Chandler (Bernina 950) "Industrial" Sewing Machine

This is the Chandler made by Bernina. I do not know Chandler's model number but this is for all practical purposes a Bernina 950. I cover the features of the machine and my general impression of it and I show you how to thread the machine and load a bobbin if you are in to that sort of thing. I'm also making a separate video of the machine's performance of all 21 of stitches on the stitch selector. Keep an eye out for it.

Whoa! Have never seen this one! Looks super sturdy and has that bigger arm like the Bernina.

I have one of these, and the best fix I had for mine when the 'old oil thing' became a problem, was setting it in a covered plastic tub full of paper towels on the bottom, and keeping the whole set up in a warm space for a few weeks to let all that chunky old oil melt. Then I re-oiled the machine and away I went. Everything works except for the bobbin winder now. It's my understanding (right or wrong) that the bobbin winders on these machines were particularly finicky, so I'm probably just going to buy an accessory bobbin winder & call it a day.

I have industrial machines. Love that they're workhorses, don't love they're all one-trick ponies. Might have to bring this one into my stable for its versatility. Thank you AGAIN for introducing us to a fantastic machine!

Everybody needs a good garment sewing machine in the fleet. I keep an old Singer 319 that I like for the occasion that I want to sew some decoration or zig zag.

@@AlexanderDyer I'll check out your Singer 319 videos, thank you! Would love to know your "Secret Spots" to find machines. Regulars like Juki DDL-5500 and such come up all the time, but kudos to you for somehow finding all the obscure machines!

I've done a couple of repairs on a friend's Bernina 940, I think it's the same as the 950 except it uses flat shank domestic needles. I did notice the needle plate screws, they look a little different. They look like they're center drilled (in the slot) as if they are meant to be oiled. I have the machine with me while the owner is in Germany so I was able to take a good look at the screws. I used a straight pin to probe the center holes and the holes do not go through so I do not know why they are made the way they are. They are a standard 4-0.7 mm thread, I used a set of thread gauges (thread detective) and the screw fit perfectly.

I'm glad I could introduce you to it. It is somewhat rare that a company would put a home machine on an industrial setup but I have seen it before with the Singer 201. Only top of the line machines get such a treatment because who would bother on anything less.

how high footlift? Feed dog release?

Probably about 7/16, pretty typical. It is a garment machine, you know shirts and dresses, stuff like that. the feed dog release is for manual embroidery. I'm gonna try and list this on my website next week.
