It was Gene Tunney who studied other fighters and learned their weaknesses and came- up with strategies on how to beat them. Gene Tunney only lost one fight- to Harry Greb and he fought greb four more times after that, winning each time . That's in an era when there weren't referees and doctors stopping fights, if there was any chance that somebody might be getting hurt, Tunney in the modern day never would have figured out how to beat greb because the fight would have been stopped with him getting the beating he was getting in that first fight and it's very likely his own boxing career wouldn't have gone anywhere after that had he not regained his American light heavyweight title back from greb in the rematch.
Weirdly enough the first time I found your channel I thought that the most spectacular thing about you was your voice. So suitable for voicing a calm and confident person
@Tino Gisondi I feel like you don't understand just how fuckin' scary weapons are. Once they're involved, there is no Mr nice guy and Dr Evil, there's just you and a person capable of ending your life. In that situation, you sure as hell try to talk them down first, which is exactly what Ramsey tried to recommend a while back. If you show them intent to kill, then now suddenly you've put them in the same place and they are gonna be attacking you WITH A KNIFE like their life depended on it. That is really a last-ditch resort.
It parallels politicians and legislators who don't have backgrounds in anything around science, engineering or math making decisions that involve all those things like assuming if everybody had electric cars, it would be some "free lunch" they don't even know what a kilowatt is without googling it so they seem to feel that electricity, magically appears out of nowhere behind sheetrock where a receptacle's mounted and these incompetent but arrogant- buffoons make decisions affecting how millions of people have to live each day.
McDojo doesnt necessarily mean a bad gym in terms of teaching capability. McDojos are gyms that are predatory in getting money from you. Floyd Mayweather's gym is 100% a McDojo in that regard, yet some of the world's best coaches, physiotherapists etc work there.
Thanks dad. Now I can go nighty-night. I also won't forget, the fastest takedown in MMA is not a double leg or a suplex, but a well-timed, quick "Dynamite" shot to the chin. 😂
I would also like to hear your thoughts on the whole embarassing Artem, Khabib, Conor run-up to this fight. Especially, I'm curious how you feel about how religion was somehow made a factor by both parties.
Having trained in gyms around the world for years, I learned more from this classic, timeless book than I did from multiple trainers - across cultures and fighting styles. It is not only a crystal clear break down of critical punching fundamentals, but insight into the corruption of all fighting businesses, as still seen in MMA and strip malls across America, 70 years after its publication. Mr. Dempsey first warns about the terrible dangers of street fights, but not while crying about weapons?! Instead, he teaches the skill of quickly knocking someone out with either hand in self defense if a fight is inevitable. An old school, trained boxer can still do this quickly and efficiently today - at least as quickly as someone can brandish a weapon outside a bar on a sidewalk and long before you Kung Fu Panda types complete your mid-air Flying Omaplatas. Yes, "all fights do go to the ground" - especially when a shopping mall MMA guy is unconscious on the sidewalk from the techniques so beautifully explained in this book.
Also dude, have you considered making some cash on the side as an audio book reader? Though, if you do take my advice, remember to silence the phone next time ;-)
@Ramsey Dewey Great book :) Thanks for this one champ. Hypothetical. Conor McGregor has just come into your gym and says "You've seen my fight, what could I have done to stand a better chance at finishing that fight my way?" Isn't Ferguson an alien?! How about that roll! That cardio! Hype hype!
Two people who both weigh 160 lbs and are fairly athletic but with no fighting or other sports experience are about to fight a UFC fight. You have five minutes to teach them how to fight. What do you tell them?
What do you think about the conor vs khabib? Should mma let their fighters insult their oponent about their familiy, past, religion and everything on live tv? Is khabib still the champion? just your short opinion, i know it's too controversial for you to comment but i want your personal opinion since you seem to be the Adam West of mma
Coach Ramsey thank you !!! Listening to you talking is always great and I see you as a modern philosopher ! You have talked a lot about this book and I was looking for an Audiobook version, and there is a video of you reading it !! Thank you and great voice !!
The opening para about the baby makes me giggle every time :D I keep wondering if the baby represents my (untrained) fist, what would be the condition of the baby, and/or my fist, landing on the burly truck driver. The horror!
