I think the pandemic opened our eyes to the fact that most work is essential work. Jobs whether "big" or "small" contribute collectively to our society. We called these people our heroes (I truly believe they are, we just don't treat them as such honestly) and were so "thankful" that they were risking their lives to provide for us during a crisis. These heroes are likely working simply because they have to and it's shitty that before, during, and now "post" COVID these people are not getting paid well enough to provide basic necessities for their families. On the other hand, healthcare in America is privatized which already makes it extremely expensive but even when, or rather if, offered by employers is still not enough for most people to get the care they deserve. Kelloggs employees are not the only ones suffering from the cut throat symptoms of capitalism, but I admire the union's will to fight. The USA was founded on rebellion. I agree that this experience is not unique. In fact, there is an anticipated nationwide labor strike this month. It's clear that not only Kelloggs workers but ALL WORKERS are tired of the system. The most ideal way to dismantle the oppressive system is by attacking the system itself. That said, striking against one single cereal company won't fix everything, but it is one step towards a better future. Because it's the small pushes that add up to one big push. Realistically, there would be a lot of politics involved but we have the right to strike, protest, vote, etc. We have the right to be heard!!! There are so many layers to get into and many aspects to inspect and debate, but this is generally how I feel off the jump.

Wow, fantastic contribution to the conversation Angelique! I couldn't agree more that "essential" workers are not compensated proportionately for the role they facilitate for the rest of us. The people on the front lines of food production, healthcare and practically any job that has the worker face to face with the public needs to be respected for the service they provide and the inherent risk they are taking just showing up to work. I think we are on the verge of a big revolution not just nationwide but globally. It's time to fight the system and rebalance the chips on the table.

How they didn't strike over the cancellation of Rice Krispies Treats cereal is what I wanna know... All joking aside though, companies are worse than ever with the greed and putting profits over their employees basic needs. Good on them for putting their foot down.

Honestly your joke was one I thought about immediately when I heard the strike. I actually am Photoshopping something to that effect tomorrow.

Canada's plant is running non stop how about 7 - 12h shifts with one day off in the middle every month. 7 - 12h shifts in a row every month.

That's a great explanation and easy to understand. I'm all for fair pay/wages and I hate it when the ties make their huge bonuses. Do you know how many offers were rejected by the union? I don't know, I'm asking.

I'm from Michigan (same state as Kellogg's HQ in Battle Creek), and TBH I don't care if my cereal is produced in Mexico or the US. Wherever it can be done at the right balance of cost/quality. American (and all) workers can only command higher wages with greater productivity; otherwise the jobs will go to lower cost approaches - automation, cheaper states (i.e. Tennessee, Alabama), or Mexico.

As far as I know this strike is about not getting paid less for the same amount of work or more work. Kellogg's is trying to decrease benefits of some of their employees. They employees want their benefits to stay. I think if everyone had your attitude we'd practically lose every job in the US to lower wage workers in foreign countries. The country needs to produce its own food so we won't lose acces to the food if tensions between states arise. Thanks for your opinion on this. I think it's great to have differing views so I think about other perspectives.

@@CerealSnob Aren't benefits just another element of an employee's total net compensation? Regarding supporting local/domestic jobs vs. offshoring - I understand your sentiments but let me ask you to examine your own buying habits. Do you always buy local? What kind of car do you drive? Where were your clothes made? The reality is, most consumers buy the right product based on the price/quality tradeoff, regardless of where it's made.

@Hooknose Shylock Noted. My use of "higher" didn't mean to imply that the US Kelloggs workers are asking for a raise. Rather, for an American worker to justify earning wages that are higher than foreign workers, American workers need to deliver higher productivity, quality or other benefits.
