In this video, photographer Fred Crissey follows trains on the Chicago & North Western’s “Alco Line” between Winona, Minnesota and Pierre, South Dakota, from 1977 to 1981. Also included are the Plainview, Minnesota and James Valley Junction to Oakes, North Dakota branch lines. This program features Alco locomotive models RS-3, RSD-4, RSD-5, RS-11, RS-32, and C425, along with EMD models GP7, GP9, SD7R, and SD9. Notable locations featured include Winona, Stockton Hill, Rochester, Dodge Center, Owatonna, Waseca, Mankato, New Ulm, Lake Benton, Arlington, Huron, Aberdeen, and Pierre. Fred also visits many of the smaller communities along the route, in addition to numerous scenes captured in the wide open prairie and farmland of Minnesota and South Dakota. The classic ALCo diesels are my favourite diesels! I like the RSD-5! One C&NW RSD-5, #1689, is on display at the Illinois Railway Museum. I saw it in person back in 2016!

I used to operate one of the Chicago & North Western's ultrasound rail test trucks through the 1980s and I can say from my own experience that the line across southern Minnesota to Winona did indeed have light rail. In fact, so light that it was not unusual to find as many as 50 broken rails in one day over two-three miles of trackage tested in one day. This drove the local roadmasters nuts from having to change out so many rails. Consequently, we in the rail testing department really weren't that welcomed when we were assigned this territory of 90-100-pound, mainline rail some going back to being rolled in the early 1890s (yes, eighteen nineties).

Wow! Appreciated or not, you had an incredibly important job. Especially on a segment of track like this with poor rail conditions. You likely prevented countless derailments through your testing. We remember that old rail. Much of it was still in place 15-20 years ago. Thank you for sharing your story.

Great videos! We were just in the New Ulm/Mankato area last Saturday and got a video of a RCPE train going over the Cottonwood River bridge on the southeast side of New Ulm...same one shown at about 54:45 or so in your video.

Remarkable work Chris! Wish I could have experienced the golden age of ALCO diesels before they disappeared, but at least some shortlines still use them in some capacity. So that may be a possibility for me to visit. I shouldn’t be surprised most of these were quite dirty considering how much they smoke, but can’t unnotice it. Sad that all ex CNWs remaining on UP have all been repainted. But thankfully, we do have some units in preservation restored to CNW colors like SD50 7009 which got a partial repaint. Oh, and was that an ALCO switcher without a control cab operating as a DPU in one clip?? Never seen that before!

As a teenage rail fan in the mid 1960's to 1980's it was very common to see CNW and CGW units like these. They were known as Slugs then. Some still had cabs and some had the cabs removed and looked like a B-unit. My understanding was the bodies were filled with concrete for traction and the trucks got their power from main locomotive. I always thought it was cool to see them.

Thank you for the nice comment, Alik. Those Alcos loved to smoke! Their appearance certainly reflected that. Imagine running those units through tunnels! As for the 7009, it’s awesome to see that locomotive running again. We did capture it many years ago on the Wayzata Sub (trailing), but that footage hasn’t been used for anything. The friendly commenter that replied to you appears to have answered your question about the slug. From what we could tell, the slugs were usually paired up with the C425s. The slug that you noticed in the middle of the train was just along for the ride, since it would need electrical power from a controlling locomotive to operate. We appreciate you taking the time to watch the video.
