Cervical vertigo, also called cervicogenic dizziness, is a feeling of disorientation or unsteadiness caused by a neck injury or health condition that affects the neck. Here are some neck stretches & exercises that can help provide relief. Buy a worksheet with these Cervical Vertigo Stretches & Exercises at www.askdoctorjo.com/cervical-...
Starting off with some simple movements like cervical rotation and cervical sidebend are great to warm up the muscles around the neck and shoulder area.
Moving on to some stretches like upper trapezius stretch and levator scapulae stretch will help take pressure off the nerves in the neck area that might be causing vertigo symptoms.
Next, some simple isometric exercises like cervical sidebend and rotation are great ways to activate the muscles, but not make big movements that might cause pain or reproduce symptoms.
Finally chin tucks and scapular squeezes not only help loosen up the muscles in the neck and shoulder area, but they also help reset the muscles that are often overstretched from bad posture.

Thank you for this video. I was in the Urgent Care New Year's Day 2022 at Kaiser Permanente due to dealing with Vertigo, tinnitus, and dizziness for years. I had a CT and an MRI of my brain and they both came back fine. I saw an Audiologist and an ENT specialist. My hearing was fine but the audiologist saw some vertigo in the movement exercise of my eyes. Neither the Audiologist and the ENT specialist were helpful. My Primary Care Physician gave me a referral to see a physical therapist at Kaiser Permanente. It was the physical therapist that figured out what type of vertigo I had which is cervical vertigo in my neck and spine. He said it can come from poor posture over the years which is true because I would watch television sitting on the couch slumped over. I have never been able to sleep on pillows because I always wake up with with neck pain, a headache, and sometimes vertigo. The physical therapist gave me some home exercises to do using a rubber type stretch band. Some days I feel that I am almost 90% back to normal and there are days, I am back to 45 or 50%. Having cervical vertigo has affected my life because I am afraid to drive far distances or leave my home in fear of having an attack. As of this morning, I will start doing the relief stretches & exercises regularly in your video. Thank God, I have a 4K Smart Television with RU-vid. I have already programmed this video on my 4K Smart Television in RU-vid. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas.

The doctors like to do that now. Lol I was diagnosed with anxiety when I was in the military. Over a decade later and no new diagnosis of it (have seen several psychologists). Yet they won't remove it. Good excuse for them to say it's all in my head. I went to the ER one night because I felt I was so miserable from not being able to sleep. I was hoping I could get sleep meds to at least sleep that night so my husband wouldn't have to miss work taking care of our l.o. The doctor mentioned anxiety, told me I have stress so I must have anxiety. They only prescribed me anxiety meds. Tried at the hospital. I felt zero difference the whole night, they sent me home with it. One of the most common side effects was insomnia. So no. Lol Be careful out there! A lot of cluster B medical professionals

Thank you this is excellent!!! I have motion sickness my whole and then in my 40s became vertigo. Last couple years frequent attacks. Diagnosed Cervical stenosis. Going to chiro regularly sometimes helps sometimes not. He does gentle movements but minimal treatment. And he never showed me these exercises 😠Also do therapeutic massage once a month. I m in a computer screen all day, run and lift weights everyday. It has affected every part of my life. Cannot go on any type of boat, cannot fly anymore, no passenger car rides, no events with flashing lights, no dancing due to spinning. Very upsetting. Also under enormous stress from taking care of 90 year old bed ridden mom and working digital design job 40 hour weeks etc etc. no one else I know suffers from this and some think it’s conjured up all in my head…actually it’s in my neck and spine. Have gone through so much $$$ over the years trying to find something to help. Most doctors don’t know anything in regards to this. The only thing that somewhat helps is forcing myself to go out and run or drive. Forces my eyes to focus…? Anyway I just did these exercises and seems to be helping with this latest attack. Thank you so much and I will continue to follow ur channel!!!❤