Good Book, good reading. What i love about your channel is your honesty. Sadly the sound volume spikes make it impossible for me to listen to this recording while in bed with eyes closed. This becomes especially apparent for S and T sounds. If you need help editing the audio let me know! Thank you for providing great content.
Hi! I really like your videos May I ask you to continue the series of Championship Fighting Explosive Punching & Aggressive Defense by Jack Dempsey I would be very grateful if you could and I believe there are others who enjoy it
Great stuff! I'm glad we're benefitting from your own training. You have the right rhythm and tone, I could listen to this all day. Keep up the good work!
Good stuff. My younger brother and my second SO taught me the importance of using bodyweight. The first cos he was fit as f@#k, but I'd overcome him through sheer weight, being the b@stard I was, and us having regular fights. The second, cos moving a heavy weight around ain't so easy, especially when it's angry (thank you Akido). Nowadays, I'm c.180lbs, and that's perfect if you ask me. Yeah, in my younger, fitter days I was c. 154 (5'10"), which is great for climbing mountains , but not so good one on one; as I learnt, working in a factory, where the big humungous women would have a lot of fun mucking me about, all in a good natured way of course.
Omg yayyyy! I've been trying to read this book. I went up to chapter 8 and practiced the falling step but then got caught up in life and stopped midway. I'm so glad I can now listen to your soothing voice *and* complete the book *and* get your point of view.. Thank you Ramsey!
Thanks so much for this, Ramsey! I’ve been wanting to check this book out since I started following your channel. You have a great audiobook voice, sir!
Thank you so much for reading this, I'm on disability due to a brain tumor and have long bouts of double vision preventing me from reading it myself, and a very strict budget on a fixed income.
Awesome! You've probably somewhat covered the question that I'd like to pose to you; How useful is wing chun as far as self defense is concerned and what is my chances of being a successful martial artist(I like Karate) at age 45 with a great deal of knowledge of concept but very little experience? Thank you
1792 The Art of Boxing by Daniel Mendoza is another excellent boxing book in addition to Jack Dempsey's Championship Fighting book...My two personal favorite boxing books.
ur prolly the right consult here. dempsey used to chew pine chips 2 increase jaw strength? bathed his face in beef brine 4 added toughness? seems some discrepancies exist when it comes to getting straight answers on these subjects online,ay. thanks.
Please do a video in depth about the straight jolt Dempsey talks about. I keep trying to do it but it just feels awkward and when I try it on the heavy bag it seems no more powerful than a stiff jab
These ASMR girls aint got a thing on you man. Your voice is relaxing ! I slept like a baby while listening. But thanks for the reading the book. I am implementing Jack Dempsey's tips gradually.
When in the name of Spock and Kirk are you actually going to finish this audio book mate!! It’s amazing but I need to heat the rest of it! It’s been years it seems! 🤷🏻♂️🤦♂️😂
Jack Dempsey is a great writer. And you, Coach, is a great reader with a great voice. I enjoyed watching this video. It is a classic. Jack Dempsey is a great boxer, martial artist and a legendary personality to have walked this earth. It seems his style of boxing was Peekaboo. Mike Tyson was a Peekaboo boxer. Also, Julio Chavez style of boxing looks a lot like Peekaboo.
That depends on what the target is and what kind of result you want. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NV2VC7IHCYk.htmlsi=4Ufv2iZ7HP8KPADj ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7kFVU6OozhI.htmlsi=gBm6JYXUJsy9BhmX
I literally just bought the book on Amazon because you mention it so much and it sounds fascinating, and then I found this video... Still, I will have a weathered book like yours someday.
Your channel is just a wealth of fighting knowledge and insight. I have watched many of your videos and they are well articulated and punctuated by your epic radio voice. Consider me subscribed good sir.
base vegeta as Jack Dempsey taught us, you must always remember: you’re bigger than a baby, and you don’t have t jump out of a window to generate power.
Is this your best video? Perhaps man perhaps. Lots of great videos on the channel, always with that smooth amazing voice! I got hooked on the channel because of the awesome pressure testing of fake self defense ‘techniques’. I think discussing old masters adds a completely new dimension to your channel. Most welcome! The channel has achieved a whole new level. Well done!
