Challenging Approaches | Santos Dumont RNP 02R | Real Airline Pilot 

I enjoy flying in Brazil (and South America in general), so I will definitely check out SBFN. Sadly, I found this on Wikipedia: “Starting October 12, 2022, the operation of Jet engine aircraft at the airport was indefinitely but temporarily suspended by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil. Operations of Turboprop aircraft were not affected. The reason for the decision was the condition of the runway which is in need of repairs.” So for the time being I’m going to have to break some rules in order to fly in my GOL 737 😊

@@18vallancel Sad to hear that, didn't know. As it's a very isolated place (an island, of course), that can sometimes happen. But in the MSFS world, the runways look fantastic, so no problem in breaking some rules hahahaha. I've never been to that airport, only in X-Plane 11, but I did land on Santos Dumont, the same approach that Emmanuel did on this video. It's both beautiful and frightening, with all the terrain closing by, but surelly a lot of fun.

@@combatarmsjong Yeah this Santos Dumont approach around the Praia de Botafogo which Emmanuel just did is one of the few genuinely difficult approaches I’ve done (right up there with Paro). I think the big issue is the last-minute right turn where you can’t see the runway. This is a problem in the sim if you don’t have head tracking software.

I always connect the name of this island with the tragic crash of AF447 a few years back. It was very close to it 😢

haha, I tried two times, the record is the second. The first one went well as well (there was a great vid from real life showing the exact flight path from the flight deck), but I trusted the Autobrake and wanted to see what it could do. And it overshot the runway at about 30kt.

Yep, there you finally see what maximum breaking really means as a passenger! On a Boeing probably even more than on the Airbus as I guess they'll use MED and not max manual (since the Airbus has nothing like MAX AUTO on the 737).

Hi Bora, I use FlightControlReplay to play any of the external scenes (I fly everything from the cockpit as seen in the cockpit shots), then Streamlabs Desktop to record them.

The PAPIs are directly next to the aiming point. Might be hard to see on the recording however. I run a 4k 42" screen at home, but to keep the filesize of the videos decent I record downscaled to 1920x1080. It was quite hard to spot the PAPIs on my screen already, so might be that they are close to invisible on the vid.

@@A330Driver Thanks a lot Captain!. I was confused of not seeing the lights but now I will increase the video quality to the max to follow the PAPIs lights. Awaiting for your fantastic upcoming videos as usual :).

They all require RF leg functionality which at this moment doesn't exist in PMDGs 737. Thus it's not possible at the moment.

Samos surely is fun as well! I find Paro the most challenging though. In Samos you can at least see the runway you're approaching!

Hope so too! I believe they said at some point in the past that they wanted to do it, but I don't know what the current situation is on this topic.

Unable, I can not include anything of my airlines EFB in videos. However you can be rest assured I did extensive testing with the OPT during the beta phase and the PMDG is accurate. PMDG uses the original Boeing figures in their Addons so I would expect nothing but accuracy.

Hi Bob, I used Flight Control Replay for those replays and Streamlabs Desktop for the recordings. No need to spend money on any recording software in my opinion, there's a lot of great freeware available.

The FD doesn't give you any usable guidance during the visual part of the approach. Thus we recycle it.

@@A330Driver and because we could use it at a GoAround we don‘t switch it off?

When you press TOGA for go around the FD will automatically "pop up" even if the switch is off. Suitably called the pop up mode.