Hey Jo, thanks for the video!! This is super informative and will start these exercises as soon as possible. Can I ask your advice? I’m having dizzy spells and cold sweats when I over exert in any form of exercise or even something simple like moving my head too quickly, I become dizzy with cold sweats, pins and needles and after it’s passed 10-15 mins I’m zapped of energy. After speaking to doctors they cannot find anything which is strange. The only thing they have picked up is bad wear and tear on my neck so the likely answer is cervical vertigo. Any hints or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

This happens to me randomly and has become more frequently over the last year or two. My neurologist has never heard of cervicogenic, dizziness or cervical vertigo. So she blows it off. Which makes me lose all faith and her knowledge, even though she is the busiest neurologist in town. I don’t expect everybody to know everything as I am a nurse and there’s just too much medically to be an expert on. But I do expect for my neurologist to look into something she doesn’t know about and still try to help me. Unfortunately, paying for health insurance every month still means that I’m going to RU-vid to try and find my own answers and treatment. Thank you for sharing the stretches. I am desperate.

It seems like I slept in a pretty bad position and it gave me a stiff neck for three weeks. Suddenly on a day I got the imbalance thing. I was upset and confused. Felt similar to when you’re getting drunk. Anyway, my solution was doing the stretches on this video and some others. I’d do it 2 to 3 times a day. I also did epley maneuver just in case my problem was inside my ears. I also started sleeping facing upwards without a pillow, since it’s said that it’s the best position for your spine. (Gotta say, body feels much more rested) And finally, I developed a firm and positive attitude to heal and become perfectly balanced and healthy, through intentional prayer and affirmations. Which one cured me? Maybe they all did. I was good after 4 days of my first symptoms.

I'm wondering the same. I've had neck issues for years with parts of my neck that are bad (showed on CT and Xrays). My neuro thinks it's either an inner ear issue (BPPV) OR vestibular migraine w/or without headache. It's so bad no that it happens when laying down. Feels like I'm falling. Awful. The epley maneuver hurt my neck both times, didn't help much (maybe a little with balance), so I'm trying these. I hope she sees our comments and responds. 🙏 I also get these awful "head jolts" that comes out of the blue and only lasts for a split second. Don't know if it's related? Or what they are? MRI's and cardio workup, etc all came back fine. I'm at the end of my rope.

@@GenXer333 Don’t count on your neuro, its not their area unless MRI picks up tumor or vertebrae compressing a nerve. Get Primary Dr to give referral to a Vestibular Physical Therapist to guide you in these exercises. Your neck injuries have weakened your bones ability for good posture. Hi, thanks for your useful videos. I have had what i describe as lightheadness for years, doctors find nothing wrong. I have a lot of neck tension so i am hoping it all comes from that. Part of the problem i find is describing this strange feeling. I really need to commit to a good daily stretching routine i think and see if it helps. Can physiotherapy really help? Any advice is much appreciated

You're welcome. It really just depends on what is causing it, but in general, yes, it can often help.

Thanks so much for reply, how often do you recommend doing the stretches and does it often take some months to start helping. I guess I wonder if I just haven't committed to long enough and strict enough routine. I've always tried various things but hit and miss and not consistent. Frustrating thing is in UK seems to be very little specialist on this, most doctors look at you as if this isn't a thing. Thanks again

You're welcome. It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day. It can. Some people start seeing some results pretty quickly, but it often takes a few months of being consistent for any long term results.

Are cervical spondylosis and cervical vertigo the same thing?
@AskDoctorJo

They are not the same. Cervical spondylosis can cause cervical vertigo, but other things can cause it as well.

Can you have cervical vertigo without any pain in your neck? I have this constant feeling like I’m swaying but I don’t have any ear problems and I have really bad posture and scoliosis

Hi, I have scoliosis too. I had the same swaying/rocking feeling, went to my physiotherapist and she started my treatment and gave me a medicine for it. It went away in about 3-4 days. Now I feel it’s coming on again so will try these stretches! Hope this helped :)

I’ve had cervical vertigo for 2 1/2 years. I guess I had a fall and my head went all the way back and I recently had a laminectomy done of the thoracic spine because I had a cyst pushing on my spinal cord, so I don’t know if that’s the reason why I have vertigo, but I just got operated three weeks ago but I’m still dizzy. I don’t know if it’s making me dizzy or if the neck is something different I’m so tired of it already 2 1/2 years.

