Sonic Chaos review. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Sonic Chaos for the Sega Master System.
Sonic is blue. Fast. And spiny. The blue blur with the 'tude is back in this 8bit 1993 release on the Sega Master System. While the only USA release of this game back in the day was on the Game Gear, Sonic Chaos was released in Europe and other countries on the older Master System after the Genesis/MegaDrive rocked the world. Robotnik has stolen the Red Chaos Emerald, and Sonic the Miles Tails Prower have to get it back and find the other 5 Emeralds. Sonic Chaos is a little easy, but it's still a very impressive example of what 8bit hardware can do. It's not a replacement for say, Sonic 3 on the Genesis, but think of this game as a supplement to the Sonic games you already love.

I can remember the Master system still being sold right up until the Saturn and PSX were released. Towards the end they were about £25 with a game 'built in'

Thank you so much for reviewing a Sonic game without using half of the video comparing it to Mario and talking about the history of the series which includes the monotonous "Sonic has sucked this past decade" or "Sonic didn't transition to 3D well". Thank you for reviewing a game solely on what the game is.

One other crucial bit of context when it came to SMS ports, especially the Game Gear ones later in the system's life: The system was the first real grip a home console had in Europe, that grip finally solidifying w/ the PS One/PSX. When the Genesis arrived, plenty of gamers on a continent built on home computer gaming were content w/ the SMS (or perhaps the 1990 Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles NES bundle) they already had. This is why a good number of later SMS releases were exclusive to the European market.

i got a huge amount of enjoyment out of the fan made game "before the sequel". its gameplay is solid 16bit goodness, with some decent and appropriate cutscenes to instill a story, without any horrible chipmunk dialogue.

Not as beautiful? I honestly was expecting this to be 10x worse. My impression of the Master System was never a good one and this is like a gem, hiding in the dirt.

Also, I've accidentally joined a Brazilian game forum and ended up learning some Brazilian Portuguese. All of them often reminisce about their favorite Master System/ Mega Drive (Genesis here) games. They almost all shrug when you bring up the NES, which I found hilarious. Here it's very much the opposite. Then I read into it and found that they were a HUGE chunk of profits Sega made off of the system. I just think more Sege fanatics should be aware of 'em is all.

I think that I have an explanation as to why this game exists on the Master System. Brazil. Brazil had an unusually large install base for the Master System, which basically allowed Sega to create the Genesis with said profits. When Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared on the Genesis, many Brazilians felt left out (Consoles are VERY expensive over there). So Sega created Sonic The Hedgehog and Chaos as a way to sort give them a taste of the series.

It wasn't just Brazil. The SMS was very popular in Western Europe as well. While the last US game was Sonic 1 (1991), the last European game was Smurfs 2 (1996!).

This might sound strange, but I think that this was a good idea. Just thinking about this sonic game is interesting, and the fact that it's common to turn VG characters of today into 8bit or 16bit, this game would be fun to play now.

Yes, I know that he was big in Europe. My point was to bring attention to Brazil. Don't worry, Europe gets more than enough mentions everywhere. I do know that Brazil was pretty important to Sonic's development and Sega as a whole. Many have no idea.

Looks quite solid. A little bit slow but I can see myself having fun playing this game. With Tails, I can get the limitation of 8 bit. But the graphic was quite phenomenal (in its time).

Sorry, i though you are referring to the entire MS games library. However some of the Sonic games from Game Gear starts as Master System games, in fact Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for MS is a beta version of the GG version

Also if you play as Tails,there are no chaos emeralds to collect,witch makes it a bit easier on beginners.

I had this on the GameGear, and the only way I could beat the game as a kid was with Tails, as he could reach places Sonic could not.

thats the only master system game that i own, its my first game ever! Only complain that i have is that his game had so much slowdowns. i wish some fanmade patch fixed it on emulators.

Oh, yes. Most certainly. I never forget Europe when talking about Sonic. You guys are sort of like the US but backwards. I've ran into a lot of British, German, and Spanish Sonic fanatics. I just felt that most Sega fanatics know that he was always bigger in Europe than in the US. They ALWAYS forget Brazil, though. I'm not even Brazilian, I'm an American Sega fan (a minority here). I just read a lot about Sega's history and run into Brazil very often.

Your juding this release entirely on US sales figures. Sonic Chaos was only released on Master System in Europe due to the much higher sales there. (the only sonic game for the master system we got here was Sonic 1). However this game was released on the GameGear in the US. Tails is described in the GameGear Manual as easy mode. You don't have the ability to obtain Emeralds. But you start with more lives and continues, plus Tails flight allows for more exploration, rings, and lives.

Here it is, it's Sonic 3 but not challenging at all because you can just glide over all the obstacles with Knuckles, nuff said.

This is one of the worse Sonic games on the Master System. Floaty physics and controls, boring levels, inconsistent framerate. Sonic 1 is the only Master System Sonic really worth playing and an overall good Sonic game to date.
