Just stumbled on this, very nice vid. I have seen endless people go through that Red light without knowing, I guess they wanted to reduce the road markings as much as they can because it's the Mall. As for the cops, that's how 99% of them are.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 9 лет назад
Hey RJ - Great to have you along, I feel honoured!!! ...and feel slightly vindicated as I don't appear to be the only one that has fallen foul of that particular junction.....and yes I agree, be reasonable and most policemen are reasonable back in my (luckily limited) experience.....love your work man!! All the best - TMF
@alanbrown397

It's not the road markings that's the problem. It's the confusing traffic lights. Someone at TFL needs a chainsaw enema.

the Mall is not a public highway, it is part of a Royal Park which is why there are no zebra crossings or lane markings. The Royal Parks Constabulary are in charge here.

SigneM-Prut#1 What difference does it make if someone crosses a red light crashes into a car and kills all the people in it, compared to a terrorist who kills a few people before he gets shot? Innocent people died in both cases and that's why the police should also care about other dangers than "criminals and terrorists"....

Really had to comment on this video, how refreshing to watch someone clearly enjoying riding about the roads taking in the sights, and then when dealing with the Police for both parties to be so pleasant and respectful to each other. Delightful change from the usual aggression and anti-Police on RU-vid. Keep up the good work and travelling about on your bike, well done sir.

I rode the wrong way up Oxford Street in London many years ago in about 1980 or so when I was heading home. A cop waved me down so I stopped and as soon as he heard my Brummie accent he asked if I was from good old Brum. I said yes and he then directed me the best way to proceed the right way down the road with no drama whatsoever. Ah good times.

I had to laugh. "Was it because of the U'ey?" It's probably not a good idea to mention something the cops may not have even seen before they tell you what they stopped you for. It tends to betray a guilty conscience. ;o) I was a Courier for a city firm based in Old Street for a number of years and the West End and central London were my daily Haunts. I remember well the terror I felt on my first day in that job. Apart from the fears of getting lost, losing a package and getting killed, there was the underlying anxiety of trying to stay out of the hands of the police as I negotiated roads I did not know, in one of the most congested cities in Europe. It still amazes me how pressure causes us to learn very quickly and by the end of the first week in that job, the only tangible fear that remained was trying not to get killed. Like you, I found the cops to be entirely reasonable and I never got a single ticket in six years. A few warnings now and then, but overall they were great and left us alone. They understood we had a job to do that was vital for Britain's trade and the nature of it meant were were forced to do stuff other road users did not have to do and would be stamped on if they did. Though it would be a bad idea to take that for granted, it did give us some leeway. For anyone reading this and planning their first trip into central London by bike or car, especially from abroad, a good tip is to check on a map -- not a GPS -- where you are headed and visualise it in terms of the compass. Are you headed generally North, South, East or West? Once you have that down, work out where you will be travelling in relation to the Thames. If the river is directly behind you, you will be heading North. If to your left, you are heading West and if to your right, you are going East on the North side of the river. Cross the river and keep it behind you and you are going South. Once you have that figured out, you just need to pick out some prominent landmarks along your route and look out for them. One thing we are pretty good at in this country is sign posting stuff. So you should not have too many problems. You will be amazed how fast you will learn what looks impossible to learn if you use this system. Enjoyed the video Bro. Thank you. [Quick edit] Just as an aside and a bit of trivia, do you know the Big Ben prayer? I think it is on a plaque inside the bell tower somewhere. Anyway, it goes like this and in time with the chimes: "All through this hour/ Lord, be my guide/ And by Thy power /No foot shall slide" Clearly a prayer the inhabitants of the Houses of Commons and Lords need to recite more often! Happy Christmas everyone and here's wishing you all a wonderful New Year. Toodles.

genuine officers, know there shit and know not how to fuck someones day up instantly. the light should have been a green arrow like in most other places (the light that you mistakenly thought was your green are sometimes a green arrow pointing left in this case. trouble is tho then and i have seen this that people don't go with the filter as they are waiting for a solid green not a arrow green. Everyone fuckes and littraly reads the wrong light aha)

TheSushiFiend Hi SushiFiend - indeed (as per the other comment from y5jerry below) it was my first time riding in central London and to be fair I didn't pose any risk to the zebra crossing user - but I take your point, and that had I been on a bike test I would have failed. Thanks for watching anyway and pointing out the error of my ways. All the best - TMF.

As someone who grew up in london and spent my weekends trying to escape to the countryside on my bike, I find it quite funny that you’d choose to ride in London, but I suppose it is a novelty if you don’t do it every day! yeah. They "offered advice". Which was the right thing to do in my view as the bloke just made an honest mistake as he's not used to driving in City traffic. Fair play, i'm not and have to be a bit carefull in cities. Oddly enough, a lot of city folk baulk at the idea of tearing down country lanes at 90mph in the pitch black, mirrors brushing the raindrops from the overhanging trees and bike squirrelling over potholes and cowshit.

Having previously lived in Hillingdon and Harrow area for 30+ years I've been on the A40 far too many times and have driven every inch of tarmac you covered in the video. Lights in Trafalgar Square, Mall, etc are a nightmare. Years ago I inadvertently jumped a red light on Trafalgar Square as I reacted to a set that turned green about 20 metres further round the road. I got pulled over, but like you, I found the officers helpful and lenient. As they said to you it's quite common in that area. Shortest way from Buck House to HoP is Birdcage Walk btw and very scenic :)

How cool the Police were so nice! Most of the times a traffic light would have a green arrow, but I guess London's different and confusing. Tourists wandering would be my biggest worry. They just walk straight on to the road and probably have a different view on the 'rules of the road'.

TheMissendenFlyer Cheers, The police get a lot of shit these days, but people forget that the police have to deal with some real fuckheads every day. I'd say 80% of cops are fair and decent people. People post vids where the police are shown to be ignorant of a law or something, but a policeman is not a judge or a solicitor, they don't know the law backwards, they know the basics and have to apply common sense where they have gaps. That's fair enough in my book.

Great video - I used to live in Wendover and always fancied a ride into central London, but my bike went years ago and I now ride a pushbike (carbon fibre road bike), so just a tad out of range. I noticed you went through the red light, but you also went over a pedestrian crossing when there was a pedestrian on it - something I got nicked for 30 years ago on Horseferry Road...… Good luck, though, and stay safe!

Depends what you all mean by "scooter boys." As an ex-cop, now retired and with some health problems, I've been riding a 650 Burgman for 11 years, and equate with what you term "scooter boys" with my term - "Moped Morons!" They are a menace to every road user, because they're usually far too young, too inexperienced, and have no idea of road rules or road sense. The trouble is the law allows them to operate machinery which no parent in their right mind would allow for their son/daughter. I've taken the Burg (or did the Burg take me?) all around the UK & Ireland, France and Belgium, and I've never seen such bad riding as in the UK mainland - and from all classes of bike, and all ages of rider. So, all you guys, when you're having a go at scoots, don't make it a blanket harangue. Some of us experienced scooter boys (and those of us who've been police trained) could probably show you most of you arse-in-air guys how to ride properly! Just a thought, so don't all take it to heart! Happy and safe riding chaps.

2:53 He mentions having his headlights on fullbeam. Yes it most certainly annoys me! I am a bike and car rider and I NEVER ride or drive with high beam on because it dazzles and distracts other road users. If I am in the car and an idiot behind me has their high beam on I simply adjust my mirrors so I am not being distracted by the dazzling light. Now I cannot see you!
