only inertia would keep them going forward, so it would rotate 180 degrees then apply thrust in the opposite direction to physically turn would be by the bearest fraction of degrees at a time.(So more efficient to spin on it's axis then thrust off in new direction.) The tabletop game B5 wars explains it wonderfully well with thrust points used to move and turn with direction of travel remaining constant unless thrust was applied to push off in the new direction. Since omegas didn't turn very well they packed it with multidirection ppc's. The main laser batteries did indeed fire fore and aft(With some incline/decline and left/right possible.) No idea where the bridge is on the omega but considering they appeared to have gravity on their bridges it would likely be deep inside the rotating sections surrounded by as much armour as possible. Again B5 wars has ship hit location diagrams which would point you in the right direction. Worth looking into for your more detailed investigation later. hope that helps.(Oh no shields but they did use their guns for "Intercepting" other energy blasts, wouldn't stop lasers though, which is why the Minbari murdered them so rapidly as they love their beams, frequently cutting ships in half. Watch the movie B5 "In the beginning" as it goes through the reasons for the earth/minbari war and why the Minbari surrender just as they are about to exterminate the human race)

As to the issue of weapons there are two banks of 40 or so missiles on each side (but are never seen due to budget issues) & two gigaton class fusion mine launchers at the front. The large front guns sponsons each mount a laser cannon & pulse cannon. The turrets are referred to as interceptors & are essentialy CIWS beam guns of wich there are 16 8 in front/back.

As others have stated Earth didn't have artificial gravity until last season as it was given to earth for them being apart of " Sheridan's alliance" also only the vorlons show any sign of shield technology however no species uses ship shield technology. The only defences types are armor and interceptors. There are two types of armor: metal and organic armor earth used metal armor (except for the shadow based omega destroyers that used semi organic armor.) The omega destroyers use several meters of armor. ( 10m if I recall). Also the front weapons have particle beam and plasma pulse cannons combined in one turret. The omega design is based of the Nova design with the only big difference being the rotating section. Also based on the fact that when the bridge is shown it has gravity it has to be based in the spinning section. The ship is considered to be a powerful ship compared to most other species, exceptions being Minbari, vorlon and shadow ships.
@Scriptedviolince

I don't feel it's bigger to be more powerful. It's bigger because the technology is inferior. Star trek you have the warp core and the impulse engine, but Babylon 5 doesn't have that. To move a huge mass, you need huge engines. If you have huge engines, you need lots of reaction mass. To provide power, you need a huge reactor. To power that reactor you need huge fuel tanks. When you have all this huge stuff, you need bigger engines. Big engines. Big reactor. Big ship. Then you need to stick guns on it too. Bigger engines. Bigger reactor. Even bigger engines. Did I mention big engines?

You have to remember the B5 is based on achievable tech from where we are no, where as Trek is based on idealized tech. The hanger launch tube is partitioned in the back that leads to the hanger deck. C and C would be in the spinning section which is the only section that has artificial gravity. Earth doesn't have grav plating or the like at this point and uses spin gravity to produce artificial gravity. The ship would run on reactor , likely nuclear of some kind so fuel will last a long time. It does have thrusters for it to turn but B5 more accurately depicted starship turns which is something most sf show, trek included , doesn't do very well.

The ships on Babylon 5 are huge partly because they need it to generate artificial gravity. That's at least what was said on the show. As the show progressed, the other ships get smaller because of Minbari artificial gravity tech being shared.
@wingsabre
@wingsabre 7 лет назад
Nope, Earth Alliance ships had artificial gravity, however they were limited to large ships that required spinning sections to generate centripetal force for gravity. Deleen made the point that they would get artificial gravity to allow their ships to be smaller and more maneuverable. So you can argue that there are artificial gravity on those ships, just ones generated by centripetal force. If you look at Earth Alliance ships before the IA was formed, and the Warlock class ship, the size difference is significant. In terms of EA ships, Omega class are fairly small compared to Explorer class, which are supposed to be even bigger because they're gate builder and need to generate gravity for longer missions. In the prequel movies, all the ships had no gravity, but were smaller than the Omega class.

yep - the "Warlock" class was next, {Ivanova got to command one before becoming a general} - Omega destroyer replaced the Hyperion class [although the Hyperion was a "heavy cruiser"]. The rotating area was for crew. Hanger contained 24 starfury [prob less of the Thunderbolt atmospheric variant seen in Severed Dreams- s3e10]. Pulse cannon variant made in addition to the standard Laser cannon one [Apollo at the end of "Endgame"] To see how they fought, look at Severed Dreams, Between the darkness and the light s4e19 or Endgame s4e20.
