Deregulation in the 80's was a double edge sword, brought the end to the large fleets and allowed smaller companies especially non union fleets to expand and take up the slack, this also allowed the Teamsters to loose control, all of this and the mismanagement of the large fleets is why they are all gone today, Yellow Freight is a good example.
I have to correct myself, Road Systems was the trailer manufacturer Consolidated Freightways owned. It changed the name to Road Fleet after the bankruptcy so they could transfer ownership over to Con-Way!
Damn good company but cocky terminal managers and sadistic dispatchers contributed to its demise in 2002 the large terminals and hubs or breakbulks were ok it was those little satellite terminals or PnD depots that swayed from corporate procedures and were run by some arrogant prick about 7 to 18 drivers never made sense with the big facility just 60 or 80 miles down the road very uneffiecent
