Video #705: Pastel chalks stick surprisingly well to polymer clay. In this video I provide lots of ideas to try out for yourself... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In this video are examples of different brands of Chalk Pastels (Not Oil Pastels), and examples of finished polymer clay pieces that have incorporated Chalk Pastels.
In these examples from previous PcT tutorials, the chalk pastels have been used on both raw clay and mixed into liquid polymer clay.
Chalk pastels come in many colors and quality standards, ranging from Student Grade to Artist Grade. The artist grade chalk pastels tend to have a higher pigment level than the student grade ones.
Chalk pastels stick very well to polymer clay and usually don't need to be sealed unless they will receive high wear, or you are worried about them getting dirty.
You can use any polymer clay safe finishes to seal your chalk pastels if you wish.

I would LOVE for you to do the FIMO liquid video sooner rather than later. I have several projects that I am going to do for Christmas and if what I have heard about the liquid FIMO is true I would spend the money to get it. It is so much more expensive than TLS. Thank you, I have learned so much from you. I really appreciate your valuable teaching and knowledge that you share with us.

Hi Nicole, there are so many wonderful things you can do with FIMO liquid. Basically your FIMO and TLS are the same except that the FIMO is more translucent after baking. Not only can you mix it with caulk pastels to color it but you can also use oil paints, eyeshadow, and powdered food coloring. I have even used different spices(cinnamon, clove, turmeric), instant coffee, and oil pastels. As long as you don't mix it with a water based color there are lots of different things you can use to color your FIMO or TLS. I have even mixed it with sand and baked it, which creates a wonderful effect. You can paint it on to a printed picture and put it in a cameo. After you color it you can even paint with it. In case you didn't know Kato Polyclay sells it own line of colored liquid clay, and Sculpey just came out with gold and silver colored TLS. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me. I've been doing this over 20 years so I'm full of information. Take care, Dee😊

Nice video. Thanks for the explanation between the two types . I’m gonna try my hand at clay succulents . I’m a succulent addict 🤣. I have over 200 plants . But I’ve gotten spider mites and Mealybugs. Plus rot and other issues . I want to make them so realistic that one can’t tell they’re clay . Seems that the oil pastels would make the perfect “ farina “ look . Like the waxy coating on real ones . I’ll try both types and see how it goes . Cheaper than acrylic paints and so many color choices . Your creations are gorgeous 😊

I've been using the liquid Flimo for about 6 months, and I love it. It drys really hard and nothing, (and I mean nothing can move it!). It drys clear and I've used it to coat, fill and to reinforce clay items with no issues whatsoever. You can also mix small amounts of pastel or clay into it and stir it to either a smooth fondant thickness, or leave it chunky. I used it on my Gingerbread House as snow, it looks really good. However, it's quite pricy, and you don't get a lot for your money, however, it goes far depending on what your making. I always turn to it when I'm working clay as it's never let me down.

@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 лет назад
Thanks Jayne! I actually don't know since I have not yet tested Derwent Inktense blocks with polymer clay. I would suspect they would be compatible, and it would make sense that they would be more intense than other chalks since they are highly pigmented, but it would be something that would need to be tested to be sure. If you have some I would say Go For It! If not, I would go buy 1 (if that is even possible) and see for your self. Let me know what you find out!

I couldn't find the artist's loft soft pastel size kit you have at the Surrey Micheals (yes I'm in the same city as you :)! ) ...and it wasn't cheap either, I only got a small box of 12 colors for $16 dollars, and anything bigger was more expensive, they only had a large box of skin tone portrait colors for around $26, so I'm guessing the rainbow colored one would be the same price if they had it in stock that day. I'll try to check out Langley next time!

Hello! great vid, thank you - may i ask if you ever add the colour after baking? as far as i know it's fine to do so? pastels seem to be so much finer & 'airbrushed' in finish that i'd like to try them on my miniatures, but i add so much detail in my sculpting, that painting soft clay will destroy it, so i need to do it last after baking, so i would need a nice thin, matte seal or glaze i think ? im so new to pastels haha, THE FEAR! :)

Great video. Thank you Cindy for all your information and all that you teach me and the many other clay artists out here. I have experimented a little and turned translucent and white clay into whatever colour, using shaved chalk pastels. By mixing it right inside. Depending on the intensity wanted of the colour, I also have tested out other ways to pigment polymer clay, mixed in and baked it with shaved oil pastels, oil paint and in some cases even acrylic paint worked. Oh yes, and pigment ink seemed okay too, but it takes too much to mix in and get a decent hue. I was surprised at all the results. Messy, but then that is the best part about being an artist. :o) I did a simple blog article about it at HeArtfullycreating.

Hi, You can use oil pastels as well as oil paints. You can also use left over eyeshadow, powdered food coloring, and different spices and instant coffee. As long as you don't use any colors that are waterbased. I've seen people use acrylic paints but when it bakes the water creates steam and can make bubbles in your baked clay, so it's best not to use it. You can add it glitter or sand to create some wonderful effects. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions I'd be more than happy to help. Take care, Dee😊

Hello 👋 thanks you for this tutorial. Can you tell me please : is this necessary to do it before Baking or it doesn’t matter ? Thanks you 😃

Chalk pastels stick better to raw clay than baked clay because the clay is stickier when raw. There are times when you may just want a very light dusting on baked clay (like putting blush on the cheeks of a doll), but in most cases, it's done on raw clay.

Do the chalk pastels get displaced if you brush on a protective finish. I had this happen with mica powder

Yeah the chalk particles can get displaced, if the powder is loose on the top and not embedded well into the surface. You can use a polymer clay safe spray to prevent that though. Here is my Amazon link to a product that plays nicely with polymer clay, if you're interested: amzn.to/2XZupVo
