I have seen tons of historians, armorers, reenactors, armor reviewers explaining how to make the 4 in 1 type of chainmail and your method is BY FAR the best, well done!!!

Yes Ballsey, you did very good with the 2-1-2-1-2 thing... The difficultty is to weave those chains together... You may want to look into a video about speedweaving. The gentleman who is explaining his method calls it Raw+1 and works well with the 2-1-2-1-2-1 thing... Also the method of cutting can be less painfull: also a series of video's: look again on youtube for video's with "score and break" in regards to chainmail. Also, (and this is a very handy one) Epic fantasy (Will Strom the castle) has a tutorial made of a little gadget (I cooked up but everyone can fashion) which helps you spin coils, fast, safe and without any coil/mess-ups... regards, Sander.

I like your explanation of the assembling, it helps me whilst I make my own maille pieces.

I think I'm gonna make some Grandmaster Feline armor using this method. Thanks for the info!

My question is, since I am making a sleeve of chain mail, how do I connect the sides of the chain mail rectangle to form a cylinder to put my arm through? Hope the phrasing makes since, and wonderful tutorial! So much easier than I anticipated it on being.

Teach your children the art of war, and present the armour you make as a Coming of Age gift. Simply written on the letter upon receiving it? "Complete my work. Succeed where I failed"

In my opinion, you might find it easier to cut those links with a pair of wire cutters. Those snippers that you have, are tinsnips for cutting tin and sheet metal or for duct work. While you can use this for cutting things like wire, you will destroy a perfectly good pair of can snaps like that.

How about instead of cutting each link. you put another hole at the bottom of your dowel put the bottom of the wire through. Put some masking tape either side of your coiled wire to keep the coil secure and using a dreamer tool with a cutting disk, cut a straight line through the links as if you were using the snips. Hope this works. It seems faster in my head.

I actually did something similar to this. The dremel is slower for individual links honestly, but since it completely saves your hands, in the long run of the project im sure it will be faster. Even if it is slower, the fact that it saves your hands is the important part. The one big downside is that you end up with metal dust everywhere so you need to make sure to do this outside or some place well ventilated.

Dremel alumina cutting wheels get used up and broken in cutting wire coils. For armor use and galvy steel wire I think the bolt cutters cut is sufficient; you have at least five thousand links to cut from the coils. The cuts look like >

My character is a blacksmith who forged her own mail, this is going to be SO helpful for her costume! Do you think aluminum wire would work? She's a lot stronger than I am :x

Aluminum works fine for LARP butted mail. Steel and titanium is really only useful for riveted chain mail. And if you want a less shiny more historical look.

It will take quite a long time to make a funtional piece like a shirt! But if you just put a show on the tv and do some weaving while watching, you'll be done in no time! 😁 I'm so gad it was helpful!!

Is there any way to order a cosplay like the gerault of rivia costume? I am not sure if I have the steady hands to do this.

I'm sure there are a couple of cosplayers you could commission! Or, if you're just worried about the chainmail part, you can always order shirts and adjust it to your needs!

Hey awesome video! I'm planning on making some chain mail for a dark souls cosplay. Is it really heavy to wear? I might make it out of plastic if it's really cumbersome :)

A shirt of mail can typically weigh about 25-30 lbs. For that reason i'm making mine out of 1/2 in pvc pipe.
@jefffriedewald7648
@jefffriedewald7648 7 лет назад
Jon Van Pelt try 16 gauge aluminum wire. you use the same method but its a fraction of the weight. less than 5 lbs for a basic shirt. I'm finishing a 6x1 set right now and I barely notice it when I wear it.

How many rings can you make with one of there coils? And how many rings will it take to make a full shirt?
@w.reidripley1968
@w.reidripley1968 Год назад
But estimate thirty to forty thousand links. With small fine links, fifty.

you didn't hammer flat the ring ends , over lap them, drill and rivet them together LOL My (down pass the hips) hauberk weights 48lbs
