A guy at work had pretty much this mindset and went on a ramp with goods the wrong way....the forklift felt down from the ramp almost killing him, but hes fine now, after 2 broken legs. Confidence =/= skill. Drink some beer see how much confidence you get after that....
i did mine in few hours. I’m confident I don’t know everything yet. Which is good because I don’t ever want to become displacement. I don’t want to get too cocky. Spending any more money on “school” won’t help. Because really you just need to know and under the basics. Once you got the basics it’s just about getting real experiences. All new jobs should have a training supervisor regardless of certification. Unless they already know you’re a veteran.
I never had any formal training to drive a forklift. I told them in the interview I'd never used a forklift and they said we'll train you its fine. Team lead spent an hour or so with me driving through some cones and moving around empty pallets and after all that just said take it as slow as you need to until you get comfortable. After a week I pretty much had it down. Its just as easy if not easier than driving a car you really don't need paid training from some company.
I work at Estes Express Lines. Literally my first day I hopped on a forklift. I’m 19 btw I started when I was 18 in the summer. & just getting through college. & yes you must be careful! We all drive forklifts on the dock. It’s crazy to think about it rn lol
I had never been on a forklift in my life 9 years ago. The boss tested me by asking me to take a pallet with 1600 pounds off the 16 foot shelf, drive it backwards to the end of a 1/2 mile warehouse, drive forewords back to her and put the 1600 pound pallet back on the 16 foot shelf. It went flawlessly and I am still working there. :)
Alot has changed in 9 years but even then, if there was an accident at that time, there would of been serious repercussions for that company and your boss. Always get proper training and certification. Stay safe!
I was the boss's personal secretary for 2 years prior and she trusted me completely with all the operations of the company. She said I was too big for my pants and bet me she could find something that would be impossible for me to do. The next day, she called me down to the warehouse. "There it is." she said while pointing at the forklift. Now you know the rest of the story. I won the bet too. :)
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vGHcw3hf1Us.html Nice lady - one hour on job - laughing and doing forklift job. I agree we all have to be careful. Today: "the zombies" were tough to avoid. :)
Classes/courses? Wow! It doesn't take rocket science to understand how to operate a forklift, as long as you use common sense (which may not be as common as I think), always put safety first at all times and take things slowly (at least at first, if not always). I got tested and certified the first time they offered it, and I am still certified and operating after 2 years.
@@NoFlawBenji if you are looking to make more money, then I would say welding. Welding tends to make more money than forklifting. If you just want a job right now, then go forklifting. Check the job postings. As long as you have graduated high school, you should be able to get a forklift job rather easier than a welder job. Usually the employer can and does train you on a forklift. They could also train you for welding, but you might want to get your welding certificate/diploma from a technical/community college before you apply. That should make it easier to get a job. Both jobs should be rather easy to get, especially with a good attitude and work ethic. Good luck.
@ chris gast That's the government for you, buddy! They try to make things as complex and convoluted as possible. As a tour bus/highway motorcoach driver I hold a Class 2 CDL here in Canada (That's a class B in the US I think?), and you should see how convoluted the rules and regulations are for the National Safety Code pertaining to on-duty/off-duty hours. When I was going to CDL school it took my instructor a good two years before he could confidently work the electronic logs and have a good grasp at what he was doing.
This forklift licensing company told me that they don't have a facility for me to train in. In order for them to start the training, I need to let my employers know if I could use their facility so I could do the training there for my external forklift license. It's so awkward because that's where I get my internal license from, and if they find out that I'm getting an external license then the next question that will certainly come into their mind would be; Why are you getting an external forklift license? Are you looking for another job? From here, they will soon find a replacement for you. You get your license but you lose your current job. This could be a possible scenario. What are your thoughts?
The certificate provided by any training provider can help the job seeking process. But no matter if you have an internal/external certificate, the employer still has the responsibility to train you. Certification (not license) is more of a proof of completion than a certification. The employer needs to prove you were trained to be safe in their environment and on their equipment.
I’m currently in the Marines and I plan to get out in a year and a half. I would like to do forklifting as a job once I get out, but I’ve never operated one. Do some companies send you to a course or maybe on-the-job training kind of deal? I’ve got a wife and plan on buying some land to build a house. I’ve heard forklifting can pay well and they’re always needed.
