Closing the Racial Wealth Gap
Speakers: Jim Canales, Barr Foundation (moderator) | Lee Pelton, The Boston Foundation | Jesús Gerena, UpTogether | Nwamaka Agbo, Kataly Foundation | Prabal Chakrabarti, Boston Federal Reserve
The stark racial wealth gap in the U.S. is a reflection of centuries of structural racism. It is also an impediment to progress, creating vastly different “starting lines” for individuals based on their race and undermining efforts at equity. How can the gap be closed and what is philanthropy’s role? This panel will examine a collaborative effort, supported by the Boston Foundation and the Barr Foundation, to address this daunting problem within the greater Boston area. What lessons from Boston can be applied more broadly? Why does the racial wealth gap actually have implications for funders across myriad - if not every - programmatic focus? This interactive panel will help leaders reflect on the possibilities for change.
