That was the strangest ending to a game I’ve seen in a long time lol I can’t believe they called that a single. The MTL player caught the ball in the end zone, granted he didn’t take it out, but that’s because the whistle blew due to the penalty. He wasn’t tackled at all…
That's what should happen. Since there were too many Montreal men (13), as soon as the receiver caught the ball the play was whistle dead. And the Argos took the point only because they refused the penalty.
According to Worthy, he was JUST out of bounds when he caught the ball. Official properly blew the play dead. HAD he managed to stay in-bounds and somehow get the ball out of the end zone, Bede would have gotten the opportunity to try the FG again because of the too many men penalty upcoming.
Correction: After reviewing the rules, for too many men, the ref blows the whistle during the huddle or the formation BEFORE the ball is snapped. However the refs missed the call so they stopped the play AFTER the snap since the play should have never happened in the first place. Since it was a non-play, the refs should have redone the field goal try after giving the Argos the 10 yard penalty, not given the Argos the point on a non-play
I've corrected my post. The play should have been done over after Montreal was docked 10 yards on the penalty, according to the rules. Likely the Argos would have punted for the single so the result would likely not have changed.
A single point. Argos against Montreal. Hilarious. Great game. I must say Bede has to find a way to centre those powerful kicks through the uprights. It's kind of unusual how his kicks curl so much.
I was impressed at the intelligence of both sides, even when the play was over. Both sides gave each other encouragement after a good tackle or good run or pass. It was a very gentlemanly game, the way it should be.
When Worthy (the Alouette that caught the ball) he stepped on the dead-ball line. The play ended at that moment regardless of SteelCom's incorrect interpretation of the rule.
The refs should have done that. They actually missed the too many men call since it's supposed to take place either during the huddle or during the formation before the snap. Since they missed it and allowed the play to continue, they randomly called the play dead when the play was in progress. Still not a problem. Just do the down over after marching off the penalty, except for what followed. The Argos refused the penalty. That should not have happened. Penalties for non-plays are automatically enforced by the refs. And since it was a non-play, the refs shouldn't have allowed the extra point. The correct action was to award the 10 yard penalty and re-do the play.
Let’s not forget that Bede missed three field goals. If Argos want to win in the playoffs they will need Bede to be perfect. Rather than a field goal why not punt it over the end zone and get a single point. No chance of returning it.