Garrison Gregg yes, forklifting jobs can pay very well but don’t expect that pay as a rookie driver. I don’t know where you live but in a good rookie warehousing job, expect to make around 10-12 an hour to start. If a company has a safety coordinator, odds are that would be the guy that would give you the test and DON’T fall for the forklift schooling scams out there. Every company can certify you without the need of some schooling. So if the supervisor is a good one, he/she will usually baby step you on the machines. Give you a few weeks of practice and doing very minor jobs while you’re learning the machine and then you’ll get tested once they feel you’re comfortable on the machine.
@@josh24441 Awesome man, thanks for the information. When my enlistment starts coming to a close I’ll look into some companies to see if I could get on-the-job training.
Garrison Gregg and also be aware that there are some scummy warehouses and agencies that hire rookies and they’ll give you some bullshit about in order to get hired you’ll have to take a “special course and test” and they’ll charge you like 50 bucks for it. If that ever happens, just simply get up and walk out. That’s an absolute bullshit scam. It’s a scummy scam what agencies do to try to make extra money. It gives us real drivers, like me that’s been doing this for almost 20 years, a bad name.
@@josh24441 Damn, yeah I’ll keep that in mind brother. My wife just told me that she is pregnant, I would hate to get on somewhere with shitty people like that fall for the scam to waste finances. I appreciate all the information brother, keep on keeping on.
We actually do the training on site or give your company the tools to certify their employees. Most companies don't have their own program. They use ours to help
I’m taking a class at my local food bank paid by the city- it’s 6 weeks and I’m also learning the EPJ, scissor life, and reach truck. It cost 2,200 but I’ll be certified with actual working experience. Also this is there 6th class and I’m the first girl to take it.
In South Africa, it's a 5-day course for beginners and if you are deemed incompetent after 5 days man the instructor is gonna fail you for sure. one day renewal course every two years, if you fail to renew your license after three months of your renewal date then you have to do the beginners course over again no matter how experienced you are.
False I took the certification class and operated a forklift for 3 hours and now I’m moving around $100K+ and more big ass 5th wheels it’s easy just be slow a cautious
I operate a forklift in a huge freezer warehouse. The forklift test took 10 minutes. I have about 20 years of experience with a forklift. So if a person doesn't have experience they can cause catastrophic accidents including loss of life.
My forklift certification was my shop supervisor kicking an empty pallet 3 feet to one side and asking me to move it back. As soon as I started moving, he turned around and was talking to his buddy not paying attention. Looked back and I had moved the pallet. He said I passed and I got off the tiny warehouse forklift and onto a 36,000 lb capacity shipping container forklift.
That is so true it was my first time driving a forklift. And I got yelled at because I don't know how operate the forklift properly. I only got 2 hours hands on and four hours theory. I thaught I was worthless and a waste little I didn't know you need 8 hours out of training per truck. Maybe if got that I would have been successful . Questions does lift operates in Toronto Canada?
I’m curious I have experience with forklifts but I want to be a forklift driver only even tho I’m experience do i still need to to be certified to be a forklift driver or is having the experience enough.
Hi There, you still need to have PROOF of training. So to answer your question, yes you need to go through a recertification program that shows you completed your Theory and practical driving test.
i have my forklift licence is a 3 day test in australia and I have been driving forklift over 10 years and yes we need a photo licence to operate it, and I have a Bobcat licence on the same card
I am interested in becoming a forklift operator, but everywhere i called they're only offering online certification. Where can i get physical training.
Am from Nigeria but am folks lift operator how can I get a job from Pennsylvania and I came from Poor family I don't want to look like others Nigerian what a lot of scammers I want to use my skill to satisfy my family how can you help me with collection .
Hi Ryan, If you are new, the best way is to find a great training centre to start learning! If you are in the Toronto Area, please contact us www.lifttraining.com. If not, find a great training provider near you that gives Days of training, not hours!
What if i know how to drive forklifts well and i just need a certificate so i can get a better job, then would a cheap short class do since it wont effect me😁
What a dumb question! YOU TAKE THE SHORT CLASS, IDIOT!!!! It was even mentioned in this video that some schools offer short classes, and common sense *should* tell you that if you already *know* how to operate a forklift well, then you don't *need* all of those extra hours of theory and training! And here you are asking a question that was already addressed in the video! Good Lord! To be honest I don't think operating heavy machinery is for you.
Where does it say in CSA B335-15 that 8 hours of each are required, specific index number please? I have the document open and can't find that reference. Thanks
Brother i have experience 4 year but no have certificate.i want forklift license. How to i contact & where your training Center. & total Cost how much. Please tell me.
