From my understanding you probably shouldn't put a mag loop on top of a metal file cabinet. I bought a carbon fiber camera tripod to use my f loop portable so there wouldn't be metal near it. It might be interesting to try it again on a wooden table and see if it makes more contacts than on the metal cabinet.

What happened to the classic high power magnetic loops that needed a $500 Soviet vacuum variable capacitor across the top? No one remembers they exist, and ran high power?

You can homebrew them and I talk to someone almost every day who used a jennings vacuum variable cap, but they will generally use their regular dipole antenna. I wasn't that far invested into a magloop given I have an 80m OCF and 160m full wave loop, but did experiment with one for my SDR, even remote autotuned the thing. Was a fun little project. The one time I lit it up with 100W, I used coax for a capacitor and found the performance was rather poor (I was getting S9 reports when I normally get S9+10, so 10db down) compared to any of my other antennas. Magloops are for when you have literally no space and don't want to go portable.

This is ridiculous. Nobody is going to remember all of this if they should buy one of these disasters until they get one in the future.. A 5 year old must have designed this thing.
