Video #693: If you absolutely must seal your polymer clay, here are the products that I've tested and can recommend... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
Description
I get the question all the time... Do I have to seal polymer clay? And if so, with what?
The short answer is No.... Unless you need to.
When polymer clay is baked, it basically becomes plastic that doesn't need to be protected. So if you don't add anything to it, or you don't want a specific finish on it, you actually don't need to seal it at all.
But if you add something to the surface that could get scratched or rubbed off, you may need to protect it with a polymer clay safe finish.
In this video, I let you know which sealer product that I recommend.

I really truly do appreciate the tutorials and am grateful for the guidance. I would suggest that with a tad bit of planning and editing the length of these could be reduced by half. Thank youfor the guidance!!!

I have to say. I'm brand new to polymer clay. I had to buy an oven and a pasta machine I chose the ones you use. I ordered them can't wait till they get here. I made my first Cain today. I did a skinner blend from your tutorial. I am hooked already. I want to learn as much as possible. Thank you for taking the time to do these wonderful videos

Thanks so much for the wonderfully instructive videos. I am new to polymer clay and am learning so much! I picked some up so I could create buttons for my crochet and knitting. I am using PearlEx and wondered which of the products you mentioned in this video would make it waterproof so the PearlEx doesn't wash off. I believe you mentioned the clay itself doesn't need any sealing. I would instruct people to hand wash the items and not to soak them but I don't want the coating dissolving. Thanks in advance for your help and thanks again for all the tutorials.

You may be out of luck. Most spray-on coatings contain ingredients that react with the plasticizers in polymer clay and can leave them tacky *forever*. That said, scrubbing off the coating using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol might work. Good luck.

I’m 34, Married with 2 boys and a beginner and I just bought A Air drying set of 26 colours x2 as I want to make a Butterfly / Fairy garden but needs to be waterproof - I’m wanting in in memory for my son and daughter I lost. This is the description that was with my Clay I bought - but I have bought some clay tools just to help me out and iv bought some strong hold glue as I want it to stick to terracotta pots The type of Brand Of Clay I bought is “ Magiclay - Candy Colours (has black and white in the Kit also) Magiclay is a colourful lightweight, soft and elastic type modelling compound it air dries within hours resembling a paper-like texture. Keep Magiclay in the tubs provided to keep it airtight, as once left out it will dry fast. It will bond wet to dry, so you require no adhesives. No tools are required to mould it in to shape, as it can be pulled, stretched, rolled, shaped, cut, stamped and pressed to suit a wide variety of art projects. As I’m a MP soaper, candle and tart maker as well as other natural products I have Mica powder colours and liquid soap colours and candle candle blocks

Hi, I have seen on many tutorials that you should never use oil based polyurethane varnish on polymer clay as the clay breaks down and gets sticky. They say to use water based polyurethane varnish which I have used both in satin and gloss finish and have never had any problems. Opinions??

Hello Cindy. Long time fan here. LOVE all your videos I know this may be an older video but I see that you dont have any of the sculpey glazes in this video. would you not recommend them over all the ones you have listed here? I just recently made one of the dragons egg from Game of Thrones and wanted a matte glaze over it to seal in the gliders paste I used but now I'm paranoid it feels sticky. and just wondered was there a better matte gloss I could have used?

It's been 4 years since ive polymer clayed and i'm sort of out of the loop, but i do remember matte and satin varnishes being a no go for polymer clay. Would you say liquid polymer clay thinned and lightly sponged onto polymer clay and rebaked would be a good choice as a matte sealer? If so i'm thinking liquid translucent sculpey if it's matte looking enough, and if not do they have any varnishes on the market that came out since then that wont do anything weird to polymer clay? I'm looking for a brushed on option rather than spray. I've been looking around and keep coming across old articles that I've already read from years ago. I'm making charms and it would be a shame for me to cover the whole thing in gloss if i don't have to because some areas would do better for matts and satins. I know i don't absolutely have to protect them all the time but i hate seeing the work get oily and dirty from skin oils or scratched from occasional handling.

I read somewhere that if you use the Golden Varnish (specifically Matte) that you have to rebake the piece after it's applied or else it will can be scratched off. Is this true?

Polymer clay is just plastic when it is baked, so it is waterproof. Usually, finishes are more of a problem than the clay is.

@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
I can relate... strong smells give me a headache as well, though not to the level of migraines, thankfully! Most of the Acrylic varnishes have very low odor. Anything oil based will have a stronger smell, so I would avoid those. The Ultradome UV resin has does have a slight smell, but it is faint in comparison to other UV Resins which can have extremely strong smells. Kato Liquid Polyclay smells stronger than the other liquid clays. Renaissance wax has a faint smell, that doesn't bother me. Glazing medium has almost no smell. Hope that helps!

