My 2 year and 1 month old chainsaw died on me and I was told that it needed a new piston. For the $20-$25 for the piston kit, I'll give this a shot. Thanks for the great instructions!

This video plus the other video on poulan chainsaw Piston replacement (more detailed) really provides a thorough tutorial...with these two vids, ya can't get it wrong... I threw in a carb rebuild kit since I had the thing tore down anyway..

This is an excellent video to show how the piston is replaced when you have a need to , like low compression

Hello mark great video, but what about the timing of the spark and piston
@woodfinchcrafts7267

Excellent video. My saw is now running (including new cylinder - which was scored). Two additional comments - there is no need to remove the oil pump screw, and it is a lot easier to screw on the rubber carb fitting before putting the cylinder back into the frame. That was never removed in the video, which makes it easy to miss

That sound effect in the beginning of the video led me on a 30 min search of my backyard to find who knocked on my glass backdoor. This video auto-played unknowingly....and caused QUITE a scare. Haha...smh

Before you start run a bore camera in spark plug hole and inspect cly for damage, keep you from having to wait a week for kit. Also it’s fresh on your mind and less likely to remember more

How did you insert the piston into the cylinder without a ring compressor? Also is the bearings attached to the connecting rod still? I took my saw to a repair shop and because of the score it was condemned. It took you 20 minutes to change them. Me probably 2 hours, but repairable. Parts 20-30$, cost to replace, $150. Thanks a heap
@FIXTechGuides
@FIXTechGuides 2 года назад
The bottom of the cylinder is beveled which compresses the piston ring as it is inserted into the cylinder. Yes, the needle bearing is still attached to the connecting rod. I'm glad we were able to help you save your saw and save a few bucks! -Mark

Just did this and the cylinder on the poulan pro 42 cc. The video was a life saver as me working on small engines is normally a death sentence for the engine. Aside from a few extra steps for the cylinder- all was the same except the throttle cable is non-trivial on the pro model...and I ended up unseating it at the trigger when trying to re-attach the cable to the carb. Might be better to take the trigger apart when taking it apart since it's pretty simple to reattach it at the trigger vs at the carb. Also on mine- I'm suspicious of the oiler actually getting oil to the chain. I got the spring on in the right direction (watched closely on that part) oil is coming out from somewhere in there but when I run it wide open, the chain should be flicking oil, but it's not.

The cylinder head inserts fell out when you disassembled it. You put them back in but you didn't show that in the video.. There's a left and right which I guess are different.

Donny I have had a couple of Poulan chain saws. Both leaked/leak bar oil out of the case to the point that they will empty if stored in upright position. But that is not my concern for today, A year ago, while working by a stream I got it wet, used it throughout the day but never ran great after that. It has since gotten harder and harder to pull start it. I took the exhaust off but still cannot pull it over fast enough to start. Takes 2 hands to even pull it all the way out. Pulled the spark plug and turns over with 2 fingers. Coated the piston from the exhaust side and from the spark plug side with WD 40 and later a heavier oil, but still cannot pull it over at all. Read some of your posts about gas oil mix but I have gone thru many tanks of gas when I could get it started. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Good video Mark, can you tell me what causes a lot of blue smoke and gas to come out your exhaust, Thanks.
@FIXTechGuides
@FIXTechGuides 6 лет назад
Hi Winston, there are a couple of causes for blue smoke emitting from your exhaust. One could be to much oil in your gas/oil mixture if it is a 2 stroke engine. The other cause would be because of worn piston rings, letting oil into the combustion chamber.

Just had to do this job on my 2017 Poulan pr5020 ... piston ring got stuck in the Piston Groove due to carbon buildup... happened during storage... about two months ... when it went into storage it was purring like a kitten ... 2 months later I needed it to cut a limb ... wouldn't start ... only making 25 lb of compression ... piston ring somehow got stuck in its Groove and was no longer riding on the cylinder walls to make compression ... took it apart ... put a new ring in it... cleaned out the Piston slot for the ring ... got in touch with Husqvarna by email ..Expert Tech Department ... torque specifications on my saw for the four bolts that hold the engine crankcase and plastic saw frame together... 7 1/2 to 8 and 1/2 foot pounds.... then heat cycle the engine and recheck... and that's just what I did and she's running again ..😉

There are things you left out about gaskets, seals and the such. If you are going to tear down a saw this far, especially a Poulan, you might as well rebuild it all. There are many prior steps to be considered. Needed more info about cylinder scaring.

If the cylinder wall has been damaged, can you hone it with good results?
@FIXTechGuides
@FIXTechGuides 6 лет назад
Hi James, from what i have heard, if the cylinder is not terribly damaged, I have heard you can hone it .010 but after that you will need oversized rings.
@paolachang8787
@paolachang8787 5 лет назад
Es correcto Si la corrección excede los .10 deberás utilizar ring's sobremedida y si es mayor también deberás cambiar a pistón super medida

all nicely explained but! why do you dry fit everything? these machines need oil to work, when sliding in any piston rod, or piston in the cilinder lubricate it!!! with 2stroke oil. you are scratching everything up even before use. and yes it may smoke a tad more on the initial run but at least you know its all lubricated more then enough to prevent scratching.

This looks like a interesting weekend project for those who are mechanically inclined. The payoff is prohibitive otherwise. This is way too much work and money invested on a junk, cheap box store chainsaw that was designed with a 50 hour service life. Better to cut your losses and go get a quality machine like a STIHL that actually is worth rebuilding. At least you will have something when you are done. You can polish a turd all day, in the end it's still just a shiny turd! John