I feel for you :( I've been dealing with vertigo and balance issues for 10 months. I've been to the ENT and was on medication that didnt work. 3 different ear tests. I've done balance therapy. I've had neck therapy with acupuncture. Helped for a bit and it came back. Had an MRI of the brain that came back ok. Now being sent to a neurologist. I've done everything my primary doctor and Ent doctor have asked me to do. Now another specialist on the list. It's exhausting. I just want answers. So I'm here looking for other exercises to try. I hope you get answers also.🙏🏼

Well, they’re telling me that it could be due to the wisdom teeth that I had took it out and it can also be that I had whiplash many years ago sometimes when you fall or get in a car accident, you won’t feel nothing for many many years and that can happen and it could also be your nerves because my ear hurts so much and they told me that my ears are fine, so it Hass to be Nerve related because either you have whiplash or you have cervical vertigo but they’re also telling me that I have Hashimoto syndrome and the thyroid so look up all of these things when you go to the doctor ask if you have cervical vertigo ask him if you have Hashimoto syndrome and also they’re telling me I can have a vitamin D deficiency as well I’ve been in and out of hospitals for 2 1/2 years. My arms are so scarred up when I get blood taken out they say my arms are like rubber bands plus when you go to menopause it send a trigger to everything else to your ear pain to your jaw to your vertigo palpitations I didn’t so none of these toes started going to menopause but God bless you. I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on I don’t wanna give up. God bless you.

I've normal tinnitus and typical vertigo typically my eyes are spinning, as an MD showed my ex, learning Epley maneuver. I've seen and ENT an audiologist. However, just divorced and alone 1-mo, I'm getting this weird right cervical at the occipital ridge vertigo. I'm very much arthritic with degenerative joint disease in my entire C, T, L-S spine. Lately if I look up, the room is spinning and if I just move a little bit or too fast getting up from a seated position, I have to grab the sofa. I can put my hand on the spot right under my skull to the right of my C-spine. I'm a retired massage therapist; was trying to hang some lights and fell off my 4' ladder this morning. Thankfully it was positioned right next to my lazy boy or I would've fell on the floor; pretty significant. Neck has kept me from driving last 3 days but I need to get out before the wknd. Thank you for your video. I tried your exercises; pray it's not an inner mid-ear thing with crystals off cuz I can't seem to get that fixed alone; even in my sleep when I roll over to the right, suddenly the bed is spinning and wow really severe! Never had it like this before. I'm sure it has everything to do with tense muscles after an abusive ex has finally left my home. I'm thankful I found your video. Stay healthy! My neck feels less tense doing just your those little bit of exercises but still dizzy. 🥴 Being careful. 🙏

Several of these are good reminders, my Physical Therapist recommended many of these for my bulging discs and migraines! The Isometric one was new to me! Oddly enough when I get some headaches I instinctually feel pushing similar to that helps a little. I never related it to my neck! But makes sense. Also was surprised when physical therapist once asked me if I massage the muscles on the lower back of my skull. I never thought to!

@@aprilragsdell2846 same here. I’ve been dealing with this for 4 1/2 years. I assumed It was from whiplash after skiing all day I noticed it about 3 weeks after. Hi Doctor Jo, I have been dealing with dizziness for a very long time. It always gives me the sensation of swaying and sometimes I am completely shaken off by the sensation. It comes with or without warning. But nowadays I have been having spasm over my neck behind my skull (mainly occipital region) along with throbbing with or without pain). I get dizzy when I lay down and when I wake up in the morning. I have seen a lot of specialist but none of them seem to diagnose it correctly 🥹. I am still suffering. I would love to know your opinion and I would love some suggestions as well.

Unfortunately, I don't know since i can't evaluate you. If there is any way you can go see a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular rehab, they can evaluate you, and help make a program that will work best for you since treatment can be different depending on what exactly is causing the dizziness.