Have you ever used Mod Podge Dimensional Magic on a piece and later varnished it? I use Minwax Polyurethane for most pieces, but some need more dimension. I've read that the Mod Podge turns cloudy if wet, which I know is true when I wet sanded a piece I messed up.

Though that sounds like a creative approach, I'm not sure if that would be your best option. If it were me, I would use UVResin instead to get your dimension. If you need polymer clay to be water repellent, you don't need to add any finish. Polymer clay is plastic and naturally water repellent. As far as varnishes for paintings or any finish for that matter, it is always best to test!

I can't seem to find the 'faux dichroic glass' tutorial on your website. Is it not available anymore? The link in this video's info box doesn't work either..

Hi can we bake polymer clays in any silicone molds?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
You can bake polymer clay in some silicone molds, but not all. If the mold does not say it is heat safe, you would need to check with the company that makes it or take the chance of test baking an empty mold to see if it can handle going into the oven. Unfortunately there is no set rule that I know of to know exactly which molds work and which ones don't.

Hi there is this the same for air dried porcelain ?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
I don't work with Air Dried Porcelain, so you would need to test it to be sure, but it wouldn't surprise me that much if the results were similar to polymer clay.

What is the difference between Liquitex BASICS Varnish and the red label product you have in this video? BASICS has a black label and I found it at Hobby Lobby. I made a large batch of new beads that I wet-sanded with four different grits and allowed to dry completely. I dipped all the beads in the Liquitex BASICS Gloss Varnish and hung them to dry overnight. Now all my beads are tacky. Help!

+Dee Stillman Some varnishes are too thick to dip beads or charms on them. It is always better to brush thin layers of varnish until you get what you are looking for.

I use my polymer to custom make mugs. Do you know of a sealer i can use to it safe to drink from and also with protect it when it’s being washed?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
As long as you keep the clay only on the outside, away from the rim of the mug and your lips only touch ceramic/glass and not the polymer clay, it will be safe to drink from. Like I mentioned in this video, polymer clay is plastic and doesn't have to be sealed. It can handle being washed, no problem, if you have baked it properly.
@snavarro2316

PolymerClayTutor thank you! Some of them do touch the rim and are painted i need something to seal it so it’s drinkable and will protect the paint when being washed.

I see that you have uv resin on your table, can you use just regular epoxy Resin to seal polymer clay?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 года назад
Yes, resin plays very nicely with polymer clay... but you do need to test it, because resin doesn't play nicely with everything else you can put onto polymer clay ie. some paints, waxes, finishes, etc. So test on scrap first.

I need Gesso to stick to Polymer clay but it rubs off even after days of drying! I have tried to paint the clay with Acrylic Paints but they rub off it too! I'm wanting to paint a model that I'm hoping to keep for year's, is there anything that I could try. Thank you in advance, take care. 👍😷👍
@PolymerClayTutor

Acrylic and Gesso should be sticking, are you sure you're using oven baked polymer clay and not something else? If it is Polymer Clay then perhaps the surface needs a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol or acetone? That may help the paint stick better. Once you have the paint sticking well, you can pop it back into the oven for about 10 minutes to heat set it. That helps the acrylic paint and polymer bond better together. Hope that helps!

@@PolymerClayTutor Thank you so much for replying I really appreciate it. I've run out of Acetone but I do have Isopropanol Alcohol would that be OK to use? Yes it's definitely oven bake polymer clay. It's years since I used Polymer, but I had no problems then! I've learnt something new, heat setting acrylic paint. I've heard of heat setting paint but I obviously thought that it must be a special paint. I'll have a go at cleaning the parts with Isopropanol Alcohol, I have some pieces of polymer that's been baked but I didn't use so I'll test them with it first. Then follow your advice of heat setting the paint if the Isopropanol works. Thanks once again you're a STAR👍😷👍

@@PENFOLD1962 Thank you so much for saying that! It's really appreciated. 🙏 99% Isopropyl Alcohol works well for cleaning surfaces. Acetone actually eats into the clay a little and is much stronger. Try the alcohol first and if that isn't strong enough, try the acetone. I recently found a bottle of pure acetone in a pump bottle at DollarTree for $1.50 so it shouldn't be too hard to find if you need it. Use it in moderation though, it is a pretty harsh chemical. The Isopropyl Alcohol is much safer.

Hi does anyone know if colored pencil it graphite pencil on polymer clay once sealed will last/not rub off/not fade? Any help would be greatly appreciated 💛
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 3 года назад
Graphite should be fine on polymer clay and I can't see why it would fade or rub off if it were sealed, though it might smear a little when putting on a sealer. Since I haven't done that specifically though, I would try a test sample first to figure out the best method for sealing it.
