EPISODE 114
In this Christmas special, we have to move 7 tons (14,000lbs) of lead from the old workshop to the new one. The 5-ton original keel is far too heavy to move in one piece, so I have to cut it into smaller pieces - with a chainsaw?!
We also get a tour of ROEDDA, a beautiful 1931 wood fishing tender, and we meet her new owner and captain Alex.

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ru-vid.comUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

I really like this concept where you introduce us to the people on the yard; clients and occupants. I think it improves the quality of your videos. I look forward to meet more of those people. And of course the specialist workshops and craftsmen needed to complete this enormous task of rebuilding Tally Ho. 👍

Seriously, look up the recovery prices of "low alpha lead". This could easily finance the entire cost of the recast keel. 10x or more in recovery value of old lead that does not have modern radiation in it. This is a good idea, Leo. You don't need the low radioactive lead for authenticity.
@Urd_Voiddaughter
@Urd_Voiddaughter 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing during the attempted recast. Lead that old is usually low radiation and can be quite valuable. Selling it and using new lead does add to the Ship of Theseus problem but it might very well be a good decision.

Saw a lot of comments in the chat about lead dust, a properly sharpened chain saw chain doesnt make any dust, It peels out solid chips. If a chain saw is making dust, you need to get your chain sharpened or replaced.

@@darthtrump4428 On a very very miniscule level your comment may be true. At a level, even with lead, that would matter, There is no issue from dust. If a chainsaw starts making noticeable dust your chain is dull and you need to sharpen it.

The lead-pouring disaster was my introduction to this channel. I'm a hobby machinist and subscribe to a lot of machinist channels. Apparently the Great RU-vid Algorithm (praised be its name) thought that the lead-pouring video would be of interest to me and put it in my feed. I was totally hooked and went back to watch all the videos from the beginning. I eventually became a patron.

There is nothing quite like spending time in a serious working boatyard. Have a relative in MD who owns one of the few boatyards on the Chesapeake Bay catering to the watermen & also the few remaining skipjacks. We enjoy time there each year doing maintenance on our RV before heading out or returning from trips across the country. As still a boater at heart the company & traded barbs with the yard characters feels right at home.

If you take 5 - 20’ x 1” rebar rods and weld them into a five equidistant polygon formation to be the core of the lead pour you will find that they do not need preheating and that they will act as a heat sink which will cause the lead to harden in place with a horizontal (lengthwise) crystal strand structure giving the keel much greater balance and shape. If you are going to do it in shorter sections the same idea will work. Do not allow any of the rebar to remain exposed after the pour as it will eventually oxidize in place. While this will not effect the overall functionality of the keel it is cleaner and nicer to have an enclosed pour. Also, you can weld-attach to at least three of the rebar rods a ring (or rings) that are integrated into the core of the structure and (if galvanized) can act over the long run as hangers for the moving or removal of the lead. I would recommend creating the precise shape you want in the mold by lining it with Satanite and then chipping it off after the cast. You can get intensely accurate pours this way in much the same as lost wax casting in green sand or plaster.

You know the dude, every working boat yard that allows live-aboards has one. He's the guy that has lived on his boat in the yard forever (usually a derelict sailboat). He talks about fixing up his boat and eventually sailing off to far exotic places, offering-up unsolicited shipwright advice to anyone who will listen. Yeah, we've all run into that "Yard Guy."

Ballast keels are bolted all the way through, so it wouldn't matter at all if it had weaknesses in it. It doesn't require any strength, as it is well attached to the strongest part of the boat. The only difference that having it made in 2 or 3 pieces, or with significant splits or hollows, would be that it might allow water ingress as far as the bolts, and then you could possibly get corrosion or a bi-metallic reaction taking place. Personally, I think the decision to re-cast the ballast keel to have been a marginal one, with not an awful lot of benefit for the extra work. I suspect that ultimately it was driven mainly by the difficulty of transporting the original from Sequim to Port Townsend in one piece.

I've been watching since getting covid in summer 2020 when I discovered and binge-watched the series. Now I have covid again and it's encouraging to be able to watch a new episode in quarantine on Christmas Day. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone there at the yard

That was a very good decision to break up the keel, never seen crystallized lead before ! Probably wouldn't have stood up to any grounding or choppy seas. Merry Christmas and Happy (belated) Solstice to you.

As a caster of small lead objects, I've seen lead crystalize or become granular many times if the temperature of the mold and the molten lead get out of whack. (technical term, there)

@@David-hm9ic I'm glad they spotted it. That could have started the same kind of failure as the brittle hull on Titanic ?

I thought all metal was crystallized in form. the grain size can vary widely however
