Flying the Cessna C310Q is fun. Even in hot weather. This is a long video. More than 1 hour in length. This video shows operation of the Cessna C310 from startup to shutdown, excluding some cruise portions, cockpit tour, of a 2.5 hour flight from Raleigh, NC (KRDU) to Palatka, FL (28J) which is near Jacksonville, FL. This video also describes the avionics available in this 1974 C310Q. Watch the entire video or skip to portions of interest. Post comments and ask questions if desired. The flight covers some 514 miles in 2.5 hours using 68 gallons of 100LL (AVGAS). The purpose of this channel is to promote GA use as a viable alternative to commercial air in some missions, of course. Enjoy!!

In the few videos I put up, I always struggle with doing a full flight or just edited 30 min videos. I've got a whole catalog of vfr and ifr flights I'm just too busy to edit and put up (for no one's amusement other than my own, really). But I love it when other pilots put up long videos so maybe I'm just overthinking the whole thing, lol.

Thanks for watching and yes, it is time consuming. This video was on the shelf since May 2018. As a sport pilot, it's interesting to see how the other half live. My cross country experience is limited to flying to the middle of nowhere. I would have to say that talking on the radio is my least favorite part of aviation! The nice thing about flying experimental is cheap avionics. I have ADS-B in/out, weather and AHRS. Since I avoid controlled airspace like the plague, I usually just fly NORDO. I have received much consternation from other pilots for doing so. However, the future of aviation safety will involve ditching the intrusive distraction of conventional comms. The irony is that everyone who has complained is of greater means than me. Why is it I can see them on my display but they can't see me? Or, for that matter, they could just look out the window :-P There are some experimental aircraft which would meet your needs and either give you greater speed or lower operating costs. Have you ever considered building one? I'm A&P certified and I would be unlikely to ever own a normally certificated aircraft because of the financially uneconomical nature of the beast. My ideal commuting aircraft would be something like a Lancair Propjet :-)

Thoroughly enjoyed this flight! Especially now that I'm learning the Milviz 310 in VR in MSFS. Haven't flown a twin IRL yet, but boy what a blessing it is to be a pilot. Under what conditions would you go full forward on the props for landing, or do you keep them set as is?

WOW! You certainly picked a hot one to fly home. I can just imagine how hot the cockpit must have been while you were waiting. It didn't help that foreflight did not file your flight plan. RDU seemed pretty busy with parked aircraft, I guess for college graduation as you mentioned. One quick question, can you send your flight plan from the I Pad directly to the Garmin FMS? Once you have the FP entered, you are good to go! Great Video as always! Have a good one!

I enjoy watch your missions because you are very informative. I'm considering buying a 310q while im getting my PPL. What do you think?
@billinga
@billinga 2 года назад
I must apologize, I missed this comment previously. I think the 310 is an apex GA platform, meaning useful payload, range, speed and all weather capability (kinda). Moving up from the 310 (or Baron 56/58) requires multiple of resources for small increases in payload, speed, range or capability. As for timing, as a new pilot, 40 hours (dual/solo) is sufficient to begin the journey to proficiency. Flying the 310 VFR is a good path to learning/understanding/building skills toward IFR ticket. Maintaining proficiency in flying any twin will require 100+ hours a year initially. Please feel free to connect on gmail at arthur(-dot-)billingsley(--at--)gmail.com for more details. Glad to help!!

Hi, great video, very easy to understand. 2 questions Do you have a 400 a/p n does it work well? Also do you use any kind of alarm / etc for fuel tank changes
@billinga
@billinga 3 года назад
Missed this comment. My apology for the delay. N69846 has an STEC 30A A/P instead of the Cessna 400A. The STEC 30A is course and altitude hold plus capture. I do not use any alarms for tank changes. Usually fly on the mains (tip) and use aux only in longer flights. Aux tanks hold 30 gallons each (total 60 g) and last about 1:20 to empty. Thanks for watching.

I love your videos! I am thinking of buying a 310. Is there an AD on the wing spar?
@billinga
@billinga 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching. This is no wing spar AD for the 310. However there is a standard concern for inspection @ 16,000 hours. This is a general concern across GA aircraft around this flight hour limit. Most GA aircraft have life limits in the 15K-22K timeframe. Anyway, no AD for the 310 wing spar. Love the 310 and would recommend to any pilot whose mission/role supports capabilities. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5mO23NYMt_I.html Stay safe!!

@billinga

Thanks for watching. Upgrades are tricky in legacy aircraft. You can quickly exceed the hull value when doing upgrades and that is a consideration. But safety is the other concern. If your mission or employment of aircraft dictate changes, that is usually the key to decision. Stay safe!!

Thanks for watching and very good attention to detail. I posted this long video for pilots like you who can appreciate the experience and the details. The door seal has a hand-held puffer that inflates the seal. Generally the inflated seal is not needed. In the winter in some climes, the seal is needed to prevent any leaks. Stay safe!!

All you need is an extra 100knots. think you would ever upgrade to a rocket aircraft like a king?
@billinga
@billinga 5 лет назад
Riley Turbostream and other engine mods would give a boost to 220 knots but Vne remains at 240knots. Have to fly high in a turbo mod to get better groundspeed but then you are subject to the vagaries of the jet stream. So cost/benefit wise, a different platform/AC is probably best is that is needed. But that doesn't stop me from thinking about it LOL www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2017/november/pilot/musings-married-to-my-airplane
