Democracy Renovation: Philanthropy’s Role in Strengthening Democracy
Speakers: Danielle Allen, Harvard | Kristen Cambell, PACE (moderator) | Crystal Hayling, Libra Foundation Stephen Heintz, Rockefeller Brothers Fund | Sarah Cross, Stand Together
“Our nation is in desperate need of democracy renovation,” writes Harvard political theorist and Washington Post columnist Danielle Allen about the United States - though that is relevant for other global democracies as well. “We need to bring this old house we all share up to date and fit for purpose in the 21st century.” What does “democracy renovation” look like, how is it best accomplished, and what is philanthropy’s role? There are many philanthropically supported efforts to increase civic engagement, combat polarization, and reform democratic processes, but are they effective? Professor Allen posits that true democracy work is not partisan, but when is it possible to “bridge” differences and find common cause, and when isn’t it? This session will feature a thought-provoking talk from Professor Allen followed by an ideologically diverse panel discussion that will explore these and related questions.
