Certified Tile Installer (CTI) Program CTEF (Ceramic Tile Education Foundation) launched the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) program in 2008 to provide a means for good, knowledgeable tile installers to verify their skills and promote themselves to potential clients and employers. It provides consumers with a mechanism for identifying the level of proficiency of prospective tile installers and, it encourages them to use only the best-qualified installers, ensuring that their tile project is installed correctly from the beginning, and looks beautiful for years to come. The Certified Tile Installer (CTI) program is a comprehensive testing of the skills and knowledge of experienced tile installers which includes a multiple-choice exam and a hands-on test. Both are based on current industry standards and best practices for producing a sound installation that exhibits good workmanship. The tests, therefore, require that both the observable and non-observable characteristics of a finished installation are executed properly. The hands-on test allows CTEF evaluators to verify that an applicant has the skills to deliver an installation that meets industry performance and workmanship standards. Installers must demonstrate their ability to execute a complex layout and proper installation of: vapor retarder membrane, backer board, tile (walls and floors), cementitious grout, and flexible sealant (caulk). For each installation material, the applicant is scored on the various aspects of workmanship relevant to producing an installation that will endure use and satisfy the discriminating client.

Other than knowledge,the biggest difference between installers is finding one that enjoys doing it opposed to the ones that look at it as just a job. Laying tile is hard work and if you don’t enjoy it, it shows. Great job Sal!

You said it right Mr. DiBlasi, that very few people know: "Tile installation is NOT easy. There is misconception that anybody can install tiles." I consider myself a great tile setter. My clients call me a artist when they see me working. However I still watch your videos, because I believe in continuous education and I learned a lot from a Master Tile Setter like you,. Thank God they are finally doing this I did a 4 year apprenticeship in the bricklayers union school and gone to the state of Maine for marble school then I had to have 2 tile setter sign off that I know what I'm doing before I get my tile card, we have these bozo running around think they know what they are doing because they own a pickup truck and a margin trial thinking there a tile setter just butchering up our trade. Thanks Sal for pointing this out to the people out there to hire someone that is (certified) sorry for the rant just hate having people out there that's ruining our trade.

Was taught by a really old mud slinger, everything else I know was by being self taught through consuming as much written material I could lay my hands on. I would in turn incorporate that knowledge into what I did. Having a little OCD helped. Common sense and patience, yeah buddy. Before being stung hard by ansi 118.6 (think that's it) I had no idea what it was. I had no idea there was such a thing as an expiration date on all Portland products. Mapei shipped a special order grout that expired in shipping. Customer was an engineer, read the code and refused the finished job. Love your approach.

Hi Sal, interesting video. (Rant ahead!) Here in the UK we have the CSCS scheme. In order to work on construction sites you need the CSCS card in order to prove your skill level and that you have the relevant qualifications to do the job you say you can do. I recently worked with a 'tiler' who only 2 weeks before was a lorry driver. He went to a tiling training centre for an intensive 1 week tiling course. He got his CSCS card. Ive been tiling 34 years and learnt my trade alongside seasoned very talented craftsmen. I do not have a CSCS card. Why? In orderfor me to get a card i would have to go to one of these 'training centres', for one day, tile a wall very similar to the walls in this video (the type of tiling that in the real world you just would not get), pay £1300+ VAT and get my card. You used to be able to get a 'time served' qualification but this was withdrawn, my guess is because those cards were free. I work alongside some very capable, very talented middle aged craftesmen who also do not have the card and like me, refuse to pay for it. The scheme is looked upon as a scam. Now, on paper, the ex lorry driver is more qualified than me, but having worked with him for 5 days and seen his work, i know who i would prefer in my house. Ex lorry driver with 4 weeks experience Vs 34 years time served. Love your vids Sal.

Not the same here with this test, it is entirely voluntary and you need to pass a written test based on standards and methods, and a hands on which is very difficult. You need to have at least 2 years installation experience to take the test. I have been to several and I can tell you first hand this test is no joke.

DiBlasi sir: Does your PDF of tile installation guidelines for $1 tile installation around toilet base? Also, I have a general question about mortar thickness and the depth of tile installation. Basically, let's assume I'm installing an 8 inch x 8 inch tile that's about 0.4 inches thick. I believe you can install with mortar using a 1/4 x 1/4 square notched trowel. My question is how high will the tile sit when I firmly depress it into the mortar ensuring "95%" (which to me means basically complete) coverage? I'll be setting tile on the 1/8" kerdi Ditra, most likely using unmodified thin set. I've never come across this type of information and I'm not sure if it's even relevant to consider. I'll be purchasing that pdf, but was hoping you may know a general answer for that. Should I basically just consider it the thickness of the tile plus the thickness of the 1/8 Ditra plus a couple 32nds? Thank you, sir?

