From Montreux Jazz Festival 1993. Chaka Khan (voc) Mel Davis (b, md) Brannen Tempele (dr) Mark Stephens (kb) Kevin Chokan (g) Tony Morris (s) Lili haydn (violin)
Never tired of this video can’t even count how many times I’ve watched it through out the years, this arrangement of this song just pulls me in and with Ms. Chaka singing it,mannnnnnnn it just gets me!❤️🙏🏼😇🎶🎶🎶
Chaka's voice is simply a GOD Creation and thats all there is to it! She is a master in vocalizing and face it, most singers just can't do it on her level and I don't care who they are, Chaka is in a class all by herself!
She is a genius besides being a gift of nature to humanity. The choice of notes and the approach is what makes you an artist. You can have a gift but to have the intellect and sensitivity towards music is what makes you a true artist. I love her❤
Such an awesome woman who went out of her way to introduce herself to me at the Museum in Hyde park (Chicago) on election day 1997. I will never forget her awesome beauty and genuine kindness.
I've heard this Gershwin/Heyward/Gershwin classic many many times...by many artists...great, ....good ....and ...not so... Miles, Sinatra, Whitney, Celine, "Sassy", Sublime, Fantasia, Kathleen Battle, Janis, Billy Stewart, Billy "Lady Day" Holiday, the divine Maria Callas, Herbie Mann's immortal rendition, Ella,...... This is one of my favorites.
Mr. Bowman... I couldn't agree with your sentiment any more! Just as Gershwin was a master, so my brother, is Chaka. From the time, back in the day, as Road manager for Rufus and Chaka, I have been in love with this vocal master and strong woman, Chaka. Just glad you got your act togerter and am finally happy sing'n anything she wants.
Hello! Thanks so much for this post. We have been looking for this to archive. It's always so cool to review those live performances...wow, that was so long ago. We all look so young!!! Those were some great times. Thanks , Leone & Kevin Chokan
CHRIST! WHITNEY, MARIA, CHRISTINA...., WHEN THEY ATTEMPT HALF THIS VOLOCITY IN VOCALS YOU SEE VAINS UP AND DOWN THERE NECKS! LIKE TONI BRAXTON SAID AT AN INTERVIEW...: " DAMMIT CHAKA , SHE GROWLS LIKE A LION AND NOT A SINGLE VAIN IN HER NECK SHOWING, SO POWERFUL!"
TYPICAL!!! Dont get mad homie!!! LOVE IT dont hate it!!! The TRUTH I mean!!! I wont unravel my pedigree any longer to you... ONE LOVE!!! And another 40 Stars for my Girl CHAKA KHAN!!!

@mctalks Kevin Chokan and I (Leone) was so thankful that Yoshi has filmed and posted this... Kevin is now Diana Ross' musical director and he also plays guitar touring with Jeffrey Osborne. Some of the other artist he plays with are Shilts (Down to the Bone), Everret Harp, Donny Osmond, etc.. when he's not working on the road he's in his studio writing his own music! Tony, Kevin says give him a call...catch up!
@ashlynlaguerre nope not whitney Just the greatest vocalist you'll ever known...Chaka is labeled a queen of her standard of music...Whitney has no such title...CHAKA'S vocal abilities are in human! The Queen of Funk. ..P.E.R.I.O.D.
Violin Lili Haydn, playin' Summertime with Chaka....1980-81, Chaka used Starlite Limo service, and Mistah Jimmy, here, in the early 1980's.....to the Greek, with her back-up girls, with Rufus. Chaka once pinched my butt (she thought I was so cute), pickin' her up at LAX. A decade later, she's rippin' up a stage with my niece, Lili. What goes around comes around....those apples, they could be musical notes.......(*c*)........don't eat 'em.....
@GROOVEYGAL There was no one called Leone in the band, but KEVIN CHOKAN....it was you on guitar, and Mark Stephens on keys and Melvin Davis on bass and Brannen Temple on drums and me, Tony Morris on sax and keys on that Jazz tour in '93. What a blast that was!
Shes definitely a first alto...and she is singing BLUES since BLUES is the mother of ALL American styles of music...so-called JAZZ is actually sofisticated BLUES WITH THE MINOR 6 AND MINOR 2 AS MAIN STAPLES.Chicago style Blues is CHAKAS style...25 Stars for my girl CHAKA KHAN from Chicago,ILL...HOME of CHICAGO BLUES!!!! HOLLA!!! ONE LOVE!!
Obviously I am not a musician. Anybody who capitalises every other word and uses exclamation points only by the dozen can easily draw that conclusion from the two sentences I wrote. Blues has a set of characteristics. Some of these (reliance on pentatonic improvisation) jazz retains, some (the use of simple I-IV-V changes and the I7 as the tonic) it doesn't. And I have no idea what you mean by minor 2 and 6, those occur only in locrian and phrygian, both of which are far from "main staple"
A whole lotta people covered this tune...Billie Holiday, Janice Joplin and so many more...This is just...good...not great...Her band is good. Gibbons on Bass??? Her band is darn good. In fact, I changed my mind...this is a great version...not for her.NOt this session...js'n
judy Girl If it"s just good, why the hell are commenting? Go elsewhere and listen, people kill me with the bullshit. I have heard so many covers of this song and people have their own personal taste, but vocally, there is no one and I mean no one who tops this...so you can gtfoh ...wtbs!