I read this book a long time ago, it's phenomenal. I love Dempsey's insight to old-school boxing vs the new school, particularly his comments regarding left lead jabs being used as a set up for point based outboxers. That's something I'm trying to work on, turning my left lead jab into a straight.
hey man i just saw a video of bjj guys competing while high on weed. so i was wondering what my favorite mental coach would say about that issue? i heard u speak about steroids and these kind of enhancements and i agree with u it should be allowed - would make for much cooler action and crazy moves. so what about the weed? xd cheers
I do find that many instructors take the fundamentals for granted. Fx I train wing chun. I feel like I should have trained boxing first, then some BBJ and then I could start to use wing chun principles because I still don't know how to move in a fight. We focus so much on technicalities before we even know how to move. Dont' get me wrong I find wing chun very fun and that's probably why I do it but I still want some practicality as well.
Jack dempsey? Isnt he the one who use to chew on pine wood to strengthen his jaw? I also believe, he is the fighter who had the rule added, that a fighter has to go to the corner, if he knocks the other fighter down. Earlier boxing, if you were knocked down, i could rush you and still hit you (something jack was good at) but, when jack was getting beat up like that, he wouldnt fight the guy again, unless the corner rule was in effect. I cant remember who the fighters name, he kept losing to though but it was a big named guy.
The standing 8 count rule was instigated at the behest of Jack Dempsey prior to his first fight with his good friend Gene Tunney. Prior to that rule, the standing boxer did not have to retreat to a neutral corner, and would stand over his downed opponent waiting for him to stand up. As soon as his feet were on the floor, the standing fighter was allowed to strike again. Jack mailed a lot of people like that. Out of respect to his friend, he requested the standing 8 count rule (which is a well intentioned, but misguided attempt to make boxing safer, in my opinion- since it allows a potentially concussed fighter to recover and get concussed again) In their fight, Dempsey knocked down Tunney, and the referee took about half a minute to count to 8. Its famously known as “the long count”. Tunney ended up winning the fight, and many Dempsey fans blamed “the long count”. They rematched, and Tunney won the second fight as well. Both men remained good friends throughout their lives.
This is one of the most thoughtful and helpful things I've ever seen a RU-vid creator do for their audience. You have done me a personal favor by doing this, and I thank you my friend.
Seriously, like yesterday I watched your video and you recommend the book and explain it. And today you're like, "If you don't have time to read this, I'll read it to you." What a nice guy.
Who would win in your opinion: Michael Jai White: black belt in Taekwondo, Kobudo, Gojo Ryu, Tang Soo Do, Wushu and Kyokushin 6’1” 198 lbs Or Scott Adkins: Red Belt in Tae Kwon Do, trained in Judo, Wushu and Jujistsu and trained kickboxer 5’10” 176 lbs
Thanks for this Ramsey, I have just bought the book. But due to my heavy work load I do not have time to read. Many thanks, I hope this is the start of many more historical combat books. The Toughest Man Who Ever Lived about Mitsuyo Maeda would be amazing! Just realised this was 5 years ago???? How have I only just found this LOL
31:25 I have my punching bag above a rough patch of dirt with some shallow potholes. I was just reading JKD at the time and read about this old heel-to-toe fencing step (Israel adesanya is a good example of it uses it a fair amount). And I thought to myself I could probably get away with my, boxing footwork, pendulum steps, my Muhammad Ali patterns, Etc that were already mentioned earlier in the Tao. Then I went to Lunge forward into my punch and since I was barefoot and I didn't lift my foot high enough, my right middle toe caught the rim of one of the shallow holes in the ground and my weight went down onto it. I thought I broke it because it turned black and it hurt for over a week or more. I was lucky it was just bruised, but I learnt the lesson and from then on when I stepped I primarily stepped Heel To Toe which would have prevented my toe catching the rim in the first place. You should use any good footwork pattern but especially on uneven ground I think everyone should learn this specific type. It is also rather easy to change directions at any moment during before and after the strike or movement with this specific type of footwork pattern. It's from ancient sword fighting footwork, so it's three-dimensional not like modern fencing which is linear.
Oh my goodness. I just found your channel yesterday (On one of the MMA Try Self Defense Moves), and I was thinking that I'd love it if you do audiobooks and was thinking of asking you to do just that on one of your more recent videos. You were steps ahead of me. Thank you Mr Ramsey.
Kinetic energy is one half mass times velocity squared. So Physics says a fast punch delivers more energy than a slow punch that is strong. Squared. I think this is what Jack Dempsey is driving at.