Hi Sal, can you elaborate on Expansion Joints. is leaving a quarter inch gap between wall and floor tile enough or should there be a expansion joint in the center of the floor in the grout line?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 7 лет назад
There should always be an expansion space at the perimeter of the area and where tile abuts dissimilar materials and immovable objects. Interior floors should have an expansion joint every 20 to 25 feet in both directions and exterior or exposed areas every 8 to 12 feet, note that an interior area can be classified as an exposed area if it is subjected to direct sunlight or other factors that could cause the area to expand and contract more than a typical interior space.

Experience come with rather, than doing a test. All depends on the day mate! Someone who is dyslexic or someone who has anxiety test, they could perform badly just like kids on exams. Just because you pass a test on the day. Dyslexic tilers can be very practical as a tiler but not very good on the written side. People in England don't have the money for a tiler to rip out walls as you often do, they want things done on the cheap. Most can't even spot bad cuts or equidistant tiling. Most of the tile suppliers in my city don't even stock Schluter as it's a special order...Everything is done on the cheap and cheerful. Anyone can tile on a flat substrate... Tiling in an old Cobb mud built home or even granite walls that are no way flat, you're held back by building control in England. Like I said this test is pointless. The skill is dealing with a wall or floor that is not completely flat, when you're confined by building regs that don't allow for such systems to be incorporated into listed building. Just because I achieved a qualification I was told that I would learn more over the years, as I have. You're always learning new things.Also pointless putting down schluter underfloor heating wire as you can't leave even a bit of clothing down by accident as the system will break. Also the cement that holds the heat mate cracks. A video of this can be seen on my channel. Schluter the best cracked adhesive on show at my local tile store. Or is that what they coin as de-coupling!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nV8CG-eVSnI.html. I'm always open to debate , but not sarcastic remarks.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 5 лет назад
No sarcastic remarks intended, just trying to make a point that in every trade there are things you should do, and things you shouldn't, if you don't know what the standards are, then you will do things that can compromise the install, regardless of the condition of the substrate. Having knowledge that has been tested, and developed into methids that will insure a long lasting trouble free outcome, is what is being tested. You certainly are entitled to your opinion, and to do things the way you have always done them. Experience is certainly of great importance, but knowing that the methods you employ are correct and endorsed by an independent entity whose sole function is to improve the industry and promote proper standards and methods that have been tested refined and developed, is a good thing.

If you know the basic steps, this really isn't rocket science.

@@TheBanjoShowOfficialvery good question. What’s taught are the proper methods. Some believe it’s as simple as glue a square to a wall; that’s untrue. There’s substrate prep (using the right materials), waterproofing (includes prep, skimming, taping, applying waterproof unless the board already is), being square and plum knowingly you will be installing tile to it, then layout (calls for measuring, what to cut with, making sure you have enough for waste), managing your time, mixing the Thinset properly with correct ratio, understanding how much to mix so it doesn’t flash on you while in the bucket…📑it’s not rocket science. But engineers made it this way for a reason.

funny thing about bad tile installers is that you think you did a great job, but the homeowner finds out what crap work you did two years later when it cracks or leaks. this test makes you realize your standards are below par.

They make them install a small 25sq ft with no mosaics or natural stone and think their ready to install commercial and residential? I really did some certified tile installers work and put them on blast on John bridge forum and then my topic got erased with all the proof from his invoice to home Owner to his 💩 work. But not all CTI are bad but not all are good either it takes hands on multiple jobs for years not just 25sq ft and a hand book. Smh.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 5 лет назад
The test is to show that the installer understands and knows what the standards are not to determine if they are ready to install. Two year minimum in the field is required to take the test. No test is perfect, no certification will guarantee that the person doing the work, whatever it may be, will not screw up. Having a CTI install your tile will at the very least give you a better chance of having it done right. Sorry for your trouble, Certification is a step to make the industry better, more work needs to be done. I personally know quite a few CTIs and they are all great installers.

Sal DiBlasi What about what I have walls out of square in old English cottages, floors made on 200 year old boards where you can't used boards to higher the height of floors and listed buildings that you can't install certain systems. Old properties on Dartmoor in England, totally different kettle of fish over here in England.

I am sure it is, and your methods and standards are probably different in many regards, that does not change the fact that someone versed in the TCNA, ANSI methods and standards, and that has been tested to prove they know them, both written and hands on, will probably do a better job than someone just guessing at it or doing it the way they were taught by someone that never had a clue to begin with.
