This is footage of my 100 mile race. Raw and shaky which is ironic as thats how I felt.
An epic race as all 100's are. The North Downs Way 100 mile race organised by Centurion Running starts at Farnham, Surrey and covers 102.9 miles ending at Ashford, Kent.
This is my second time running this so had some good experience from last year and as I train on the North Downs Way no issue with the terrain. Although there isn't loads of elevation, compared to say a mountain race, the course is broken up into small climbs, steps, gates, urbanscapes and overgrown narrow uneven paths with brambles and stinging nettles. It's hard to get a rhythm going and saps concentration.
This time I suffered with a cold and fever so just bad bad timing. For me unless bed ridden you've committed and trained hard to get to this day. So I gave it a go...
Gutted about the shaky footage - I hate go pros - battery life is shite and for some reason the stabilisation didn't work.

Thanks Adam, for taking the time to record and edit this video. It serves as a great reminder of the experience for some and a valuable source of information for those thinking of attempting the race. And well done for managing to complete it in a respectable time with the handicap of a cold!

Thanks for the thanks! I’m trying to get the balance between filming and racing. With some practice I’m sure to improve. I love the editing process and reliving the experience.

Just watched your video and found it very useful for what to expect of the terrain. My wife and I have signed up for the NDW100 this August. Looking forward to an attempt at our first 100. Subscribed and thanks 👍

Will you run it together? Amazing stuff. Tough race but you need to remember that get to the 80 mile mark regroup and move on. I think it’s delting aid station. It’s where people give up. Don’t stay long there. Once you out your on your way to the finish line 🏁 👍👍

@@ultrarunneradam Definitely, always run together. For us it’s the journey rather than the time. Thanks very much for your advice. It’s hard to imagine what we have ahead of us but definitely up for the challenge it will bring.

Very useful video, I used it to learn parts of the course for my 1st NDW 100 attempt last year, unfortunately only made it to Wrotham, but I will be back this year, covid permitting to try again! Thank you for the video :)

Great video and congratulations on your amazing achievement. As the saying goes I cannot fly and I cannot run further than a marathon distance but I did just complete a walk on the North Downs Way from Farnham to Dover (via the Canterbury loop) and know how hilly some of the sections are.

Thanks for the film! Congratulations to a great run :). Beautiful but very scary. I'm up for this year and besides worrying about many other things (wil my body fall apart, all the steep hills, steps, all the stressful cut-offs, will I fall asleep during the night etc.), I fear the cold, especially when you sweat, are tired, walk slowly, sit down etc. You mentioned you were cold. Would you say it was the same weather when you did it is this year? Did you wear extra jumper, gloves during the night? Thanks!

@@ultrarunneradam It was so tough! The hardest race I've ever done! But as always Centurion is a fantastic organisation, and the nature was incredibly beautiful and all the other people so friendly :).

Hi Adam, I am running the NDW 100 again this year (2020). I had a DNF on 2019, got to detling and just called it off, which was a dumb decision as I could have finished and there was nothing majorly wrong with me. Did a bit of soul searching afterwards and wondered if I was made of the right stuff for a 100 miles. Saying that I finished the Spine Challenger just over a month ago, which had a big DNF rate (120 started, 50 finished), so it seems there might be hope for me still. I honestly don't know how the NDW100 will go for me this year, but one thing will be for sure, I will be more experienced then I was in 2019.
@ultrarunneradam
@ultrarunneradam 4 года назад
How long did the spine challenger take you??
@pozzarefds
@pozzarefds 4 года назад
@@ultrarunneradam Nothing to write home about, but around 50 hours and 21st Male. There was not a great deal of athleticism involved, just pure bloody mindedness and being someone who operates a lot better in the cold conditions. The thing with the NDW that year was the heat really washed me out during the day so I was a bit of state come the night.
@pozzarefds
@pozzarefds 4 года назад
oh to add to that, I have the full Spine next year. I just need to be sure I don't take my eye off the ball for the North Downs Way (which I think i did last year, I had it in my mind that it would be an easy race through leafy Surrey, so what could do wrong - well those expectations were what went wrong in hindsight). What's your next big race?
@ultrarunneradam
@ultrarunneradam 4 года назад
Luke A The heat is a killer. Have to go a lot easier in the day and keep salt and electrolyte levels spot on. Just done the arc of attrition - did well 9th. Trained hard and only managed 2 down weeks during the 4 months lead in. That has taken a lot out of me so just starting up again. Utmb pyranees and then October choosing between a100 or a French race. I have spine in my sights - ndw100 is quite fast as well compared to a mountain race
@pozzarefds
@pozzarefds 4 года назад
@@ultrarunneradam Good advise mate. So conserve during the day and then take advantage of the cool evening to move quicker? 9th is brilliant going for the Arc, that is a tough bastard race. I am just building up mileage again now. I plan to get lots of aerobic base in during the summer leading up to August. Last year I kept getting hurt by slotting in speed work days into heavy mileage weeks and my body could not handle it. This year I will be dropping the speed work save just doing hill repeats. I am not scoffing speed work, it has massive benefits, but being an older bloke now I have to manage my ragged body a bit better and 60+ mile weeks with a hard intervals session just kills me :( UTMB Pyranees, wow, sounds great. You should definitely have a pop at the Spine Challenger, judging by how you handled the Arc, you would do well. It' a fantastic even, pricey, but you see why when you get that and see all that is involved.

Hi mate, without any rain or wet conditions on course would a road shoe with decent tread and grip be ok on the NDW100? Taking on my first 100 miler this year at NDW 100 and considering running in the Hoka Clifton, any advice?

Excellent video. well done! Just a quick question from St Martha's church to Reigate Hill, is there any water tap? or anywhere i could top up my water flaks? I would like to do a recce of that section as it seems the NDW100 is still happening. I live near Brighton so I'll have to leave my car in Reigate, catch a train to Chilworth and then run from there. Any advice would be very welcome amigo

Hi Adam Wanted to ask your advice, with 5 weeks out from NDW100 and a very solid training block up untill this point ,do you see any value of doing a 70km - 80km training run as a last big run and then begin a gradual taper? Thanks mate 👍🏻

@@chrisnuttall1371 I will always get a long run at easy pace before a big outing. 6-7 hours on feet but stopping and enjoying. Perhaps a trip away and do an all dayer with friends. 5 weeks out is plenty of time to recover as you should be looking at endurance phase now for next 2-3 weeks. Perhaps 1 week on speed to fine tune if you’ve being doing workouts in your plan. I taper 2 weeks before with a few shorter runs in final week. I don’t believe in total stopping the week before as your recovery from all your training should be very good.
