On Christmas Day most of the stores and restaurants were closed in Manhattan. However, there was a dim sum place in Times Square that was open and very clean! I left the itinerary open for the day since I wasn't sure what we could do. The default was a public park such as Central Park. I bet it's beautiful in the Spring and Fall. Unfortunately, most of the trees were bare so it didn't have the same allure. For the sheer density of horse drawn carriages seen around the park, the roads were relatively clean in comparison. A caveat is that for the piles of horse maneuver that occasionally appeared, the pungent odor was strong. The two key spots I wanted to visit in Central Park were Gapstow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace. Both places were packed with people but we managed to take some pretty good pictures! During the evening, we went back out to Bryant Park and grabbed dinner at a nearby restaurant.
The day after Christmas, we started off slow by walking to Madison Square Park and saw that the Flatiron Building is still encased in scaffolding. It was around noon when we walked to Chelsea Market. In my opinion, it was just as or even more crowded than Bryant Park! Maybe it's less congested when the holiday season is over and all the tourists are gone... By the time we finished our meal, it was still early in the day so we walked to Little Island. This is such an incredible park suspended above water! If time permitted, I would have loved to spend time walking through it! The wind began to pick up and I still wanted to see a few more things before calling it a day. We hopped onto the High Line and walked the entirety of the linear park/former railroad from that point down to Hudson Yards. The Vessel is such a beautiful sight in person and the mall is pretty cool too!
I saw the Empire State Building everyday from the hotel but what was the view like from above? It was projected to rain for the majority of the 27th and since the ESB was just a few blocks from our hotel, we went to the top! I'm actually glad we went on such a gloomy day. Why? We were able to see the fog roll in and obstruct some of the high-rises. The clouds and fog made the sight so much more dramatic. Towards dinner, we decided to grab some food without help from any navigation system. It was all fun and games until I realized we were back at Hudson Yards... the exact opposite direction of our hotel! Nevertheless, we enjoyed our rainy evening out and about in NYC.
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!
