You nailed it. Everyone is “shotgunning” the material, and there isn’t congruity. Aviation instruction has become bastardized in quality, mostly due to an entire generation not really giving much back in a genuine fashion - only guarding their own interests. Medicine is heading the same way, unfortunately. There’s a great article in the New England Journal of Medicine that talks about these gaps. Thank you for carrying the torch without burning everything behind you!

Hey Todd, I found these videos super helpful in weeding through the not so important regs for us "soon to be CFI MEI" initial pilots. Looking forward to your video on subpart C, E, F, H! Thanks for making such dry material somewhat entertaining!

Hey Todd, thanks a ton for these - noted for Category/Class discussion, the Rotorcraft also has classes within it: Helicopter & Gyroplane. Thanks for some great videos. Excellent delivery, the humor is much appreciated.

Correct! Making this dry 🌵 bristle consumable is very MUCH needed. Thank you for forging ahead on this.

Mr. Shellnutt, Pardon me, I know this video is a few years old, so you may not see this. However, I have a question regarding 61.73. I’m in Southern California, and while it’s not necessarily common, it’s not terribly uncommon for us to get ex-military (usually Marines) students that were flying MH-53s and such out of Pendleton and Miramar. We had a guy fail his CFI initial last year from this example: “You have a military helicopter pilot coming to you to get his fixed-wing PPL through Commercial ASEL. Walk me through that process.” My checkride is in 5 weeks, and I have the same examiner that proposed that example. It is my understanding that military pilots are entitled to the civilian equivalent ratings that they acquired in the military. So by that logic, a military helicopter pilot would already have his rotor wing PPL, instrument, and Commercial. Therefore, when proposed this example, I believe I am treating this military helicopter pilot as a civilian commercially-licensed rotor wing pilot. Is that correct? CFIs at my flight school have not confirmed this with me, and the CFI applicant who failed from this example took his business elsewhere.

Hi Colin - the situation you posed would only apply if the military pilot completed their Military Competency exam and was issued an FAA pilot certificate (61.73(b)(2)). If that is the case, then they would only need to meet the requirements of 61.63(b). Hopefully, the DPE is not asking you questions about 61.73, as that does not require any intervention from a CFI to make that happen.

One of the best videos on RU-vid right here folks!

HEY TODD, You may want to consider adding/incorporating “CFI” or “certified flight instructor” in your video title. I’ve been searching RU-vid for all kinds of CFI content over the last weeks. Your content is outstanding, but it never came up in any of my searches. I just happened to stumble across it after 2 weeks of watching/listening to CFI RU-vid content. It would be easier for candidates to find your content if it was titled something like “Regulations ##.## -##.## For CFI’s” or something like that. Like I said, your content is great, I wish I would have found it sooner.

On Multi-engine with single-pilot station would that be a Beechcraft with a throw over yoke? Working on getting CFI reinstated! Great videos! Have helped tremendously!

So looking up information in the app is somehow less professional than the book? Of all the things in my life I don't have time for, tabbing out a new book every year is at the top of the list! I've watched just about the whole series, it's been really helpful. Thanks!

I would like it to go over 61.73 because our examiner always gets into scenarios about military pilots coming in for flight training.
@ToddShellnuttCPC
@ToddShellnuttCPC 3 года назад
That is very disturbing that the DPE would ask you about 61.73, because that is what the DPE or FAA needs to see/use to process that persons Military Competency (MilComp) application, which does not require a CFI in the process. If there are other questions that the examiner is asking about military pilots, let me know and I can assist. Here is the FAA's process that is used to backup my response: fsims.faa.gov/wdocs/8900.1/v05%20airman%20cert/chapter%2002/05_002_015rev1.pdf

Say super cub is used to tow gliders, do you need 100 PIC in a super cub? Or is type defined as say a tailwheel when if you had 100 PIC in a Cessna 140 that would count as type
@ToddShellnuttCPC
@ToddShellnuttCPC 5 лет назад
Cooper Stukel a Cub is not a type. It is a Airplane “category” and Single Engine Land “class”. A “Type” means a type rating, which is required if the the aircraft is over 12,500 MGTOW, a jet, or as mandated by the FAA. If you were towing gliders in the Cessna, you can also tow gliders in the Piper.
